WOTW: Dustin Johnson’s Hublot Big Bang Mystery Watch

Published

on

Dustin Johnson put on a display this weekend, winning the Northern Trust in a dominating fashion. He torched the course, as well as many of the other golfers, finishing 30 under par for the tournament! After completing that dominating performance he held the silver trophy up high with his usual Hublot Big Bang mystery watch on! Mystery watch? Yes, even Hublot themselves don’t know what he is wearing!

This is the one watch that has stumped me since the Presidents Cup last year. DJ has worn this piece a few times and it might be a total “Tour Issue” model just for him. I have looked at countless images of DJ wearing this watch and cannot find an image of it anywhere online.

Dustin has been a Hublot ambassador since 2017, so I figured I would reach out to them to see what this mystery model is. Well, they don’t even know. Hublot hasn’t told me they don’t know, but every time I inquire about it I am told it is either a Big Bang Black Magic or a Big Bang Ceramic Blue. Neither is correct as DJ’s reference has silver sub-dials and what looks to be a carbon fiber dial with a blue tint to it. Now I have asked about those details and Hublot has stated that it is simply the way the light is reflecting off the watch. I have now reached out to DJ’s manager and management team to see if they can maybe crack the code!

Big Bang Black Magic – DJ’s Wrist – Big Bang Blue Ceramic

Hublot is a maker of luxury watches that was founded in 1976 by Carlo Crocco. The name Hublot itself means “porthole” in French and you can see that influence in the design of their watches. The Big Bang model was released in 2005 and was given to a Hublot gold watch with a rubber strap. That combination had not been done before and was a “beginning” for Hublot.

Today the Big Bang line makes up about 55% of Hublot’s sales. DJ’s watch is surely a Big Bang model as you can see the round bezel held in place by 6 H-shaped titanium screws. The Alligator and rubber strap is held in place with matching, signature H-shaped screws. Both the Big Bang Black Magic and the Ceramic Blue have a 44mm case made from black ceramic. Ceramic cases are lightweight and extremely scratch-resistant. Hublot made their ceramic more durable thanks to a base of zirconium that is sintered at high temperatures. The case is then micro-blasted for a satin finish and softer feel. That classic Big Bang bezel is made from matching ceramic and the case is accented in either black or navy parts depending on the model. Both the Black Magic and Ceramic Blue are chronographs with 2 sub-dials, but neither has them done in silver.

There is a limited edition Big Bang that pays tribute to the Chelsea soccer team that has silver dials but that model has a brighter blue dial and a silver case. The dial on the Black Magic is made from woven carbon fiber while the Blue Ceramic is done in navy blue with a sunray finish that reflects more light. Both models have a date window at 4:30 that is white numbers on a black background. DJ’s Big Bang has the date window in the same spot, but the color scheme is reversed. Sapphire crystal, with anti-reflective coating, covers the dial and is also very scratch resistant. The back of both cases is Black Ceramic and contains a display back for viewing the HUB4100 movement. Six traditional screws hold the back in place and help seal the watch, giving it a 100-meter water resistance rating.

The HUB4100 is a self-winding automatic movement that is based on the ETA 7753 movement. Most Hublot loyalists would prefer the in house UNICO movement, but the HUB4100 is reliable and accurate. The HUB4100 contains 25 jewels and 42 hours of power reserve. The rubber and alligator skin strap is attached with 2 titanium H-screws on each side and comes together with a stainless steel deployment buckle clasp. The strap on DJ’s is a black Alligator with blue rubber, the opposite of the Big Bang Blue Ceramic, but straps are very easy to change.

WOTW Special Edition: Masters champion Dustin Johnson’s partnership with Hublot Watches

Published

on

This past Sunday, Dustin Johnson won the Masters in historic fashion, setting the tournament scoring record with an impressive 20 under par final tally. As is the tradition at the Masters, Dustin received his green jacket from the previous year’s winner, Tiger Woods, and on DJ’s wrist was his usual timepiece, a Hublot Big Bang Chronograph “Beverly Hills.”

Dustin and Hublot formed their partnership back in 2017, but it wasn’t as simple as just shaking hands, signing a check, and putting DJ’s face in some ads. While doing research to find information on Dustin’s very rare Hublot watch—one of only 25 pieces in the world—I was fortunate enough to get in contact with his long-time manager, David Winkle. Being a fellow fan of watches, David was kind enough to put me in touch with a contact at Hublot who identified the limited edition piece on Dustin’s wrist.

