Testing clubs bad for your game? I would suggest that NOT testing clubs is bad for your game.

Part of the problem of the discussion: Ryan never clearly defines what he means by testing clubs. Testing out game-improvement irons from three different OEMs at a golf expo is one thing. Buying a set from the OEM rep after hitting 20 balls, and then selling it three months later, is another.

Testing clubs helps you separate hype from true performance improvements. Also, systematically trying out different clubs is different from trying to “buy a game,” as typlified by the guys who can’t hold onto a driver for more than 60 days.

If a person is a natural athlete and is between 5-10 and 6 feet tall, they may have found a club mix early on, given they fall into the physique of the “average” golfer for which most clubs are made.

For the rest of us, testing out clubs (and getting fitted?) helps us get the tools we need.

I fear Ryan kept jumping back and forth across the fence on whether it was “bad” or not.
