Rory hits 345-yard drive at PGA Championship long drive contest, but loses
Rory McIlroy leapt into the lead of the PGA Championship’s long drive contest with a 345-yard blast at Baltusrol’s converted par-4 first hole. After the figurative muscle flexing, the four-time major winner offered the literal variety as his then-leading yardage was announced.
Here’s the blast, per the PGA Championship’s Twitter.

And the reaction.
At 345 yards, your current #PGAChamp Long Drive leader…. @McIlroyRory! ????????????????#RoryAllAccess pic.twitter.com/jQNawQ7zAB

As SB Nation’s Brendan Porath pointed out, McIlroy’s musculature and weightlifting have become a topic of conversation in the world of golf recently. Brandel Chamblee offered a take on the Golf Channel, Johnny Miller suggested McIlroy’s tight shirts and workout regimen had adversely affected his performance during The Open, and earlier this week, a sports psychologist told Golf Channel’s Morning Drive that McIlroy may be “more interested in working out than playing golf.”
Doubtless McIlroy, in the echo chamber that is the PGA Tour, has heard these criticisms. We’ll stop short of saying Rory was throwing shade (probably wasn’t), but the bombed drive-and-flex routine was particularly timely.
McIlroy took the lead, as mentioned, with his 345-yard poke, but Byeong Hun-An bettered him a short while later to win the famed PGA Long Drive bronze money clip.

Anirban Lahiri won the long drive contest last year with a 327-yard drive. Louis Oosthuizen was tops at the reintroduction of the competition in 2014, hitting it 340 yards.

What GolfWRXers are saying about Kevin Kisner’s new Callaway X Forged CB irons
In our forums, our members have been discussing Kevin Kisner’s new Callaway X Forged CB irons which he has in the bag at this week’s CJ Cup. WRXers have been commenting on the switch and the clubs themselves in our forums.
For lots more photos, check out the full thread here.
Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- btyh: “Holy offset.”
- Glf_LU: “These are interesting. Not going to make a rush to judgement until I see them in person. It does look like a little more offset than I would expect to see in this model.”
- bcflyguy1: “Kisner is not one to make a lot of equipment changes (see the GBB driver he’s still using), so if these do have staying power in his bag that will be interesting to see. I have to wonder if there’s something different about his set, because like others have mentioned there appears to be more offset on his than I recall seeing in the samples I’ve had in hand.”

WATCH: PGA Tour players play hole blindfolded and it’s hilarious/amazing
As part of a Srixon campaign, four PGA Tour players recently participated in a three-hole challenge, with each hole being a different game; hole No. 1 was blindfolded, hole No. 2 was costumes and distractions, and hole No. 3 was alternate shot with a baseball bat. The teams were Smylie Kaufman and Sam Ryder against Shane Lowry and Grayson Murray.
Watch the full video below, since it is quite entertaining (albeit not the type of golf that Old Tom Morris surely had in mind), but in particular, make sure to check out the first hole where Lowry and Ryder play a full hole completely blind folded. It’s amazing to watch how badly Ryder struggles, and how Lowry nearly makes par.
What happens when 4 #PGATOUR pros take a day off?
Luckily, the cameras were rolling.

Cleveland-Srixon’s marketing department has been hard at work crafting these viral-esque ad campaigns; if you remember, former long-drive champion Jamie Sadlowski recently dressed as 80-year-old Grandpa Jamie to fool range-goers. That video has since gathered over 1.2 million views on YouTube.

The golf commentators are correct. Do you want to be ripped or do you want to be the worlds best golfer? Working out can often be counter productive if its not done VERY specifically. If you aren’t going to do a very golf specific workout designed for you individually, then I would simply agree with Hogan… “If you want to get stronger, hit more balls.”

This whole Rory working out too much, and steroid stuff is a joke. the guy is very small. and as longball said if you cant reach 400 yrd consistently in long driver you will not go far.

The only reason people accuse Tiger and Rory of steroid use is because they don’t understand what it takes to build muscle and look “ripped”. I’ll give you guys a hint, it starts by stepping away from the keyboard and putting down the french fries and soda!

He should convert to doing Long Drive Championships around the world, and he should sponsor the events, as the LD world needs help to sustain itself right now

Hahahhaha I can hit my 3w past Rory and am a low level long drive guy.. He’d get destroyed

Yeah, exactly… these long drive guys hit it 400+. Also, not nearly as much money making the long drive circuit as placing in Tour events….
Mmmmm
Jul 27, 2016 at 12:11 pm
They only hit it past 400 now and again, downwind with 50 inch shafts and they barely hit the target with the 6 balls they’re given. Rory is doing that with a normal club. If he was given a 50 inch club and practiced a bit, he’d be right there with the LD guys. And could bomb his own 3wood past all you Susans
