Dustin Johnson to snub 2021 Olympics – GolfWRXers react

Published

on

In our forums, our members have been reacting to the news that Dustin Johnson won’t be competing at the 2021 Olympics. Johnson skipped the 2016 Olympics, and has now removed himself from 2021 Tokyo, saying

“It’s right in the middle of a big stretch of golf for me, so that was the reason I was kind of waffling on it a little bit. It’s a lot of traveling at a time where it’s important for me to feel like I’m focused playing on the PGA Tour.”

Johnson added that he would definitely have considered competing at the event had there been more time between tournaments.

Our members have been sharing their thoughts on DJ’s decision, with some mixed opinions floating about in our forums.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • Justsomeguy: “If he’s being honest with himself, he’ll regret it one day. Too unique of an opportunity. Everybody remembers Justin Rose won gold. He’s already rich and top of the class. I could see it being a harder decision if he was really just starting to make a name and needed to play x tourneys to keep his card.”
  • Bye: “I think he has made a smart decision. The end of the season is busy, especially if the Ryder Cup goes ahead. Flying to the UK for the Open, then on to the Olympics, back for the close of the season.”
  • miamistomp: “It is an honor to represent your country in the Olympics- that is universal Casual watchers don’t give a rat’s butt over Ryder or Prez cup. DJ ain’t hurting for money- Would not care if he never wins again.”
  • MattuO1984: “Good on DJ for coming out and saying that he is not going to play. I can’t see that a gold medal is going to make much of a difference in his career. A nice footnote or and also section but nothing more than that. It’s cool that golf is in the Olympics, but last time around, I paid little to no attention to it, and I suspect that it will be the same this time around.”

  1. Keep it amateur

The Olympics is no longer what it was intended to be, an amateur event showcasing people from around the world. It is now a 2 year rotating event showcasing professionals of professional sports. I haven’t tuned in except to watch Phelps in his last Olympic and am a crazy avid gold watcher and had no idea and no care that Justin rose won gold.

every pro athlete should not go to olympics. its past its prime. let it be an amateur event or for those without a major professionla league.

dj will do the pr thing and blame travel, etc, but the reality is no one cares about olympics in the game of golf

The Olympics have become a joke as has the entire concept of amateur athletics. With professional golf/hockey/baseball/basketball/tennis/soccer players all competing, The Games have devolved into nothing more than a chase after star power and TV ratings and the money it generates. Johnson is a professional whose job is to play golf for money and he shouldn’t be denounced simply for being honest about why he shows up for work.

Brooks Koepka gets engaged to Jena Sims; Signs of Masters hope?

Published

on

Brooks Koepka is now engaged to Jena Sims after the couple announced the news on their social media sites on Thursday.

The two began dating in 2017, and Sims, who has been prominent at tournaments involving Brooks since then, revealed the engagement news with the caption: “Forever is no joke.”

Doubt remains over Koepka’s involvement at next week’s Masters, but there has been the odd sighting of optimism for Brooks’ legion of fans besides the seemingly free movement of the 4-time major champ in Sims’ photos posted yesterday.

The Masters website removed Tiger Woods from their player list for 2021, but Koepka remains in said list, and according to Rich Lerner at Golf Channel, the 30-year-old was taking full swings at Riviera CC this week.

Could a newly engaged Koepka still tee it up at Augusta?

Ian Poulter switches to long putter and claw grip…but all is not as it seems

Published

on

Ian Poulter was in his element on Thursday, with the Englishman using Instagram to pull off a slick April Fools Joke.

The 45-year-old posted a video of himself practising with a belly putter and a claw grip in preparation for next week’s Masters tournament with the caption:

“I’ve been testing this for a while and it’s simply more consistent. Putting is key at the Masters. So if you can’t beat them join them…”

While some posters fell for the prank, the pros were quick to see through Poulter’s scheming:

  • Bryson DeChambeau: “Uh oh, is this one of those April… you know….”
  • Tyrrell Hatton: “Just need a greens book now.”
  • Justin Thomas: “Better get it in fast before it’s banned!”

It wouldn’t have been a true April Fools Day without a little something from the Postman!
