John Daly’s replica Claret Jug just sold for $66K…or did it?
John Daly’s 12.5-inch replica of the Claret Jug from his 1995 British Open triumph was just sold at auction for $66,000.
Or was it?
Winners of The Open keep the Claret Jug for one year after victory, then return the trophy to the R&A with some ceremony before the next Open. They are eventually given a replica, which most not surprisingly keep.
According to Daly, whatever Platinum Night Sports Collectibles auctioned off wasn’t his trophy at all, and he has the photo (and hashtags) to prove it.
Don’t FALSE ADVERTISE…I said it 2016 & tweeting it again! You’re selling a replica 12 inch trophy…I will now and forever keep my 2 babies always! #fakeauction #replica https://t.co/GkPVExeOjt

Once again—I don’t sell my trophies! Tired of street Sellers & Auctions saying they’re selling the real deal! They’re selling a REPLICAAAAA look alike “MINI” Open Trophy! Sad, that these individuals monopolizing on athletes!#BuyersBeware #NotMyREALTrophy #1995 #Open pic.twitter.com/0owUPb3h2a

The auction house, not surprisingly, says,
“There is no ownership controversy today, and that this is indeed the one and only Daly Claret Jug available to the collecting public” (per Golfweek).
Interesting language and a bit of legal do-si-do, no? What say you GolfWRX members? Is there any reason not to believe Daly? Could he have had another replica produced and remember? Is there any reading of this situation other than fraud and a hoodwinked buyer?

We worked this pretty hard in the forums.
The champion is given a 90% scale replica to keep.
They may order (at their expense) UP TO four 66% scale replicas for other display/commemorative purposes.
Daly still has his 90% replica. The auction house is selling the ONE 66% scale replica that was made to commemorate Daly’s win.
The auction pushed the envelope a little bit in their description. There’s no evidence that Daly had anything to do with the small format one, other than request that the R&A make it (and pay for it). It is not correct to describe it as a “players format” trophy – that would be the 90% version. And it’s not clear that it will be the ONLY one available to the collecting public. I don’t see any reason that the R&A wouldn’t make 3 more copies for Daly if he requested them. IMO the auction description falls short of fraud, but it’s not entirely transparent.
