Dustin Johnson signs multi-year apparel, shoe deal with Adidas
Dustin Johnson has signed a multi-year deal with Adidas to wear the company’s apparel and shoes on the course, the company announced.
The deal is notable because Adidas currently owns TaylorMade, as well as golf brands Ashworth and Adams, but the German company plans to sell the brands and focus solely on Adidas-branded soft goods in the golf space. For that reason, TaylorMade’s independent announcement of its contract extension with Johnson last week, which will keep him using the company’s clubs, golf balls, and displaying the TaylorMade logo on the front of his hat, fed speculation that Johnson could defect to an Adidas competitor.
Jason Day, the No. 1 golfer in the Official World Golf Rankings, also re-signed with TaylorMade as his equipment sponsor, but according to reports Day will not continue to wear Adidas apparel on the course in 2017. ESPN’s Darren Rovell reported that Day signed a long-term apparel/shoe/hat deal with Nike that will pay him approximately $10 million per year.
This year (2016) was the best season of Johnson’s career. He won his first major championship in June (the U.S. Open), two high-profile PGA Tour events (the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational and the BMW Championship) and rose to No. 2 in the OWGR. He also received the PGA’s Player of the Year award, as well as the Vardon Trophy, awarded to the PGA Tour player with the season’s lowest adjusted scoring average.

A wise move for Adidas. Their gear is excellent quality and very affordable. And they have waaaaay more history and kudos than any other sports company.

I do not know about the rest of you people but I sure do not play like J. Day or DJ and I sure as heck don’t see any necessity to go out and dress like them or even play clubs like there’s (we cannot buy all the service and quality they have in their clubs anyway we can only play knockoffs of what they have).

I’ve never preferred Adidas and kinda wish he would have signed with Nike, Under Armour, Travis Mathew, etc. Just my personal preference as I don’t really like their style. But, I can definitely understand DJ following the money and the chance to become the face of a brand in the wake of Day’s departure

What don’t you like about adidas just out of curiosity?

Dude’s gotta thank J. Day for the payday! Adidas getting anxious after the world’s #1 going to Nike.

Except no – DJ is a bigger draw anyway and had a better year

He may be a big draw, but there is no doubt in my mind that Adidas overpaid to keep DJ. There’s no way they could afford to lose the #1 and #2 players in the world. In fact, I don’t think either would have signed with Adidas on their own if it weren’t for TaylorMade.
If they lose DJ and Day, their biggest draw would arguably be either Justin Rose or Sergio… both Europeans. They are both great golfers, but don’t have nearly the draw here in the USA as Day and DJ
