PGA of America CEO describes impact of Tiger Woods’ Masters win as akin to the moon landing
PGA of America CEO, Seth Waugh, has described Tiger Woods’ win at last month’s Masters as a “where were you when” moment on a par with the moon landing.
As well as discussing the iconic moment, speaking with Golf Channel, Waugh also described the impact it has had on the PGA Championship, with interest for tickets ramping up for the event, which is currently basking in its new May slot on the calendar, since Woods’ victory.
“Obviously Tiger has impact, sort of the moon landing. It’s not golf; it’s where were you when, kind of stuff. The impact immediately afterwards was extraordinary in terms of ticket sales.
We were basically sold out for the weekend, but the requests just poured in across the board in lots of ways. So we really expect to have an amazing championship at an amazing place.”
Beyond the PGA Championship, Waugh mentioned how he feels the knock-on effect of Woods’ victory could have a huge impact on the game of golf, similar to the effect the 15-time major champion’s victory at the 1997 Masters had on the sport.
“We absolutely now know that the fan base will be cranked up and we hope that it will have the same effect that he had his first go-around on participation. That’s really what we’re all about, and hopefully we can ride not only the wave and excitement about watching him play, but others wanting to play.”
The PGA Championship gets underway on May 16 at Bethpage Black Course.

18.3 million people watched the Masters 2019 final round.
600 million people watched the moon landing.
That’s 3% of the viewership.
The comparison would be “what’s The Masters?”

And get ready for a raft of dumb comments from PGA talking heads. At least they didn’t compare Tiger to MLK
