30 percent larger golf balls will fix your putting, says aptly named Big Balls

Published

on

Today in curious golf Kickstarter news: Big.Balls. Twenty-five-year-old Canadian entrepreneur Myles Doak’s effort to bring “the first oversized golf training ball” to market.

Turn down the volume on AC/DC’s “Big Balls” in your head, and check out the central claim: Big.Balls, which are 30 percent larger than traditional golf balls, will help you improve your putting.

How?

“After putting with Big.Balls. in practice, when golfers step onto the green with a standard size ball, the hole will subconsciously appear larger and increase the golfer’s confidence in hitting any short putt, Doak and company say.”

Taking the theory to its (perhaps) logical conclusion: the increased confidence will translate into more putts made.

More on the concept from Big.Balls. CEO Myles Doak

“Our over-sized golf balls are designed to work the same way practice balls for other sports industries do. Basketball players use oversized balls to practice shooting and some golfers even resort to using tennis balls to practice their putt. With Big.Balls., golfers are practicing with something as similar as they can get without buying gimmicky, expensive, tech-related golf products.”

And while the oversized balls seem to be designed exclusively for training, as far as we know the USGA only stipulates a minimum diameter for a golf ball and maximum weight, so you could play with a larger ball. (Obligatory sophomoric remark: In other words, verifiably having the biggest balls in your foursome).

    Really. .?

Ever stop to think that it is peoples green reading abilities and starting lines that cause miss putts… Funny how a putt in the middle of the hole goes in every time no matter the size of the ball. Practice missing on the high side of breaking putts. You will be surprised at how many get closer or even go in with you trying to miss the putt.

When asked what he thought about putting to tiny holes, Brad Faxon replied, “Stupid. Why would someone want to practice missing a putt?” People have enough trouble putting, making it harder to see a putt go in the hole, simply makes no sense.

Maybe one should have asked Brad Faxon, whether he is only practicing putts inside one foot distance…
…because, who want´s to miss a put at 10´ distance, if people already have enough trouble when putting at 5´ distance… 😉

A tiny hole in a smaller distance simulates the deviation allowed, by a bigger hole in a bigger distance…
…but with the advantage that the surface of the putting green has less effect on the line of the ball, because the hole you are aiming at is closer (substituting a bigger hole in a bigger distance).

Maybe someone should have explained him…

    30% larger by radius/diameter, 2D, or volume?

I think it is some sort of substitute for smaller holes on a putting green…

…however, a bigger ball should hold it´s line better on a green,
due to weight on a bigger radius, that stabilizes better…
    …like a bigger wheel on a bicycle…
…and it should be less prone to deviations due to unregularities on the green…
…just like bigger tyres on a car smoothen out a bumpy road.

    I think I would try them…

      Oversized basketballs to practice with
Smaller baseballs to practice being pitched with
Oversized golf balls to practice with. Same weight and same shell as traditional golf ball.

      Give them a try ! http://bit.ly/BigBallsKS

What do I Think? ummm….Top Flite Magna 2.0

when’s the new Air Hammer driver coming out…

Nike Covert Driver ? See…Bullet Golf Hollow Point Driver

Adjustible weight irons ? See Peter Belmont internal cavity adjustible heel-toe caterpillar weight screw

Some ideas were indeed ‘before there ‘time’ and now better
materials w/CAD modeling can recycle them and maybe
actually make them ‘really work’ as well as the original
    designer hoped.

some just sucked and still do

More interested in the $15 doz Costco balls. Maybe TOUR will wise-up and make them the ‘official game ball’….

Wouldn’t THAT ruffle some feathers 🙂

Wrong! When the golf ball gets larger the hole gets smaller. I’m for marble-sized golf balls.

Years ago Top Flite sold a slightly larger golf ball and it stayed around for a few years so there must of been some value to that idea.

    • Wow.....

Top Flite Magna I believe. Kinda like the Pro V1X seems bigger than other current golf balls (or my eyes are playing tricks on me….).

What GolfWRXers are saying about Kevin Kisner’s new Callaway X Forged CB irons

Published

on

In our forums, our members have been discussing Kevin Kisner’s new Callaway X Forged CB irons which he has in the bag at this week’s CJ Cup. WRXers have been commenting on the switch and the clubs themselves in our forums.

For lots more photos, check out the full thread here.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • btyh: “Holy offset.”
  • Glf_LU: “These are interesting. Not going to make a rush to judgement until I see them in person. It does look like a little more offset than I would expect to see in this model.”
  • bcflyguy1: “Kisner is not one to make a lot of equipment changes (see the GBB driver he’s still using), so if these do have staying power in his bag that will be interesting to see. I have to wonder if there’s something different about his set, because like others have mentioned there appears to be more offset on his than I recall seeing in the samples I’ve had in hand.”

WATCH: PGA Tour players play hole blindfolded and it’s hilarious/amazing

Published

on

As part of a Srixon campaign, four PGA Tour players recently participated in a three-hole challenge, with each hole being a different game; hole No. 1 was blindfolded, hole No. 2 was costumes and distractions, and hole No. 3 was alternate shot with a baseball bat. The teams were Smylie Kaufman and Sam Ryder against Shane Lowry and Grayson Murray.

Watch the full video below, since it is quite entertaining (albeit not the type of golf that Old Tom Morris surely had in mind), but in particular, make sure to check out the first hole where Lowry and Ryder play a full hole completely blind folded. It’s amazing to watch how badly Ryder struggles, and how Lowry nearly makes par.

Cleveland-Srixon’s marketing department has been hard at work crafting these viral-esque ad campaigns; if you remember, former long-drive champion Jamie Sadlowski recently dressed as 80-year-old Grandpa Jamie to fool range-goers. That video has since gathered over 1.2 million views on YouTube.
