Adam Scott testing Korean AutoFlex shaft at 2021 Farmers Insurance Open

It’s the season for equipment changes and testing, and at this week’s Farmers Insurance Open Adam Scott has been spotted on the range using an AutoFlex shaft.

AutoFlex is a Korean company offering shafts aimed at “challenging the conventional wisdom of golf”. The AutoFlex shafts are ultralight, super flexible, and are priced at approximately $800.

Per the company, Scott has been testing both the brand’s SF505x and SF505xx shafts since the Masters in November. The SF505x weighs 54 grams, and the SF505xx weighs 58 grams.

An extract of that article shows the impressive results Chang achieved with the AutoFlex shaft:

“At the time of this article, I have played some 10 rounds with the new AutoFlex shaft on my Cobra F9 driver (10.5°, 45.25 inches at D2) and I couldn’t be happier with my results. My driving accuracy has significantly improved over the conventional shaft (HZRDUS Smoke 6S).

I’ve played in both fair and very windy conditions, and the results were the same. I was finding a lot more fairway than ever before. That pesky little draw at the end that rolls the ball into the left rough has all but disappeared.

With AutoFlex, once I dialed into the new reality with an adjusted belief about whippier shafts, I was able to maintain both accuracy and distance for the whole round and not feel as tired. And I was better able to maintain my balance with a smoother swing and not have to worry about losing distance. Perhaps this is what let me hit the face center more often. Just like the namesake, it was as if the shaft was automatically trying to help fix my swing flaws to provide maximum forgiveness.”

    I don’t know how to look this up — but is this shaft on the USGA/R&A list of conforming products?? I gotta think it is, cause why else would someone even test it if it wasn’t.. But if the hype is real, wouldn’t this be a good way for the USGA to get in front of what ever new technology this is?

      why wouldnt it be conforming? its just a very soft flex shaft with new materials. the only rules for shafts is they are straight, round, and bend the same in all directions

        Don’t get me wrong — I have no problem with it.. But the USGA doesn’t always make rules that seem to agree with logic (i.e. long putter ban — looking at you Bernhard !) and there seems to be a ton of time/energy with the length debate.. And there must be something more than just a soft flex here, cause I gotta think other companies would have come up with softer flex shafts for high speed players long ago if that was the case..

          Something more? A shaft conspiracy perhaps? What are you even talking about? What is there to “get ahead of?”. If it wasn’t conforming Adam wouldn’t waste his time testing it. Pretty sure that I haven’t heard of a non-confirming shaft, tho I guess it could be too long or asymmetrical. I also would guess one could be too wide but Wilson could prob fill us in on that one. If it was “magical” then EVERY player out there would have one in & call it a day. The USGA should be investigating Fujikura, cause the Ventus is being used by waaaaay too many players. Must be illegal if so many professionals are trusting it. If it created 20 mph of clubhead speed gains I could understand your question but I guess in the end I just don’t understand what you’re questioning at all. Maybe the shaft was developed by Q?!?!
