Tour Mash: A record-setting performance from Justin Thomas

Published

on

If there’s only one ingredient, you can’t list it as a Tour Mash on the menu. No disrespect to last week’s SBS Tournament of Champions, but Tour Mash needed a bit more substance to serve up its 2017 debut. The PGA Tour’s Sony Open in Hawaii, the 2017 opening of the European and Web.com tours and a meet-and-greet of Champions Tour, LPGA and celebrities chimed the time to finesse a narrative for Tour Mash 2K17.

PGA Tour: A record-setting performance from Thomas

A Thursday checklist for Justin Thomas at Waialae might have looked a bit like this:

  1. Shoot 59.
  2. Set 36-, 54- and 72-hole records on PGA Tour.
  3. Move into the top 10 in Official World Golf Rankings.
  4. Never miss another U.S. team competition.

Thomas hasn’t guaranteed the 4th, but it’s pretty obvious that Thomas is The Guy right now on the PGA Tour. Back-to-back victories to open the new year, three wins so far in the 2016-17 season and the lead in the FedEx Cup race are hard to ignore.

On Sunday, Thomas got off to his first slow start of the week. He was 1-over par on the day through seven holes, but only Chez Reavie could be found in the hot column. Thomas’ large lead was never threatened, but he made certain to lock down a seven-stroke win with a 4-under back nine. Thomas fretted after last week that he had not yet established himself as a “closer.” His work on Sunday (6-under with no bogeys over his last 11 holes) moved him toward that designation.

In the race for second, Justin Rose shot 6-under on the day to reach 20-under for the week, edging Jordan Spieth, whose 7-under on Sunday secured third place. He finished one behind the Olympic gold medalist.

European Tour: Storm wins SA Open in playoff with McIlroy

A number of unlikely events transpired on Sunday in Ekurhuleni (say that three times fast… never mind, just try once). Jordan Smith, last year’s European Challenge Tour order of merit winner, got in the mix, out of the mix, and back in. A bogey on the 71st hole kept him out of the playoff by one.

Rory McIlroy showed that it’s not the arrow, but the archer, as his new gear took him to an 18-under finish and a spot in the playoff. As with Smith, a 17th-hole bogey in regulation was his undoing.

At day’s end, Graeme Storm was able to calm his nerves enough to birdie the 15th in regulation, then par the 18th hole on three consecutive occasions in extra time. McIlroy missed the target on the third time around, then missed an 8-foot par putt to lose out on the title chase.

By rights, Storm should not have been in the field. The Englishman lost his playing privileges last October, but moved up one spot in the rankings when Patrick Reed abandoned his Euro Tour card. Now, Storm can breathe a bit easier.

Web.com Tour: Thomas wins Bahamas Great Exuma Classic

They’re not the Thompson twins, but Kyle and Nick did battle all week long at the opening event on the 2017 Web.com Tour. In truth, the entire field battled the elements all week long. Given the winds, rains and cool climate, Great Exuma resembled a British Open site more than a chunk of paradise. On Day 1, the field averaged more than 80 strokes with three scores in the 90s.

Things began to stabilize a bit in the event that ran Sunday to Wednesday. Scores returned to the 70s with consistency and golfers regained their sanity. Sam Saunders began Round 1 at 7-over through seven holes. After making the cut, he tied the low round of the week in Round f4 to move up 21 spots. Dan McCarthy, the leading money winner on PGA Tour Canada in 2016, continued his great play in the new year, tying for the 4th spot.

Down the stretch, the eventual champion did his best to create a bit of drama. Thompson double-bogeyed the tournament’s 70th hole, just as Andrew Yun was finishing with back-to-back birdies. Yun moved to even par and a tie for 2nd with Nicholas Thompson, two behind the winner.

PGA Tour Champions: Austin and Mulder take titles

It’s the end of the silly season as we know it. Woody Austin and Mark Mulder feel fine.

Austin and Mulder won their respective divisions (Professional and Celebrity) at the Tranquilo Golf Club near Orlando. Playing a modified Stableford format, Austin posted a 59 on Friday to take a lead that he would hold the entire weekend. The Florida native claimed a 3-point win over Joe Durant.

As for Mulder, he began the final day in 2nd place behind Ray Allen. The former MLB star (Mulder) came from behind to best the retired NBA legend (Allen) on day three, strolling to a 10-point triumph over retired NFL kicker Ryan Longwell and former tennis professional Mardy Fish.

The event has been around since 1922, making it one of the oldest on the PGA Tour calendar. Over the years, it’s been held at a variety of courses across the Lone Star State, but it’s found its home at TPC San Antonio in recent years. Some of the biggest names in golf have taken home the title here, including Arnold Palmer, Ben Hogan, Lee Trevino, and Ben Crenshaw.

GolfWRX has its usual assortment of general galleries, WITBs and special pull-out albums. As always, we’ll continue to update the links below as more photos come in from TPC San Antonio.
