Remembering the 2018 Wells Fargo and the Tiger Woods Phase 1 irons

Published

on

As we prepare for the 2021 rendition of the Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow Golf Club in Charlotte, North Carolina, there is no better time than to look back at some of the modern history of the event, including when Tiger Woods set the equipment world ablaze by showing up with his very first set of TaylorMade irons the TW Phase 1 in 2018.

The TaylorMade TW Phase 1 irons went into Tiger’s bag after almost a year of using the much-discussed TGR Prototype, which were confirmed to have been made by Nike before they closed up shop (but were stamped sans Swoosh or other Nike badging).

We should note that the team at Artisan Golf including the famous man behind the grinding wheel Mike Taylor did help in the prototyping of the Phase 1 irons, which lead to the final creation: the TaylorMade P7TW.

The PH1 set was a collaboration between TaylorMade and Mike Taylor with a new cosmetic design we created. We didn’t want to change any significant performance attributes because the immediate goal was to get TW into a TM iron. We partnered with Mike Taylor to help with the creation of PH1 as well as the learning process required for the development of P7TW. For us, it was a learning experience as TW went through his testing protocol for a new set. Making sure everything was dialed in and felt right.

– Matt Bovee, Taylormade Golf

With all the equipment news, it was a big week and for Tiger. The new irons resulted in a T55 (+2) with the highlight being a 68 on Saturday. As for the winner, it was Jason Day at 12 under. The Australian notched a two-shot win over Aaron Wise and Nick Watney. It was J-Day’s last win to date.

Best forged game improvement irons? – GolfWRXers discuss

Published

on

In our forums, our members have been discussing forged game improvement irons. WRXer ‘Monks66’ is on the hunt with more forgiveness, saying

“I currently play the Mizzy JPX Pro 825s, love them, but I don’t play as much golf these days, wondering if there is a forged iron out there with more forgiveness….thoughts?”

And our members have been sharing their best picks in our forum.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • tigercolt77: “You’ll get a lot of answers, and it comes down to what look/feel you prefer. I’d go with Callaway Apex cf19 personally. They check all the boxes.”
  • blopar: “Srixon ZX5 or PXG 0211, I have a set of each. Right now, I’m lovin’ the PXG’s.”
  • R5Two: “I would recommend hitting the ZX7, it has more forgiveness than you would think. Also, forged face insert T200 are great this year. +1 for the PXG sale is fire.”
  • 20six: “Mizuno Comp-EZ, if they could be found.”
