U.S. Open rough is so far in Kevin Na’s head that he’s calling for a new major championship

Published

on

I wish there was anything I loved in life as much as PGA Tour players love complaining about the U.S. Open venues being too difficult. I mean that so sincerely. And as a golf fan, I want to send a big shout out to Kevin Na for posting the video below. It’s things like this that really get my juices flowing for U.S. Open carnage.

Last week, Adam Scott set the tone for the 2017 U.S. Open by complaining about the set up at Erin Hills before he even saw the set up at Erin Hills. Now, we have this gem of a video from Kevin Na showing how thick the fescue is at Erin Hills.

First, Na cherry picks what I assume to be the thickest rough he could find on that given hole, then for dramatic effect takes hacks that could have easily sprained his wrist or dislocated his shoulder… all to prove a point that the U.S. Open fescue is thick. And yes, based on the video that rough is ridiculously thick; some would argue that you might not even want to hit in there and aim at the fairway instead. Then Na proceeds to rant about how players should get together to make their own major championship on courses with presumably rough that is less thick. Na, man… not gonna happen.

I must admit, watching thick grass frustrate a grown man so much is the high point of golf entertainment for me. It’s better than the back nine on Masters Sunday, or the Open Championship at St. Andrews when the wind is up. It’s just so hilarious and so shocking to hear the world’s greatest golfers get upset that a golf course is too challenging. It’d be like a boxer complaining to the league that Floyd Mayweather is too elusive, or Tom Brady saying it’s unfair how hard J.J. Watt tackles. In the mental battle between golfers and the U.S. Open venue, Erin Hills has its opponents down for the count and bell hasn’t even rung yet. Here’s to hoping all those U.S. Open participants survive — and I mean literally survive — the treacherous fescue at Erin Hills.

Side Notes: Seriously though, if you hit it in the fescue, just take the unplayable lie and hit a better tee shot next hole. Treat the fescue like the hazard it is. Videos like this just make golfers look so soft.

Personally I don’t care how tough a course is for the professionals, but I think a course design like that ruins the game for just about every normal player. Nothing makes golf worse than slow play, and when you have fescue like that it brings play to a crawl as people look endlessly for their lost ball.

Love the way the vid frames his face — looks like he is wearing a tree hat. Na was so psyched out that he shot -4 the first day.

Really! If you hit your drive 30° offline and can’t find it in the rough you should be penalized.

I can’t wait to watch 30-40 spectators tramping around in the hard rough trying to “feel” someones ball under thier feet.

Relief for an unplayable lie is 2 club lengths. In some cases a player might have to do that multiple times. One badly errant shot could take him out of the tournament. Combined with the probability of a lost ball, the penalty is too heavy.

I don’t know why everyone is giving Na a hard time… I think the video was supposed to be half lighthearted, not an outright rant against the USGA. Besides, Na just chose to vocalize what numerous amounts of players were already saying behind the scenes.

Why do you think the USGA frantically went and cut a ton of its grass?

So Na wants the players to invent their own major? Didn’t they do that with The Players Championship, with the intent for it to be the 5th major…in 1974? So, how’s that working out. The last I checked, there are still only 4 majors.
If you don’t like the way the tournament is set up then don’t play…give the spot to someone that will enjoy it and not have a hissy fit.

The fairways are the widest they’ve ever played on. 75 yards wide in most spots. The narrowest fairways are about 50, which is still really wide. And there are no trees to contend with. No need to have to hit it straight. You can just curl one and get it in play. You just have to hope the wind isn’t going to be severe. But Na is hilarious. And he plays on that. We thank you, Kevin, for bringing some fun to the Tour.

I think Na is trying to make a case as the writer puts it, fighting Mayweather with your gloves 3kg heavier than him, or receiving JJ Watts tackle with thinner paddings. He wanted to play in a golf course and not some fescue infested field.

This writer is a joke. Also, the comparisons are totally stupid.

“It’d be like a boxer complaining to the league that Floyd Mayweather is too elusive, or Tom Brady saying it’s unfair how hard J.J. Watt tackles.”

Really? I don’t think I heard Na complaining that DJ can hit the ball farther than he can, or that Spieth can putt better than he can… it had nothing to do with the skill level of the other people in the field, it had everything to do with the USGA being on the wrong side of the line of challenging/unfair.

The USGA is so concerned with having a “good tournament,” but their idea of what a good tournament is is so flawed. They think if the finishing score was around a couple under or a couple over, then they’ve had a “good tournament”.

This article is better suited for a forum post that’s quickly forgotten than a featured WRX article…

The worst part is, is that it will take Na 10 minutes to figure out whether he wants to take an unplayable or not. Most annoying golfer on tour. Hey Kevin you want to get together and plan your own major? Try winning one first.

I love watching the US Open, I’m with the author on this one.

Notice Na didn’t happen to mention that the fairways are 2-4x wider than normal U.S. Opens?

Turksy is killing it with these articles.

I can only assume we will soon lose him to what he, based on his writing style, considers the height of journalism: Buzzfeed. Probably in the quiz division. I cannot wait for Mr. Turksy’s personal touch on the quizes. Maybe choose what number Titleist I should be based on my favorite dessert. Or how my hybrid loft tells me which character from Friends I am. (SPOILER ALERT: I am totally a Monica.)

What GolfWRXers are saying about Kevin Kisner’s new Callaway X Forged CB irons

Published

In our forums, our members have been discussing Kevin Kisner’s new Callaway X Forged CB irons which he has in the bag at this week’s CJ Cup. WRXers have been commenting on the switch and the clubs themselves in our forums.

For lots more photos, check out the full thread here.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • btyh: “Holy offset.”
  • Glf_LU: “These are interesting. Not going to make a rush to judgement until I see them in person. It does look like a little more offset than I would expect to see in this model.”
  • bcflyguy1: “Kisner is not one to make a lot of equipment changes (see the GBB driver he’s still using), so if these do have staying power in his bag that will be interesting to see. I have to wonder if there’s something different about his set, because like others have mentioned there appears to be more offset on his than I recall seeing in the samples I’ve had in hand.”

WATCH: PGA Tour players play hole blindfolded and it’s hilarious/amazing

Published

on

As part of a Srixon campaign, four PGA Tour players recently participated in a three-hole challenge, with each hole being a different game; hole No. 1 was blindfolded, hole No. 2 was costumes and distractions, and hole No. 3 was alternate shot with a baseball bat. The teams were Smylie Kaufman and Sam Ryder against Shane Lowry and Grayson Murray.

Watch the full video below, since it is quite entertaining (albeit not the type of golf that Old Tom Morris surely had in mind), but in particular, make sure to check out the first hole where Lowry and Ryder play a full hole completely blind folded. It’s amazing to watch how badly Ryder struggles, and how Lowry nearly makes par.

Cleveland-Srixon’s marketing department has been hard at work crafting these viral-esque ad campaigns; if you remember, former long-drive champion Jamie Sadlowski recently dressed as 80-year-old Grandpa Jamie to fool range-goers. That video has since gathered over 1.2 million views on YouTube.
