Danny Willett didn’t do himself any favors with these tweets

Published

on

After succinctly summing up his first Ryder Cup experience as “s**t,” a battered Danny Willett looked to have closed the door on a week he’d rather forget.

Diplomatic as could ever be expected in a week where he caught endless flak inside the ropes for a column his brother wrote, Willett said the following on Twitter earlier today.

Now, Danny did say “some.” Unfortunately for him, headlines pertaining to his tweets say things like “Danny Willett: American fans showed my brother was correct.” And the percentage of people who will see that headline, not read the article and thus know nothing about the “some” qualification, will be enough to create a further headache for Mr. Willett.

And of course, it won’t be a stretch for “some” fans to draw a connection between Willett’s comments and the fact that he plays minimally on the PGA Tour even though he’s fully exempt and label him as anti-American.

Is he? Almost certainly not. But in a world of information overloads and snap judgements, his tweets don’t do anything to help anyone not arrive at that conclusion.

And another unfortunate element here: Many will just see the tweets on his timeline when viewing the Masters champs Twitter profile, not both “tweets and replies.” And in his replies to users who commented the original two tweets, Willett expanded on the “some” element with statements like

…But unfortunately some fans take it too far too often and spoil it for others.. Most fans were great!!

…There were 100,000 great fans… Just the usual token daft ppl letting others down

….All I said is that what people said proved him to be correct in a few cases.. Not all.. But a few.

However, as “Danny Willett: Americans fans showed my brother was correct” makes for a more contentious, clickable headline, don’t expect to hear much about that.

The moral of the story is the same as it is for so many professional athletes: If you think there’s a possibility your social media utterance could be misconstrued, best not to post.

He only didn’t do himself any favours if we assume the media are scum that routinely misquote players to create scandal out of fresh air.

Which they are and do. Nothing short of unpunished LIBEL. Congrats journos. Beautiful world.

Danny proving he will be a one hit wonder (win only one major).

Just got done watching the History on Arnold. Talked about when Jack Nicklaus took on Arnie in Penn. Jack was called everything in the book. They even stomped on the ground in unison while he was putting and the ground shook all around him. He had such mental fortitude he didn’t even notice. Danny and others complaining are just showing thier hand of weakness. So does the Americans when they have complained about the crowds when the play is on foreign ground.

    Grow up guys.

As a dear friend once said, if it wasn’t for the USA, you Europeans would all be sucking on weinersnitchels right now.

Tour golf is not a team sport but cup matches are and that’s when the fans get engaged. All team sports are that way. When the visiting team misses the net on a penalty kick, the home crowd cheers, it’s only natural. Same as when a putt didn’t fall for the Euros and it will be the same for the USA in 2 years. You really can’t expect the polite behavior of the crowds at Tour golf events to remain the same at cup events and it’s absurd if the Euros feel that the fans somehow influenced the outcome. If that’s the case, they should not select Danny Willet or anyone else who played poorly to future cup matches. Some players can deal with it and some can’t.

Golf is supposed to be a gentlemens game, whilst I am English and it pained me to see Patrick Reed hole putt after putt, I couldn’t help but realise how classy he was on many occasions when he and Jordan Speith were shushing the crowd from cheering the missed putts from Europeans. When the home players are having to tell the crowd to give it a rest then the situation must be extreme. Whilst crowds should never be silent, they should certainly be respectful, ask the question- would any of those crowd members say any of the rubbish they said if they were walking in the street on their own to the European players? Probably not, a little courage juice and a strong backup of the crowd causes some people to be perhaps braver? Or more stupid than they would normally be!!

Besides the alcohol I think another factor was the size of the crowd. I believe an effort was made to police the fans as I saw a few fans kicked out Saturday and Sunday seemed a much better environment. I’m curious with the Paris crowd expected to be 3 times the size how rowdy the fans will get. I’m sure there will be fans that take bad behavior to far. I don’t know how it is in Europe but I know the USGA is trying to grow the game in America and the growth might come at the cost of the games soul losing as a gentlemans game.

Danny should have doubled down on his brother’s comments – that strategy works for some people on twitter.

This may be a weird analogy but I compare this to fighting in hockey.

Alot of people want to talk about how “disgusting” “appalling” “rude” etc…the fans were at the RC this year and how “we must address it.” In hockey, alot of people want to talk about how “barbaric” “disgusting” “horrible” etc…fighting is and how “we must get it out of the game.”

But I think we lose sight of the end result in both of these situations…was anyone watching the Ryder Cup this year, seeing Rory egging on the crowd, watching the players fist pump and shush each other, seeing the tension and sometimes animosity between the players and the crowd, all the side stories (Rory, Willet, etc..) and not thinking to themselves…”THIS IS AWESOME!” Did anyone walk away from their TV while Rory and Reed were dueling it out? Did anyone think that the young kid Pieters or Sergio egging on the crowd was boring? It was amazing. It brought an element to golf that action packed sports like Football and/or Futball, hockey, etc… have.

Same with fighting in hockey. The same people who whine and cry about fighting are the ones who stand in their seats and cheer at the game when one breaks out. Do you mean to tell me you change the channel if a fight breaks out in a hockey game? Hell no. Its awesome.

Just think we need some perspective on this whole thing. Was some of the stuff happening in the crowd inappropriate and should it be addressed in future RC…yes ofcourse. But dont sit and whine about it when as a whole you just watched an incredibly entertaining sporting event

And the crying from the Euro’s continues. Imagine that. Dude’s brother puts out derogatory tweets about Americans and then he has a bad experience in front of American crowds. Wtf did you think was gonna happen Danny?! Go back to England, have a cup of tea and then work on getting your overrated golf game in better shape.

