Commissioner Jay Monahan shuts down idea of the PGA Tour developing its own set of rules
On Wednesday PGA Tour chief, Jay Monahan, quashed suggestions that the sport could have two different sets of rules in the future, saying “the game is best served with everybody playing by the same rules and the same standards.”
There have been growing calls from some for the PGA Tour to create their own set of rules after multiple controversies to begin the year over the modernized regulations from the USGA and R&A. But speaking prior to this week’s Players Championship, Monahan shut down that idea, stating how the Tour has always played by the rules made by the two governing bodies and will continue to do so in the future.
“We have two fantastic professional governing bodies of the game. We have always played by their rules, and we will continue to play by their rules. And we are not going to be playing by our own rules.”
Following the Honda Classic, Monahan issued a memo to all Tour players regarding the rules of golf after several tour professional’s had criticized the modernized rules, with the new knee height drop regulation as well as the updated caddie alignment ruling causing particular backlash from the Tour’s players.
The feud between some Tour players and the governing bodies of the sport came to a head during the Honda Classic with the USGA’s PR Twitter account addressing Justin Thomas, saying “We need to talk,” before accusing the 25-year-old of canceling every meeting that they had planned together. A claim which the USGA later retracted, admitting that Thomas had, in fact, not canceled any meetings with the organization.
For Monahan, the current fractious relationship between the players and the governing bodies of the sport needs to be healed through a greater working relationship.
“I think what’s happened here the last few weeks has just exposed a weakness in our working relationship, which happens when you got a lot of different organizations. We’re going to tighten that up, and we’re going to move forward in a way that is going to be good for the game and certainly is going to get us to the right place over time with these new rules.”
