Hidden Gem of the Day: Harvest Hill Golf Course in Orchard Park, New York
These aren’t the traditional “top-100” golf courses in America, or the ultra-private golf clubs you can’t get onto. These are the hidden gems; they’re accessible to the public, they cost less than $50, but they’re unique, beautiful and fun to play in their own right. We’re treating this as a bucket list of golf courses to play across the country, and the world. If you have a personal favorite hidden gem, submit it here!
Giving my brother Gianni Magliocco a breather for a few days. From the wintry north, here’s the fifth and final installment of a 5-part Hidden Gem of the Day series from the Buffalo-Niagara region of western New York state. Installment #2 took a look at Diamond Hawk, built by the firm of Hurdzan-Fry in the mid 2000s. At the same time, the partnership designed and executed the Harvest Hill golf course, located southwest of Buffalo city, on the border between Orchard Park (home of the NFL Bills) and West Seneca. Harvest Hill is home to 5 par-5 holes, 5 par-3 holes, and only 8 of the two-shot variety. We like this unique take on golf. after all, 12 or more of the par-four flavor can get boring. At Harvest, the fives and the fours are anything but. If there’s a weakness at the course, it lies in the one-shot holes.
I coach high school golf in western New York, both girls and guys. I remember a lad making double-eagle 2 at the par-five 2nd hole (first photo below) five years ago. How massive is that? Harvest Hill offers chances at such legendary shots, but it will bite you if you risk more than you own. Let me say it again: the par five holes (2, 6, 10, 14 and 18) will live forever in your memory. They are that good, and they are the best set of long holes in New York state, no matter the course. Yup, even those US Open tracks in the toney Hamptons.
What’s the freight at Harvest Hill? Monday through Thursday, you won’t top $49. Weekends might go a bit higher, but if you mention my name, they’ll charge you double. Have at it, and you’r welcome.

This one really is a gem. I’ve had scores all over the map here, but its fair and completely depends on your ballstriking. Right on with the Par 5’s are great and the Par 3’s the weakness, though 17 is a great hole from any tee.
