Forum Thread of the Day: “Best 3-wood of the newest releases?”

Published

on

Today’s Forum Thread of the Day comes from Kaexo, who asks fellow GolfWRX members for their opinion on what they feel is the best 3 wood of the recent releases. Described as the “hardest spot in the bag to settle on” by one of our members, an array of different 3 woods get a mention in Kaexo’s thread.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • Phil6380: “Cobra F8 is the best I’ve hit. Something about those rails when hitting it out of the turf. I have no fear of hitting down when needed. It’s also my most consistent club off the tee BY FAR! I give up a little distance, but when I need to hit a tight fairway, or I’m not hitting my best, that’s the club I’m grabbing.”
  • calfan36: “King LTD is great if you have some speed/launch. Very low spin, very forgiving, and an amazing feel. Also, I love that I can play it shorter and easily add weight via the space port.”
  • aussieb: “The two best fairways of recent releases are the G400 and Epic SZ for different reasons. G400 for forgiveness and great launch conditions from just about any lie, plus it sounds extremely solid.  Might still make my bag if I can find the right shaft combo, the Epic SZ is better for me than the Rogue for adjustability, ball speeds and head shape.  I found it worked off the short grass better than anything, and if I miss the fairway, it’s more likely to be the hybrid or a layup.”
  • ChipNRun: “Reality check: for many golfers, the best 3W is a 4W – slightly shorter shaft for better control, and extra loft to enhance launch.”

I just changed my titleist 910f 15.5 with Kai’li 80 that had been so money for the longest time, but I needed just a bit more distance. I picked up a Callaway rogue with the new LAGP Ozik, it’s working out great. Still bonding with the 3W, not as workable as the 910f just wants to go straight. It is absolutely the hardest club in the bag to get right….Good luck peeps

Three words guys “Tour Edge Exotics”. In the world of 3 woods they are constantly longer hitting clubs.

There is no “best” golf club…. unless you are a neurotic gearhead who believes he owns the best clubs…. until next year’s models are introduced…

Purchased a new F8+ 4/5FW, set the loft at 16.5* (same as my previous HL 3W), and proceeded to drive the ball approx 270 with it off the tee and sent a 2nd shot on a par 5 just over the green from 267. Landed (and bounced over a short 250 par 4 green) green yesterday. Every one of those shots was a flag/FW seeker. As smitten as could be with this club.

Like the last paragraph said, the best 3W is a 4W. I adjusted my Ping G 3W +1 degree for 17 degrees, changed the weight to a 4 gram heavier one and shortened the shaft for swing weight. Tolerably easy to hit off the fairway now.

The Callaway EPIC is the best fairway wood I have had. And it is still in the bag.

The best 3 Work is what you like. Everyone is different and swings different, so what is great for me may be no good for you.

The best 3 woods I’ve played (and I’ve played a LOT of them) have been the Ping Rapture (the all-Ti version) and the Callaway GBB 815 Alpha.

Best 3 wood is the SMX 3000 by a long shot….

There is NOTHING NEW about the latest released models…just Seller be Sellin!

      “NEW” is a marketing concept.

NEW is always improved and flashier WITB display of gearhead neuroticism.

Why Wesley Bryan is playing two 4-irons this week

Published

on

Editor’s note: This is an excerpt from a piece our Andrew Tursky originally wrote for PGATour.com’s Equipment Report. Head over there for the full article.

…Flash forward to THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson 2024 at TPC Craig Ranch in Texas, and Bryan is still playing with a mixed Takomo set, except he’s added a new 101 U 4-iron, plus a Titleist T200 4-iron, and he’s dropping his 5-iron.

That bears repeating: Bryan is switching to an iron setup that consists of two 4-irons and no 5-iron.

On paper, that looks wrong, but when you look at yardage gapping instead of the number on the sole of the iron, things start to make more sense.

As Bryan explained to GolfWRX.com on Tuesday in Texas, his Takomo 301 CB 6-iron goes about 195-200 yards. Then, his new hollow-bodied Takomo 101U Driving Iron, which he recently started testing “a couple weeks ago” and bent about 2 degrees weak, goes about 220 yards, and the Titleist T200 4-iron goes about 235 yards.

Speaking on his new Takomo 101U Driving Iron, which sells for $119, Bryan had this to say:

“It’s super forgiving and launches high, and it has a bit longer of a profile to where it looks really good,” said Bryan. “If people are willing to play something that doesn’t have an expensive price tag on their club…[I started testing it] in the last couple weeks and it’s in the bag.

“I just made it like 2 degrees weaker. Basically that gap from 205 to 225 I was in a little bit of a dead space, so I’m going to try and fill that gap better.”

Check out Wesley Bryan’s full WITB here.

Most forgiving players irons? – GolfWRXers discuss

Published

on

In our forums, our members have been discussing players irons. WRXer ‘NorthTXGolf’ is on the hunt for some new irons but is putting a priority on forgiveness, and has reached out to fellow members who have been sharing their thoughts and advice on the subject in our forum.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • Sam217: “i230 has got to be one of the most forgiving players irons available. Cobra King Tour another. Don’t sleep on the New Level 480 DB coming out soon.”
  • RangeBaller: “ZX5/ZX7 and i230 should definitely be in your testing pool.”
  • YAMS49: “Another I210 homie here… Very highly recommended if you want/need spin and a consistent yardage.”
  • golf-RN: “I second the Cobra King Tour irons. I am not the greatest ballstriker by any stretch of the imagination and I find the King Tours very forgiving. Toe strikes might lose 5 or 6 yards with no directional loss. You definitely feel the miss though lol but mishits from the center aren’t punished too hard regarding distance.”
