Rory McIlroy isn’t exactly loving the USGA’s fescue mow

Published

on

While reports indicate the USGA’s hasty efforts to dethatch portions of the the property weren’t a response to the Kevin Nas of the world, the optics of the mass mowing effort were much discussed.

Indeed, reporters broke the news to Rory McIlroy that a handful of holes were getting haircuts, and the man who once avoided such trimmings himself wasn’t exactly thrilled.

“We have 60 yards from left line to right line. You’ve got 156 of the best players in the world here, if we can’t hit it within that avenue, you might as well pack your bags and go home,” McIlroy said.

He continued: “I get that it’s thick and whatever, but it’s a hazard. If you put red lines just right along that people wouldn’t complain, it’s a hazard, and you’d go … It’s a U.S. Open, it’s supposed to be a tough test. And if guys can’t put it into play within a 50-yard zone I don’t think they’ve got much to complain about.”

Of course, as much as his words, his facial expression tells the story of McIlroy’s (an excellent driver of the golf ball) disappointment.

Don’t worry, Rory, it was all part of the master plan.

Per a statement from the USGA:

“Going into this week we knew that mowing certain parts of the fescue rough might be required should we have the combination of high winds and heavy rain. After 1.5 inches of rain fell overnight, we followed through with our plan to mow limited areas of fescue on holes 4, 12, 14 and 18.”

So, with winds and rain on the way, the USGA was merely executing something that was already in the playbook.

But Geoff Shackelford was right to note that:

“It’s strange and maybe a little embarrassing that the USGA didn’t notice pre-tournament that this really lush native grass just outside the roughs was total overkill, and even more bizarre that they had to have crews descend upon the crime scenes so aggressively.”

Regardless, Rory McIlroy is right with his remarks that if players can’t hit a 50-yard fairway they have no business competing in a U.S. Open. But his eye-rolling reaction to the news conveys something else: Players are tired of the added drama the U.S. Open brings.

As Rex Hoggard of Golf Channel indicated: “It’s not that players didn’t believe the official statement, but they’ve become conditioned to think the worse when it comes to the USGA.”

In short, patience is thin, and even in an (unofficial) effort to avoid drama, the USGA has created some…and play hasn’t even started yet.

Pros been bombing and gouging for so long that they don’t know how to play any other way.

For lots more photos, check out the full thread here.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • btyh: “Holy offset.”
  • Glf_LU: “These are interesting. Not going to make a rush to judgement until I see them in person. It does look like a little more offset than I would expect to see in this model.”
  • bcflyguy1: “Kisner is not one to make a lot of equipment changes (see the GBB driver he’s still using), so if these do have staying power in his bag that will be interesting to see. I have to wonder if there’s something different about his set, because like others have mentioned there appears to be more offset on his than I recall seeing in the samples I’ve had in hand.”

WATCH: PGA Tour players play hole blindfolded and it’s hilarious/amazing

Published

on

As part of a Srixon campaign, four PGA Tour players recently participated in a three-hole challenge, with each hole being a different game; hole No. 1 was blindfolded, hole No. 2 was costumes and distractions, and hole No. 3 was alternate shot with a baseball bat. The teams were Smylie Kaufman and Sam Ryder against Shane Lowry and Grayson Murray.

Watch the full video below, since it is quite entertaining (albeit not the type of golf that Old Tom Morris surely had in mind), but in particular, make sure to check out the first hole where Lowry and Ryder play a full hole completely blind folded. It’s amazing to watch how badly Ryder struggles, and how Lowry nearly makes par.

Cleveland-Srixon’s marketing department has been hard at work crafting these viral-esque ad campaigns; if you remember, former long-drive champion Jamie Sadlowski recently dressed as 80-year-old Grandpa Jamie to fool range-goers. That video has since gathered over 1.2 million views on YouTube.
