WRX Spotlight: Cobra King F9 Speedback driver

Published

on

Product: Cobra King F9 Speedback driver

Pitch: Every driver company boasts a couple of technological advances with its new driver launches; maybe a new crown to save weight, a different sole design, a way to shift CG to dial in trajectory, higher MOI, or a different face technology. This year, Cobra threw the kitchen sink at its new King F9 Speedback drivers, checking off all of those boxes.

Our take

A fast, aerodynamic clubhead with an extremely low CG, and perhaps the hottest overall package in the 2019 driver market.

As the company states

“The addition of a low, Speedback weight structure maintains a low, deep CG that has never before been combined with efficient aerodynamics. Without it, the raised aerodynamic features (skirt, tail/aft & crown) would raise the CG, negatively impacting spin and launch.”

Cobra and its engineering team claim that the F9 is the first driver ever to offer a raised skirt, raised tail/aft, a raised and rounded crown, and a rounded frontal perimeter that reduces drag for maximum club speed.

Director of Original Content Johnny Wunder on the F9

“It feels and sounds like no other. The numbers were solid across the face, and it looks amazing at address. It was the only driver I tried this season that got me to 111/168/2300. Truth be told, there are a ton of good drivers out there, but if I had to go out and play a round or tourney, the Cobra F9 is in the bag.”

“I cant argue with the numbers and how it performs in real life. They just nailed it this year. If I was going to nitpick at all, it would be for not making an all-black head.”

I tried the F9 Driver yesterday at our local Travel and Golf Show in Toronto and I was very impressed. The sound and solid feel was excellent. Placing the head behind the ball looks VERY square to the target line. I tried both the “bumble-bee” and satin-black and they both look great. Depending on your choice (9.0, 10.5) of loft, you get a different head. I’m not sure if any other manufacturer offers that option. Interesting. If you were to order directly from Cobra today, the “standard” shafts are all back-ordered. However, great driver and I’m looking forward to demo-testing it out at a local club.

I hit this in the PGA store, I don’t have much faith in their numbers but, it felt great. There may be a fitting in my near future.

This one is “Driver of the Year”.

It has kicked my trusty G400 out of the bag and given me ball speeds I haven’t seen for years.

New Level launches new 480-DB irons, blending performance and forgiveness

Published

on

New Level has been making some really good golf equipment since the company started up in 2018. Offering irons that are more geared towards the better player, precision has been a fundamental philosophy for New Level in creating irons and wedges.

The 480 line of irons has been the flagship of the brand, and the newest member of that team is the 480-DB iron that is now open to pre-orders. A new cavity design is what the whole 480 line is about, and the 480-DB takes advantage of that with added ball speed and a larger sweet spot.

For players who require their irons to offer the best feel, rest assured the DB is a fully forged (from 1020 carbon steel) one-piece golf club. No multi-piece, hollow design with this iron.

While the 480-DB is the next generation of the popular 902-OS, New Level didn’t follow the current trend in golf by chasing distance with the new iron. They actually weakened the lofts on the 480-DB with the spec sheet showing a 33-degree 7-iron and 45-degree pitching wedge. These lofts allow the DB to have less offset while still offering consistent distance off the face.

A traditional design was also at the forefront of the new irons to make sure that golfers with an eye for detail can look down at them with confidence that they will perform under any condition.

A weight low in the back cavity will allow their master club builders to dial in the perfect weight for the golfer, no matter the length or shaft being used. New Level believes that the new 480-DB is one of the most forgiving one-piece forged irons on the market today. A pre-worn leading edge on the sole should get through the turf quickly and with reduced digging for better turf interaction.

You can pre-order the New Level 480-DB right now on the New Level website.
