    Never had yips when I was younger (and pretty good low single digits). I choked from time to time and was never as good a tournament golfer as practice golfer, but never knew what a yip was. But I took 25 years off to raise a family, working overtime, not much spare change to play golf, and recently took the game up again when a teenage son got the golf bug. Now I know what the yips are.

    It doesn’t have so much to do with pressure on a shot, forced carries, tight lies, it’s just something completely involuntary and occasionally makes a run through my game, then goes away. Have gotten them with chips and recently, was playing perfectly well (at least for my game now), a few shots over par, without real fear over the shot, and suddenly, on a fairly easy par 3, chunked straight down into the ground so hard it hurt on three straight shots and yanked the ball well left and dead into the water (which wasn’t really even in play for even a mediocre shot). It was as if my shoulders and arms were operating completely independent of the rest of my body, as if someone was jerking strings and I was the marionette. I looked at the playing partners, said “I’ve had enough, give me an X”, then went onto the next hole and hit the ball perfectly well for the rest of the round. Strange phenomenon.
