Michelle Wie Bows Out of John Deere
Michelle Wie has withdrawn from the 2007 John Deere Classic, in light of recent events, this seems to be the best decision she’s made in quite some time.
Michelle Wie has formally announced that she will withdraw from the sponsor’s exemption she accepted into the PGA Tour’s John Deere Classic. After a shaky performance at the McDonald’s LPGA Championship in which Wie was unable to break par, it was no surprise that regaining strength in her ailing wrist was the main consideration in her decision, "While my rehabilitation is on schedule, I do not have all of my strength back yet. The TPC Deere Run course is obviously very long, and I just don’t have the length to play there right now."
In May this year, David Leadbetter, Wie’s swing coach, said she would begin focusing her efforts on the LPGA Tour and take a break from playing in men’s events. Yet, just two weeks later, she accepted her third sponsor’s exemption to this year’s John Deere Classic which her wrist injury has now forced her to relinquish. At last year’s John Deere Classic, Wie shot an opening 77 before she had to be taken off the course in an ambulance midway through her second round suffering from heat exhaustion.
The past year has been a roller coaster for Wie. Beginning with the trouble at the 2006 John Deere, Wie also accepted a sponsor’s exemption to the 84 Lumber Classic where she finished last in the field. Wie hurt her wrist early in 2007 after falling while running and bracing herself. After taking a full five months off to heal Wie’s comeback was less than warm at the Ginn Tribute Hosted by Annika. After approaching a score of 88 with two holes to play and withdrawing under suspicous circumstances and without an apology to the sponsors or tournament host, Wie left the tournament early and was seen practcing at Bulle Rock, the site of the next competiton. One defiant press conference later, and the ordeal was seemingly behind her until she failed to break par in any round at the McDonald’s LPGA, finishing at +21.
While Michelle herself has recieved strong critcism, her parents and management team have faced accusations ranging from allowing her to face the media under prepared all the way to putting too much pressure on her and demanding special treatment. Although the bulk of Michelle’s story has yet to be written, her withdrawl from the Deere appears to be one of the best moves she’s made in quite some time.