    • Forsbrand

      Oct 4, 2016 at 3:29 pm

So overrated he won the US masters, must have been really lucky, very lucky indeed!
Just take your Ryder Cup win gratuitously, Europe have won it on the past four occasions so guess it was the US turn to take a win.

Let’s see what happens in the next match, maybe someone wil tweet “Patrick Reid ate my hamster”….so what

      • Clemson Sucks

        Oct 4, 2016 at 3:48 pm

Plenty of one-hit wonders who won a major and then disappeared into oblivion. And plenty of renowned golfers who only won a single major but still had great careers. It remains to be seen which bucket Danny will fall in, but certainly a pretty pathetic showing at the Ryder Cup and afterwards.

          Oct 5, 2016 at 1:06 pm

I think You’ll find we’re totally fine with you guys taking our crown, we’ll let you have it for a couple of years but well be having it back come 2018.

Lots of one hit wonders have at least crossed the line and are etched in history now, I’d take a green jacket any day of the week.

As for the whining learn to cheer or praise good shots and quit all the booing, shows lack of class.

      • John

        Oct 5, 2016 at 4:58 pm

Ask Jordan Speith if he feels he gave the green jacket away. Just like Greg Norman did to Faldo a long time ago. It doesn’t take anything away from the winners of those events but it certainly helped each of them to victory.

The whole world watches the Ryder Cup; it is broadcast worldwide and so the US looks bad in the eyes of the neutrals be it in the Far East, Australasia as well as in Europe and every other corner of the world. But you know what, all that the Hazeltine crowds have done is to further imbed the already held beliefs around the globe that the US are a nation of low-class, drunken and moronic fools. But I guess rather than tackle the issue (and it’s not the first time in RC history that the US crowds have acted in this way) the US will do what it always does – circle the wagons. I guess at least there was no-one firing guns when the putts were rolling in.

“Low Class, drunken moronic fools” you say. That’s the sort of comment PJ used (unwashed, etc.) for Americans that got the crowd fired up. We Americans have not forgotten elitist, class-based comments like that the British used in the 1770s when they sent their troops, marching to “The World is Upside Down,” over here to teach us that we were mere colonists, (i.e., servants) not British citizens and not ‘quality’ enough to run a functional government on our own. Evidence: The crowd responded with the US national anthem and another trouncing of The British. Tip: Don’t pull that snobby British class-krap on our soil if you want to win-or even get along. We know our history; Love III may have been our RC captain, but George Washington is still our general.

Oh no, some Americans are obnoxious, boo hoo. Apparently the Europeans are a bunch of whinging crybabies who have no problem having fun egging on the crowds when they’re winning, but instantly turn into a bunch of pussies when things go south? Is that right?

If you have to start explaining and qualifying your original tweet, you shouldn’t have tweeted it to begin with.

No, people aren’t going to read the entire chain of comments and secondary tweets by Willett, and he ought to be smart enough to know that.

“No, people aren’t going to read the entire chain of comments and secondary tweets by Willett, and he ought to be smart enough to know that.”

What he should have realized was the short attention span of the readers. Maybe then his tweet chain would have been shorter.

“But in a world of information overloads and snap judgements..”

Could have said the same about your piece earlier today on crowds v. players. Interesting topic and some valid questions raised, but you’d have done your writing abilities more justice to think about the issue for a few days instead of opting for your “hot take” that was, frankly, a hot mess.

What GolfWRXers are saying about Kevin Kisner’s new Callaway X Forged CB irons

Published

In our forums, our members have been discussing Kevin Kisner’s new Callaway X Forged CB irons which he has in the bag at this week’s CJ Cup. WRXers have been commenting on the switch and the clubs themselves in our forums.

For lots more photos, check out the full thread here.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • btyh: “Holy offset.”
  • Glf_LU: “These are interesting. Not going to make a rush to judgement until I see them in person. It does look like a little more offset than I would expect to see in this model.”
  • bcflyguy1: “Kisner is not one to make a lot of equipment changes (see the GBB driver he’s still using), so if these do have staying power in his bag that will be interesting to see. I have to wonder if there’s something different about his set, because like others have mentioned there appears to be more offset on his than I recall seeing in the samples I’ve had in hand.”

WATCH: PGA Tour players play hole blindfolded and it’s hilarious/amazing

Published

on

As part of a Srixon campaign, four PGA Tour players recently participated in a three-hole challenge, with each hole being a different game; hole No. 1 was blindfolded, hole No. 2 was costumes and distractions, and hole No. 3 was alternate shot with a baseball bat. The teams were Smylie Kaufman and Sam Ryder against Shane Lowry and Grayson Murray.

Watch the full video below, since it is quite entertaining (albeit not the type of golf that Old Tom Morris surely had in mind), but in particular, make sure to check out the first hole where Lowry and Ryder play a full hole completely blind folded. It’s amazing to watch how badly Ryder struggles, and how Lowry nearly makes par.

Cleveland-Srixon’s marketing department has been hard at work crafting these viral-esque ad campaigns; if you remember, former long-drive champion Jamie Sadlowski recently dressed as 80-year-old Grandpa Jamie to fool range-goers. That video has since gathered over 1.2 million views on YouTube.
