Tiger Woods WITB: 2020 PGA Championship (putter switch)

Published

on

Update: 8/5

Thanks to Ben Everill at PGATour.com for passing along this from Steve Stricker in his press conference today, which would seem to confirm Woods is indeed benching his vaunted Newport 2. Further, Stricker suggest that adjustability and the longer length of the Timeless are motivating factors for the change.

STEVE STRICKER: Yeah, I asked him about the putter switch. It’s basically the same putter with a little bit more flexibility in the putter. He’s able to change the weights around a little bit, but the length is the difference. He’s got a little more length on there, and that’s just so he can practice a little bit more without back pain. That’s what excites him the most is that he was able to put in a lot of time with this putter, and watching him putt, it looked exactly the same to me. He rolled the ball great.”

Additional updates on Woods’ putter for the week in the “putter” section.

Putter 2: Scotty Cameron Newport 2 Timeless Prototype

This putter was a prototype for the 2020 Special Select line. It has tungsten weighs in the sole to hit the desired swing weight and feel.

Loft: 3.75 degrees
Length: 35.25″ (finished with grip)
Lie: 70 degrees
Head weight: TBD (presumably heavier than his 327-gram gamer)
Grip: Ping PP58 Blackout

We will update when play begins whether he sticks with the 14-major-winning want or the putter below. Woods practiced with a similar-looking putter ahead of the 2019 Open Championship.

Golf Channel has reported Woods will put the Timeless in the bag. We’ll see if that is the case when Wood tees off Thursday.

I made a pretty good putter. Then some grifter copied it.

The original cameron putter has nothing to worry about this time.
    .
Cameron probably paid him to tote along the prototype to generate hype in their special select line, which looks great imo. Finally, no face inserts! Now if one could only order them with custom alignment aids, instead of only the line on the flange…
