Jason Day switches to TaylorMade P760 Irons in his quest to get back to 2015 form

Published

on

In his hunt for greater consistency with his approach play, Jason Day has switched up his irons ahead of the defense of his title at this week’s Farmers Insurance Open.

Day had used TaylorMade’s P-730 (4-PW), and P-790 (3 iron) on his way to multiple victories in 2018, but has decided to put TaylorMade’s P760 irons (with some custom adjustments) in play ahead of his second event of the year.

Speaking on the decision, the Australian cited his need to eliminate a nagging left miss which plagued him throughout 2018.

“My iron play is the one area that I’ve been working probably my hardest. Last year I struggled with the left shot, especially with the miss. It would constantly go left and I struggled with that a lot. So with the 760s, we moved the CG (center of gravity) a little bit further to the toe with some tungsten weight in the toe. Doing that hopefully will straighten that left shot out a little bit. I just have to keep working and hopefully with the hard work I can slowly gain confidence and it slowly brings results.”

Day finished 142nd in strokes gained approaching the green last season, and over his previous 24 rounds, Day sits a lowly 109th in this week’s field in the same statistic. While during the 2017/18 season, Day hit just 65-percent of greens in regulation.

The fact that Day was able to claim two titles on the PGA Tour in 2018, despite his poor iron play, is a testament to the man’s mental ability and incredible work on the greens. The Australian finished second last season for strokes gained putting, and led in the statistic for the majority of the year.

In 2015, Day ruled the golfing world, becoming World Number 1 while bagging five victories on the PGA Tour, including his single major championship win at the PGA Championship.

For Day to once again achieve that level of success, the solution for the current World Number 14 is simple – hit more greens.

“It’s imperative for me to be able to hit more greens. I think if I can drive it straighter but hit 70-percent of greens and rank No. 1 in putting, then I’ll probably have another year like in 2015, so that’s the goal.”

Jason Day goes in search of his third Farmers Insurance Open victory this week. The Australian tees off at 9.30am PT on Torrey Pines’ North Course.