David also kindly offered to give me some details and peek behind the curtain of how the partnership between Dustin and Hublot came to be. As a fan of both golf and watches, you can imagine that it took me less than a second to say “Yes!”

But before we get to that, here are the specs of DJ’s favorite piece.

David Winkle, CEO of Hambric Sports and Dustin’s manager, has had the fortune of watching DJ grow up in golf, following him since he was a promising college player. From early on, he knew that Dustin was going to be a superstar on the PGA Tour, not only because he had incredible talent on the golf course, but because of the way he was always true to himself.

Early on, Dustin showed that he was a little different than other golfers around him, having fantastic taste and a more advanced understanding of fashion and style at such a young age. But watch partnerships are very coveted and actually harder to put in place than one might think. Partnerships between companies have to be the right fit, and that doesn’t mean just the monetary amounts—style and being part of the athletes expression of themselves are major factors. Equally, brands are looking for partners that they can try new advertising ideas with and who are open to being a part of their culture.

The “holy grail” of partnerships is one where you have a great, established brand that the athlete loves and the brand really loves the athlete. Dustin and Hublot found that perfect match, and from what David told me, Dustin has even become friends with Hublot CEO Ricardo Guadalupe.

Talks with Hublot started in 2014 as Dustin was a fan of their brand and loved the unique style that Hublot was offering in its watches. Nothing materialized from the initial discussion—and that frequently happens in these deals. Timing is such a big part of a watch partnership, and for the next two years, it just wasn’t right and no deal was signed. David told me that the issues in timing usually consist of brand initiatives, finances, and athlete status in their sport.

Fast forward to 2016, and Dustin starts off the year playing very well and wins his first major championship, the U.S. Open at Oakmont. At the same time a good friend of David’s started working as a consultant for Hublot, so the two started talking again about a partnership. Dustin finally signed a deal with Hublot in 2017 to become an ambassador for the brand. Dustin loved that he got along so well with the executives and was open to being a part of the company’s advertising plan—when Hublot introduced the Big Bang UNICO Golf watch in Shanghai, Dustin was a huge part of the product launch.

Dustin and Hublot have found that perfect, “holy grail” partnership that so many athletes hope to land. It has to help to have a match-maker like David Winkle, who has been in the sports management world for 34 years, helping guide Dustin to these opportunities.

Now, how about that Hublot Spirit of Big Bang King Pave that he was wearing at the pre-Masters interview!

WOTW: Ally McDonald’s Rolex Datejust 36 “White Roman”

Published

on

Ally McDonald turned 28 on Sunday and celebrated with her first win at the LPGA Tour’s Drive On Championship. She shot -3 on Sunday to win by one shot over Danielle Kang. Like all golf tournaments, she received a trophy for her win, but she also received what looked like a Rolex Datejust 36 in stainless steel and rose gold!

WOTW Specs

Watch: Rolex Datejust 36
Reference: 126231-0015
Year: 2018
Limited: No
Case: 904L Oysterseel
Bezel: Everose Gold, Fluted
Dial: White with Roman Numerals
Size: 36mm
Movement: Caliber 3235, 31 Jewels
Power Reserve: 70 Hours
Glass: Saphire Crystal
Water Resistance: 100 Meters
Bracelet: Jubilee Oystersteel and Everose Gold
Price: $12,000

The Rolex Datejust has been one of the most popular Rolex models since it was introduced in 1945. That Datejust release was to celebrate the brand’s 40th anniversary and was only available in 18ct gold. Ally’s Datejust is also made from gold, but it is Rolex’s own Everose gold alloy that joins the 904L Oystersteel.

The Datejust is made in 41, 36, and 31 millimeter sizes to fit any size wrist. The images look like McDonald received the 36mm option that has a case made from Oystersteel, Rolex’s own stainless steel. The case features a screw-down caseback and a Twinlock sealed waterproof crown. The fluted bezel is another legendary Rolex design, and it is crafted from 18ct Everose gold. The fluted bezel was initially designed to help screw the bezel down to the case but now serves as a distinct feature on the Datejust. Inside the bezel is a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal with a cyclops lens over the date at three o’clock.

