How many strokes have you shaved using game improvement irons? – GolfWRXers discuss
In our forums, our members have been discussing their progress since opting for game improvement irons. WRXer ‘Texcellence86’ asks members:
“Asking players who switched from players irons to game improvement irons, how many strokes have you shaved? How much did your handicap improve?”
And our members have been sharing their experiences in our forum.
Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- itsjustagame: “My choice in irons has way less impact on my scores than my choice of driver and putter.”
- dlygrisse: “I played some my best golf with blades, but over time my game and ball striking deteriorated as I got married and played less. I started playing I3 OSize in 2000 when they hit the market, I became more consistent. My good rounds probably weren’t much better but my bad rounds became better.”
- Socrates: “I have no data to say that I’ve gotten better with GI clubs, but I can say that from age 45 to 60 I have maintained my iron play and even gotten my hcp down a few strokes. Just for fun I occasionally haul out some clubs that are non-GI (aka blades), and I don’t miss them a bit. To quote Lee Child, ‘Never Go Back.'”
- larryd3: “been playing the T200s for a year and cut my index by at least 5 points. I’ve also played a lot more, taken some lessons and been really successful with my short game and putting. Just got fit for a set of Callaway Apex 21s, so hoping they are even better. Did the irons do it, not sure but certainly didn’t hurt. I was playing ap2s and a couple of others previously.”

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping
Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.
That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.
On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”
On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”
“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.
