Forum Thread of the Day: “Charley Hoffman’s custom Scotty Cameron putter”
Today’s Forum Thread of the Day showcases Charley Hoffman’s custom Scotty Cameron Putter. The putter, which Hoffman used recently at the QBE shootout, has quite a nostalgic feel to it, although it appears the majority of our members are not too enamored with the new flatstick.
Check out the full thread and all of the photos here.
Here is what some of our members have been saying about Hoffman’s putter, but make sure to check out the entire thread and have your say at the link below.
- Meanmachinemoe: “Hoping this is a preview of his 2019 line-up so I won’t be tempted. UGLY!”
- evansmar004: “The top is not good looking….but I love walking the Scotty dog”
- cxx: “You guys are funny. The only beauty in a putter is how many putts find the bottom of the cup.”

Interesting clubs at top of bag – GolfWRXers discuss
In our forums, users are talking about top of bag setups that are non-traditional or thought-provoking in some way. Original poster @SuperSpurs106 inquired about other members who might use unorthodox set-ups to help with gapping issues or weak spots.
They wrote:
“I currently have a PING G430 driver, TM Qi35 3W and a TM Qi4D 7W. Driver and 7W are fine but can’t get on with my 3W and have always struggling with this club over the years. Thinking of adding a 2H which I know would look odd. Just wondering if anyone else had a weird set up at the top of their bag?”
Our members in the forum have offered up their thoughts and personal experiences with non-traditional top of bag set-ups, and their reasoning for thinking outside of the box to begin with. Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- BowMain42: “Don’t worry about what “looks” odd. If the club does what you need it to do, it’s the right club.”
- scooterhd2: “I cant hit 3 woods either. Thats why I roll with a unicorn XL Hibore 2 wood. 400 cc head at 16 degrees of loft and its just a monster 3 wood off the tee. Off the deck, we are playing the f6 baffler. 5 wood at 41.75 inches and its easy to control.”
- phizzy30: “I had driver, 3 metal, 2/4 hybrid once upon a time as a higher ss player. 4 hybrid is gone and in place is a driving iron nowadays. I don’t think what you’re proposing is weird in anyway, however the yardage gap might be glaringly huge between driver and 2 hybrid. What is it about your 3 metal that has got you all messed up? You could always go 4 metal with shorter shaft and see if that works.”

Members of the Mini Driver Club – GolfWRXers discuss
In our forums, one user has gone searching for fellow users of a mini driver. In a post, @TightFade asked for other mini driver users to chime in with their weapon of choice, the reason for employing a mini, and what club follows it in the bag.
@TightFade asked:
“What mini are you playing? What spot in the bag did it take over? What’s the next club after it? For me: Elyte mini 13.5. Replacing 3w. Next up club looks like it’ll be 5w.”
Our members in the forum have been sharing their own bag setups featuring the mini driver, and the various reasons they purchased one in the first place. Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- RCGA: “Ping G430 Max 12* ‘Thriver.’ Next club is a 4w and 2i (I play a weird course).”
- JMB3: “R7 at 12.75 with Diamana BB 63s. 3w replacement. Next Club: Elyte Ti 5w at 17*.”
- ColdOkieGolf: “R7 15.5 turned down to 13.5 It replaces the 3w. I found it surprisingly easy to hit off the deck, and it’s very rare that I need or want to hit something beyond 250 from the fairway, so next club is my 7w.”
- ChaosTheory: “I’m sub-90 MPH with driver. But I’m able to hit DOD. I have been wanting something like the R7 15.5, so I just ordered one. I have a spot in the bag so nothing has to go. But I could see it replacing my trusty 4 wood, which I never use for approach shots. Just tee shots and lay ups. If I drop the 4 wood, I will turn my 7 wood down to ~20 degrees and will have good gaps. I recently tried a thriver build: 12 degree driver turned to 14, with a heavier 44 inch shaft and added head weight. I hit it great. Very accurate and not overly high, but the problem was that it sometimes went as far as a typical drive. And that’s not what I needed. So I will probably turn the 15.5 up to 16.5 or even 17.5. It’s all theoretical at this point. ?”

Neurotic gearhead deadheads need status clubs in their WITB arsenal of weapons to cover up their impotence on the golf course. Many don’t even play their clubs for fear of scratching them… and when new models come on the market they go into a buying frenzy. Sick.. sad.. stupid… sooooo obvious

Besides the Futura, this guy is the biggest rip-off artist of all time. $89 Ping putters remade W/ sharper & cleaner edges and a $200 finish.
What a joke…knocking off one of the best selling putters of all time.
yeah, I’m officially a hater – NOW

When it came to market, someone on another forum dredged up an old design suggesting the Futura was also a copy. Don’t remember the particulars, unfortunately.

Be original! This is a Zebra knock-off, and so many putters (majority) are Ping Anser knock-offs. Just buy a Ping…why pay for the wannabe!

Younger geardeads don’t know about RAM Zebras or PING Anser. They just slobber over SC because many tour golfers are paid to play them. Bunch of lemmings….

Been waiting for a someone to remake the Zebra! Love it! I’d buy one in a heartbeat if available. One of the best designs ever, first adjustable putter.

I agree! I have about 10 old Zebras, but would love an updated version like this one.

That why he is known as “Donny Xerox” (Donald Scott Cameron) to some of the old timers. I have several of the original Zebras. Gene Littler is the first guy to win big with it before T. Watson.

Didn’t the RAM Zebra have black lines on top with a white sweet spot line…. while this Cameron copy has white lines with a GREEN center line??!!! Now that is a new and improved feature and worth every $$$$$$$$$ $$$$$$ for this incredible technological feat!!!!!

Regardless of whether SC did it himself, or more likely, Hoffman asked SC to do something along these lines, I love it. My old, original Zebra (shallower face) is still in great shape and, to be honest, was always a great performer on faster greens. The head was still light enough, yet face balanced, so that lightening-like downhillers were quite manageable. I ended up installing a thicker grip on it called a “Shark,” but then since I don’t really play greens 11-12 every day, gave it up for different, head-heavier models. I’d still maintain that for average PGA Tour greens, such a putter would be a very good choice for many touring pros.

All you have to do to make a Zebra heavier, is unscrew the sole plate, then undo the nut underneath and add a few washers. Then just tighten…

I never liked Scotty Cameron putters or Scotty himself, but I will say this that he is a marketing genius.. Anyone that can get upwards of $9000 for a putter or $1000 for a headcover is a genius and he loves all these nuts that buy all his products. Scotty probably laughs all the way to the bank.

I raced to the nearest Nevada Bob’s Golf & Tennis after Tom Watson ripped Augusta’s greens with that gray Zebra!! What’s putter that was! How does Snotty Cameron get away with this? Just a consummate thief!!

So sad. I am done with Scotty. In fact, I had been done with him for a while, he should not be allowed to make money copying others.

Copy Cameron. a complete con artist conjured up with the Titleist marketing machine. not bad though for a guy who used to work at Ray Cook in the customer service dept.

So the great copier is at it again and the lovers of copycat Putters are probably drooling to get one. I bought a couple of leftie Zebras for 10 Bucks each I would gladly sell for a couple of Hundred each.
