What GolfWRXers are saying about used iron sets for high handicappers
In our forums, our members have been discussing the best-used iron sets for high handicap players. WRXer ‘fortheloveofthegame’ has narrowed his choices down to the following which are all in the $300-$400 CAD range unless noted:
- Mizuno MP53 irons with S300 shafts
- Ping Rapture V2 irons
- Ping Eye 2 irons (black dot)
- Ping ISI BeNi (black dot) (would have to get new grips)
- Ping S55 irons
- Ping Zing 2 irons (black dot)
- Taylormade TP irons (made in Japan, endo forged) with Nippon NS Pro 950 GH stiff shafts (likely not for me but amazing price for these?)
- Callaway X-14 irons ($150 CAD)
- Callaway X-20 tour irons
And our members have been having their say on what they feel would be the best choice.

- cgasucks: “Out of the irons on that list, I’d personally choose the Ping Zing 2s. They are very forgiving, and Lee Westwood used them for years back in the day. But your money is better spent on lessons and practice.”
- Nessism: “Of the irons on your list the Rapture V2’s are a good choice. They are basically same as a Ping G series iron only with a Ti face insert. Can’t go wrong assuming the length, flex, and lie angle are appropriate for you.”
- tomg1969: “Rapture V2 without question. Second choice would be Ping Zing 2. Not the most attractive, but easy to hit and fun to play.”
- chipa: “I would look at component clubs matched with a shaft that best suits you. It will probably be cheaper than buying the used sets you posted. Golfworks has complete sets for $100 less shipping. You can also change out the long irons for hybrids, something that will definitely be cheaper than buy a set of used irons and then finding hybrid replacements for the irons you won’t use.”
