Impending Golf Digest Hot List showstopper?

02golfdigest2-master495

User toshman kicked off a thread based on news from Golf Digest that one particular driver performed earth-shatteringly well in testing.

Here’s what Golf Digest’s Joel Beall wrote:

“Having one of our groups come to an agreement is rare; all three reaching the same conclusion is like getting snow in July. Yet there’s a product that had academics, retailers and testers swooning.

“If the science behind this is right – and the evidence certainly says so – this could be radical in the formation of driver construction,” said a scientist.”

To see what WRXers think the driver is, check out the thread.

All the “new Pro V1” takes

TitleistProV1x2017

We dedicated a Front Page story to forum reaction to Titleist’s new Pro V1 arriving on the PGA Tour for testing (as well as with select individuals for feedback). If you want to dive it to all the early opinions on the latest edition of the gold standard of golf balls and see plenty of pictures, this thread is the place to go. See the thread.

The older version was better!

ping g25 driver review

No, this isn’t grandpa talking about the decline of civilization since he was young. Joe90 dedicated a thread to a discussion of when newer doesn’t necessarily equal better in golf equipment. Specifically, when the previous generation of a club performs better than what follows.

He gives the example of the Ping G25 outperforming the G30. While it’s difficult to believe that, in this case, a manufacturer would bring a club to market that performed inferiorly to its predecessor on Iron Byron, there’s something to be said for the phenomenon. See the thread.

Takes on Tim Finchem’s retirement

tim-finchem-press-conference

If you missed the news, long-serving PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem is stepping down in January and Jay Monahan, currently COO of the Tour, will take over.

To see what WRXers think about the the news, Mr. Finchem’s tenure, and what they’d like to see next see the thread.

The horrors of the inside takeaway

The_importance_of_flattening_your_downswing

There are a few death moves in the golf swing, and whipping the club inside on the takeaway is one of them. We don’t give enough love to the instruction forum here in FTF, so here’s a thread discussion problem of/fixes for an inside takeaway.

Needless to say, when high-level amateurs, swing theory enthusiasts, and instructors get together to talk shop, the results are illuminating. And that’s just what happens in the instruction forum. See the thread.

I like that name, Lazerballz. May be that really should be one of the next ones for TM.

From the Forums: How are you liking TaylorMade’s Qi10 fairway woods?

Published

on

In our forums, our members have been discussing TaylorMade’s new Qi10 fairway woods. WRXer ‘ace036’ plans on testing them in the next few weeks, saying: “from how they look from address and frame the ball is much more appealing to my eye versus my current Paradym fairway woods.” And our members have been sharing their positive feedback in our forum.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • Edwardsr: “I got fit into the Qi10 core model with Ventus TR Black 8X and it’s absolutely amazing for me.During the fitting with my 12-15 swings with it, it was the most efficient combo I’ve ever tested, tons of 1.48 smash and 3 or 4 1.49 smash (which I don’t think I’ve ever gotten on 3 wood on a launch monitor).”
  • MiloMalt: “No complaints and so far only high praise for my Qi10 Tour 3 and 5 wood. I’m getting great numbers and a nice penetrating ball flight with great height whereas with my old TSi2 4 wood it was spinny and ballooning and short because of that.”
  • courcy75: “The Qi10 Tour 3 wood I just put in play has been outstanding for me. Finally found something I like as much as the 07 burner tp.”

From the Forums: Should I play a 3-wood or 5-wood?

Published

on

In our forums, our members have been discussing 3-woods, 5-woods and bag setups. WRXer ‘Cole Fleming’ is currently unsure of his setup, and reached out to fellow members, saying:

“Thoughts on people playing 3 vs 5-wood? I have a high SS 118 with driver 280s + carry. I really never use my 3-wood now as my course doesn’t really have the need unless I move to the back tees. I usually carry it about 260+. I’m ultimately looking for something easier to hit and maybe start trying to use it off the tee some to keep me out of trouble.

I also play a 7-wood. Love it so don’t want them to be to0 close. Ive never even considered or looked at a 5-wood. I have a fitting today so I’m sure I could test them, but wanted somewhat of an idea going into it to tell the fitter so I’m not swinging so many clubs.”

And our members have been sharing their thoughts on the matter, as well as mentioning what has worked best for their game.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • pu_golf88: “I’m dropping the 3 wood this year for a 5 wood. I hit my drivers a similar distance as you and find that my 3 wood isn’t a fairway finder, I really only use it if there’s a dogleg where a driver would go thru where I want to land the ball. I think a 5 wood goes far enough to use it as a fairway finder off the tee when I want more distance than hitting my 3 driving iron.”
  • T626G: “I myself have decided to try a 5-wood. Never really had much luck or need with a 3-wood. Should be easier to hit. I’m going to cut it down a 1/2″ just to help control it and swing easier.”
  • jedc: “Adjustable 5-wood turned down to 4-wood loft (and open looking face is nice). I had a fitting last month and really liked the PXG Black Ops 5-wood.”
