FTF: Why don’t you play a particular OEM?
The GolfWRX forums exist so golfers have access to the latest equipment releases, hottest discussions, real equipment reviews, best instruction, new technologies and everything golf you can imagine. So if you love golf, the GolfWRX forums are your sanctuary.
In the From the Forums weekly feature, we bring you the hottest, most buzz-worthy topics from our forums for your convenience. I’ll be your trusty tour guide to navigate the latest buzz. Here’s a peek behind the curtain into golf’s sanctuary.
Do you carry a lob wedge?
We’ve debated how many wedges merit inclusion among your 14 implements of destruction. This week, the question in more specific: Do you carry a lob wedge, or is something in the 56-degree range sufficient for your golfing needs? See what WRXers are saying and join the discussion.
Your best deal on apparel… ever!
Wanna gloat about your glorious apparel haul more smugly than the golf apparel-clad gent above? You’ve come to the right place. Although it’ll be tough to beat this find by Chilidog: “I got a Luke Donald used tour shirt with logos on it for the $9.99 opening bid because the guy couldn’t spell. He said it was a tuor used RXL shirt.”
Tuor! RXL! See the thread.
Why don’t you play a particular OEM?
On the heels of last week’s popular “Why do you play X manufacturer’s equipment” comes the inverse. Playa asks the opposite: “Why don’t you play a particular variety of equipment?” Beyond mere bashing particular OEMs, the thread is a look at what WRXers value and the subjective nature of equipment-related decisions. See the thread.
Pet peeves when watching golf on TV
Perhaps it’s because the “commentary-to-action” ratio is so much greater in golf than, say, basketball, that we’re keenly aware of the talking heads’ talking during golf telecasts. Commiserate with the forum faithful regarding the maddening, saddening elements of golf telecasts. See the thread.
One-liners from the senior set
Whether coming from the mouth of your grandpa proper or another gentleman in his golden years, it seems some of the best on-course humor comes from the oldest among, as brockgolf44 observes. He offers this bit his grandfather: “After I hit two in the water and proceeded to drop another ball. “Son, get in the cart…this is a smoke and drink hole.’” No shortage of these comedic gems from the AARP crew in this thread.

Most forgiving players irons? – GolfWRXers discuss
In our forums, our members have been discussing players irons. WRXer ‘NorthTXGolf’ is on the hunt for some new irons but is putting a priority on forgiveness, and has reached out to fellow members who have been sharing their thoughts and advice on the subject in our forum.
Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- Sam217: “i230 has got to be one of the most forgiving players irons available. Cobra King Tour another. Don’t sleep on the New Level 480 DB coming out soon.”
- RangeBaller: “ZX5/ZX7 and i230 should definitely be in your testing pool.”
- YAMS49: “Another I210 homie here… Very highly recommended if you want/need spin and a consistent yardage.”
- golf-RN: “I second the Cobra King Tour irons. I am not the greatest ballstriker by any stretch of the imagination and I find the King Tours very forgiving. Toe strikes might lose 5 or 6 yards with no directional loss. You definitely feel the miss though lol but mishits from the center aren’t punished too hard regarding distance.”

What’s the perfect mini-driver/shaft combo? – GolfWRXers discuss
In our forums, our members have been discussing Mini-Drivers and accompanying shafts. WRXer ‘JamesFisher1990’ is about to purchase a BRNR Mini and is torn on what shaft weight to use, and our members have been sharing their thoughts and set ups in our forum.
Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- PARETO: “New BRNR at 13.5. Took it over to TXG (Club Champ but TXG will always rule) in Calgary for a fit. Took the head down to 12, stuck in a Graphite Design AD at 3 wood length and 60g. Presto- numbers that rivaled my G430Max but with waaaaay tighter dispersion. Win.”
- driveandputtmachine: “Still playing a MIni 300. The head was only 208, so I ordered a heavier weight and play it at 3 wood length. I am playing a Ventus Red 70. I play 70 grams in my fairways. I use it mainly to hit draws off the tee. When I combine me, a driver, and trying to hit a draw it does not work out well most of the time. So the MIni is for that. As an aside, I have not hit the newest BRNR, but the previous model wasn’t great off the deck. The 300 Mini is very good off the deck.”
- JAM01: “Ok, just put the BRNR in the bag along side a QI10 max and a QI10 3 wood. A load of top end redundancy. But, I have several holes at my two home courses where the flight and accuracy of the mini driver helps immensely. Mine is stock Proforce 65 at 13.5, I could see a heavier shaft, but to normal flex, as a nice alternative.”

Why Ludvig Aberg is my new favorite player – GolfWRXers discuss
In our forums, our members have been discussing one of the new sensations in the world of golf – Ludvig Aberg. The 24-year-old finished solo second at the Masters a couple of weeks ago, and gained many plaudits, including from several WRXers.
- RELATED: ‘There were a number of red flags’ – Ludvig Aberg reveals why he turned down multiple LIV offers
One member, RoyalMustang, took to the forums to explain why Aberg is now their favorite player, saying:
“I loved the way the Ludvig was out there, having a great time, not taking himself or the situation too seriously. Even after the double at 11, he was like “well, that’s golf!” Loose and relaxed: that’s the way to play. It’s obvious he loves what he’s doing, he loves the big moments, and he loves being a part of it all.
Arnold Palmer was viewed that way. Just like Brooks Robinson was forever viewed as not just a great baseball player, but a great human being and friend to Baltimore.”
And our members have been reacting and sharing their positive takes on the young Swede.
Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- redfirebird08: “Ludvig has a great attitude, a great smile, and a great golf swing.”
- otto6457: “I’m very lucky to have talked with Ludde several times at the Rawls Course at Texas Tech. He’s a truly nice guy and very friendly. Always said hello when we passed each other in the club house and was always smiling. Watching him hit balls on the range was a joy. He has “that sound” and trajectory to die for. There were many times he was out on the range in 30+ mph winds just hitting the most beautiful shots that just seemed to ignore the wind. World class ball striker. And yes……..I am a fan boy.”
- konklifer: “I like him. In an era of endless waggles and laboring, his swing and pace of play are a joy to watch.

I can officially say I never hit a Nike club. I am happy about that.

I don’t play Callaway for 2 reasons. 1. There is a new “model” of basically the same clubs every 3 to 6 months which makes me just roll my eyes. 2. I went to test out a Callaway FT IQ back in the day at Golfsmith in the indoor range brand new off the rack. One hit and the hozzle seperated from the shaft and the head. I know it was probably just a one off freak thing, but it just put me off.

OEM marketing strategies: Pay pros to play their clubs and then sell their clubs to duffus recreational players at inflated prices to pay off the pros. It works every time, it’s a proven strategy to scam the duffers who are suckers for something new and shiny.

Feel free to start a thread on how bad OEMs are at putting on a putter grip correctly. Odyssey is by far the worst, but I love going to golf stores and playing with putters that are set like 20 degrees open because they cant line up a grip correctly with the top line.

Regarding clubs I avoid, Taylormade irons tops my list. I bought a set of their most recent irons couple of years back. Was having trouble, took them to loft/lie tech and found out that they were totally out of specs. Lofts and lies were off by 2 deg or more and no two clubs were the same. One was even longer. Their woods seem better, but I will never buy another Taylormade iron.
I stick with Ping, Callaway, and Titleist. I favor Ping and Titleist because they do not introduce new clubs every year and their quality holds up better.

I’ve never played Nike because I don’t like Tiger Woods.
