Jaco Van Zyl is using a training aid as his actual putter!
Jaco Van Zyl is currently playing in the Joburg Open in South Africa using a putter that’s hardly wider than a golf ball itself. Actually, the “putter” — called a Cleveland Smart Square Stubby — is designed to be a training aid, not for use on the golf course in a real tournament with millions of dollars at stake.
Carl’s Golfland, a retailers that sells the training aid, says the club “is designed to help players of all ability levels develop a more consistent putter stroke. The smaller head design promotes more solid contact and gives you confidence on every putt.” Van Zyl has definitely developed some confidence using the Stubby, that’s for sure.
This is like a baseball player going to the plate with weighted donuts on his bat, or a basketball player playing in an NBA game while wearing ankle weights. It just doesn’t happen.

What GolfWRXers are saying about Kevin Kisner’s new Callaway X Forged CB irons
In our forums, our members have been discussing Kevin Kisner’s new Callaway X Forged CB irons which he has in the bag at this week’s CJ Cup. WRXers have been commenting on the switch and the clubs themselves in our forums.
For lots more photos, check out the full thread here.
Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- btyh: “Holy offset.”
- Glf_LU: “These are interesting. Not going to make a rush to judgement until I see them in person. It does look like a little more offset than I would expect to see in this model.”
- bcflyguy1: “Kisner is not one to make a lot of equipment changes (see the GBB driver he’s still using), so if these do have staying power in his bag that will be interesting to see. I have to wonder if there’s something different about his set, because like others have mentioned there appears to be more offset on his than I recall seeing in the samples I’ve had in hand.”

WATCH: PGA Tour players play hole blindfolded and it’s hilarious/amazing
As part of a Srixon campaign, four PGA Tour players recently participated in a three-hole challenge, with each hole being a different game; hole No. 1 was blindfolded, hole No. 2 was costumes and distractions, and hole No. 3 was alternate shot with a baseball bat. The teams were Smylie Kaufman and Sam Ryder against Shane Lowry and Grayson Murray.
Watch the full video below, since it is quite entertaining (albeit not the type of golf that Old Tom Morris surely had in mind), but in particular, make sure to check out the first hole where Lowry and Ryder play a full hole completely blind folded. It’s amazing to watch how badly Ryder struggles, and how Lowry nearly makes par.
What happens when 4 #PGATOUR pros take a day off?
Luckily, the cameras were rolling.

Cleveland-Srixon’s marketing department has been hard at work crafting these viral-esque ad campaigns; if you remember, former long-drive champion Jamie Sadlowski recently dressed as 80-year-old Grandpa Jamie to fool range-goers. That video has since gathered over 1.2 million views on YouTube.

I have a hole bag of training aids for my irons. They are called blades.

So if you can putt well with this putter in professional competition, does that mean that MOI is over-rated in putter head designs?

He should ask the USGA or wherever he’s playing if they can start using those 3 inch sure putt training cups also. I played in a scramble one time in Colorado and they used them. It was a blast. There were no pins, only a hole location sheet.

A scramble with no flags and 3-inch cups? Sounds like an enjoyable 6-hour round.

This putter/training aid has been around for a long time .I used to putt with one and if i remember correctly it is a square equally as deep as it is wide and therefore conforming. After a little practice it is very easy to putt with and I also used it in competition.

I actually putt with this thing at the store and had to send a text to my buddy saying, “WTF, the only putter I can make a putt with is a training aid!”

I’m surprised this is legal. What are the legal requirements of a putter head under the rules of golf? I once tried a putting training aid that was shaped a bit like a hammer head — a long body but with very small, square face to it that was smaller than a ball. I could hardly miss with that thing. I told the salesperson that I should take it out on the course because I putted better with it than I do with my actual putter, but he told me that it was illegal. The head had to be deeper toe to heal than it is face to back. I wonder if that is correct, though, considering some of the putter designs being used. Anybody know?

I think you answered your own question… “a long body but with very small, square face” juxtaposed with “The head had to be deeper toe to heal than it is face to back…

I think he understands what he said. I think his point is, if he was told a putter with those specs is illegal, the one in the story would be too.

That, and also the fact that some of the putter models out there like Jason Day’s Taylor Made Spider look to me like they would be deeper back to front than from toe to heel. But I have never actually seen one in person.

There are way too many putters which are deeper than wide for that to be true. Also the European PGA or RGA whatever would have banned it and told him no.