The dial is classic while but the hour markers are Roman numerals, beautifully crafted from Everose gold. The dial is mostly hand-finished and all done in-house at Rolex’s factory, so they have complete control over the quality. The hour, minute, and sweeping second hands are all made from matching Everose gold and polished for a long-lasting shine. Inside the Datejust is Rolex’s 3235 self-winding, automatic movement that offers an impressive 70 hours of power reserve. The 3235 also includes their Paramagnetic blue Parachrom hairspring for better efficiency and Paraflex shock absorbers for added durability.

The bracelet on McDonald’s Datejust is Rolex’s Jubilee style, done in Oystersteel and Everose gold. The Jubilee bracelet was also launched with the Datejust back in 1945. The 5 piece links are designed to be extremely adaptable and comfortable while on the wrist. The 36mm Datejust features Rolex’s folding Oysterclasp and contains an Easylink extension link to adjust the band 5mm for added comfort.

Congratulations to Ally for her first win on tour, that has to be the best birthday gift anyone could ask for. If you can’t win a golf tournament as a birthday gift, then a Rolex Datejust 36 in steel and rose gold would still be a wonderful second option!

WOTW: Phil Mickelson’s Rolex Yacht-Master 40 in Rose Gold

Published

on

Phil Mickelson is two-for-two on the PGA Tour Champions, winning his second start at the Dominion Energy Charity Classic last weekend. Phil shot a stellar final round 65 to win by 3 strokes over fellow lefty, and former Master champion, Mike Weir. On his wrist throughout the tournament looks to be his new favorite watch, the Rolex Yacht-Master 40 in rose gold and featuring a Rolex’s rubber strap.

WOTW Specs:
Rolex Yacht-Master 40
Reference: m126655-0002
Year: 2019 – Present
Limited: No
Case: Everose Gold
Bezel: Black Cerachrom Ceramic
Dial: Matte Black
Size: 40mm
Movement: Rolex 3235, 31 Jewels
Power Reserve: 70 Hours
Glass: Sapphire Crystal
Water Resistance: 100 Meters
Bracelet: Oysterflex Rubber Bracelet
Price: $27,300

The Rolex Yacht-Master started life as a prototype in the ’60s but never was released to the public. It had to wait 30 years to finally show its luxurious style to buyers. Where the Rolex Submariner is the ultimate tool watch, meant for professional divers, the Yacht-Master is its more stylish sibling. Yacht-Masters are typically made from precious metals like gold and platinum and feature a more detailed embossed bezel. Phil’s Yacht-Master 40 was released in 2019 and features an updated movement with a 70-hour power reserve and the addition of the adjustable GlideLock system in the clasp.

As the name of the watch implies, this Yacht-Master is 40mm wide and has a case made from 18ct Everose gold. Everose is Rolex’s own rose gold alloy that resists corrosion and keeps its color even when exposed to saltwater repeatedly. The screw-down case back and Triplock waterproof crown help give the Yacht-Master 40 a 100m water resistance rating. The Yacht-Master bezel is an iconic Rolex style that sets it apart from any other watch in the line. The bezel is bidirectional and made from Everose gold, containing a matte black Cerachrom ceramic insert. The dial is finished in a matching matte black and has hour markers crafted from Everose gold and filled with Rolex’s Chromalight luminescent material for easy reading in low light. That dial is covered with a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal that contains a magnifying cyclops lens over the date at 3 o’clock. Internally is an updated Rolex 3235 self-winding, automatic movement boasting 70 hours of power reserve. The 3235 is a certified chronometer containing 31 jewels and running at 28,800 VpH Holding the Yacht-Master on Phil’s wrist is a Rolex Oysterflex bracelet made from rubber. The Oysterflex contains titanium and nickel alloy “blades” that are encased in rubber for durability. There is also a cushioning system molded into the rubber for added comfort. The clasp is an Oysterlock with the new Glidelock system that lets you adjust the band length a total of 15mm in 2.5mm increments for the perfect fit.

Phil had been a long time Rolex Cellini wearer on the course and it is nice to see him make the move to a sports watch. The Everose Yacht-Master is perfect for hitting bombs and adds a style to Phil’s ensemble that only he can pull off. We haven’t seen the last of Phil, and his Yacht-Master 40, in the winner’s circle!
