Forum Thread of the Day: “15 clubs or more. Would it help lower your score?”
Today’s Forum Thread of the Day comes from theothertwo, who has asked an intriguing question in our forums – if you were allowed to carry 15 clubs or more, would it help lower your score? Our members have got involved and created an interesting discussion with plenty of strong opinions arguing for both sides.
Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- puttingmatt: “Most golfers would lower their score if they only learned how to play with fewer clubs, not more.”
- agolf1: “It could help a very skilled golfer (that has time to practice all of the different shots with different clubs) when they are playing a course that happens to have a need for various things one time a round. Think Phil carrying around 20 clubs for every imaginable situation. For most, it won’t change much on average.”
- golfgirlrobin: “I could definitely use a 15th club, primarily because carrying a 64* wedge means that I have to make compromises at the top of the bag. Don’t know what I’d do with a 16th, but one more would be helpful.”
- jll62: “Depends on the player, but I believe I’d shoot marginally lower scores if I could carry more clubs. The change wouldn’t be dramatic, however. I already change clubs at both ends of the bag depending upon course setup prior to tournaments (e.g., UDI vs hybrid, etc.). If we could carry more than 14 clubs, I’d be able to carry both and would also change the gapping in my wedges to carry more.”

The vast majority of players would not benefit; the team can’t hit the clubs they have.
If I could add another club, it would either be another wedge or a second putter more fit to the one-handed side saddle stroke I use on short ones.

100 percent. Its the biggest debate I have…do I carry a 5 wood or hybrid with the 3 wood and long iron to have all tools to attack par 5s, or do I have 4 wedges to not have gaps inside 150 and have to make a bunch of 3/4 and partial swings. I have gone the 4 wedge route lately.

Yes. That’s why the rules are there for 14. Dumb question! Next!

I regularly just take my 5 iron down. No woods or hybrids. I generally shoot in single figures. My handicap is 13. You just have longer approaches that land on the green. I do play at quite a short course. It makes you far more skillful if you have to leave the driver at home.

I currently have 18 clubs in my bag, as I don’t play competitive golf and I also don’t give a shit about the rules as long as you count all your shots. More clubs don’t help at all, but it’s nice to have a second driver if the primary one isn’t cooperating.
