McIlroy vs. Pieters: Who threw it better?

Published

on

In the grand tradition of post-awards show assessment of who wore a similar dress better, we bring you: Who threw it better?

Rightfully obscured by the brilliant play of Henrik Stenson and Phil Mickelson at Royal Troon were a couple of instances of epic club destruction.

Exhibit A: Rory McIlroy’s 3-wood tomahawk

After not hitting the shot he was hoping for at the par-5 16th in the third round, Rory McIlroy took out his frustrations on his offending Nike Vapor Speed 3-wood.

Exhibit B: Thomas Pieters club-snap and gorse abuse

Thomas Pieters became unglued on the 11th hole during his final round. Making a mess of things and lying 7 at the difficult hole, Pieters finally advanced his ball in a way he was happy with. At this point, he decided he no longer had any use for his iron and that he’d had enough fun with the fairway skirting gorse.

While we don’t necessarily condone on-course temper tantrums, they are an inevitable part of this maddening game.

With that in mind…

Who had the superior meltdown at the Open Championship?

Pieters for sure. Great example of club snapping and the ole heave ho!

One could argue, Rory wasn’t trying to break his club, it just happened. No one could mistake Thomas Pieters’ intentions! The award goes to Pieters

Hey my clubs can think ,I know they can because every time they get the trunk treatment they are way better next time, they don’t like the dark.

The way Rory has been paying he should have thrown the whole bag.
    He’s as over as Tiger.

Hahah, I saw both of those live and cracked up. It’s refreshing to see as good as these players are, they’re still human like the rest of us.

It’s not like Stenson’s a saint either when it comes to club destroying theatrics…if he hadn’t played like he had last week I can’t imagine he wouldn’t have done a similar thing.

He would have withdrawn (quit) with “nagging injuries.”

Saw Bello do the same thing to wedge the week before at the Scottish Open on the 16th after 3 attempts to chip it up on the green. Wasn’t many spectators there but was a few youngsters… We all know how maddening this game can get but these guys are meant to be professionals and it’s not just low scoring that this should encompass.

Pieters ‘wins’ for me, boy this lad has talent but REALLY needs to cheer up on the course – makes Monty look like, er, um, well a bit less like Monty!

…few youngsters. These are grown men doing a job for enormous sums of money. As Charles Barkley put it, they aren’t role models. Ricky wearing bright Puma orange and having the parents go out and overspend for their kid to walk around in Puma gear is simply marketing genius by a company who understands the level of genius of the average American

Wish they did the Protracer on their club throws like here: http://www.aussiegolfer.com.au/here-is-why-there-is-no-pro-tracer-in-amateur-golf-video/

    Pieters wins for sure.

Rory was mad, but I don’t think the intention was to break the club, Pieters grabbed it by the balls and broke the crap out of it.

Stuff got real fast with Pieters

Shows a lack of class by both of these guys. Yes, golf can test your emotions and temper and sometimes it puts you over the edge…I get that. So I understand the occasional exploitive. Or the clubhead thump into the ground in anger. But throwing clubs or just splitting it over your knee shows you can’t handle it. This isn’t baseball, hockey, or football, where it’s ok to show those high emotions in such a manner. It’s golf. Hold onto your club, and keep your cool. It’s just a bad example set for all the juniors out there watching. Especially when such an icon like Rory McIlroy does it. I’ve seen this done plenty of times in my weekend rounds with my buddies, and everytime I just shake my head..like really? Act like a man. I also see it as a great disrespect for the golf course itself.

I know people will say it’s not a big deal, but for me I just lose respect for guys when they throw clubs, especially my frequent playing partners.

Oh P.S. – All that said, Rory wins. His was a throw/break combo at the same time whereas Pieters was just a standard break then throw. Rory gets extra points for same damage with less effort.

        Jul 18, 2016 at 6:36 pm

Yeah but afterwards Rory tried to run some jive by the press that part of the reason for the club head coming off was that he had noticed that during the round that head felt like it was coming loose so he had to have it re shafted anyway:

The club head came loose on it earlier on the week,” McIlroy said. “I had to get the head re-glued. So it was probably partly to do with that and partly the throw as well. I’ll get it reshafted tonight.”

        What a crock.

Why is football, baseball, or hockey different? It’s their job with large sums of money. There is no gentlemanly in PGA Tour level golf tournaments, they are all for sponsorship and money, as well as the tour itself. Did you ask, why did the tv show it in the first place? So we would be talking about it.

That thing with Pieters requires a lot more explanation.

Which iron did he snap? He threw the head away!!! What does he do after that? Get one new club? Did he have an identical backup set? Toss the entire set of irons?

It actually made me wonder if The Open was going to be the last event for that set of irons for Pieters no matter what. He had (I think) an older set of Razr Muscelbacks. Nothing wrong with those clubs, and I can’t imagine what else he’d be going to as a Callaway staffer. Just a very weird incident. I can’t imagine that the broken iron stayed in the gorse bush for long.

What GolfWRXers are saying about Kevin Kisner’s new Callaway X Forged CB irons

Published

on

In our forums, our members have been discussing Kevin Kisner’s new Callaway X Forged CB irons which he has in the bag at this week’s CJ Cup. WRXers have been commenting on the switch and the clubs themselves in our forums.

For lots more photos, check out the full thread here.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • btyh: “Holy offset.”
  • Glf_LU: “These are interesting. Not going to make a rush to judgement until I see them in person. It does look like a little more offset than I would expect to see in this model.”
  • bcflyguy1: “Kisner is not one to make a lot of equipment changes (see the GBB driver he’s still using), so if these do have staying power in his bag that will be interesting to see. I have to wonder if there’s something different about his set, because like others have mentioned there appears to be more offset on his than I recall seeing in the samples I’ve had in hand.”

WATCH: PGA Tour players play hole blindfolded and it’s hilarious/amazing

Published

on

As part of a Srixon campaign, four PGA Tour players recently participated in a three-hole challenge, with each hole being a different game; hole No. 1 was blindfolded, hole No. 2 was costumes and distractions, and hole No. 3 was alternate shot with a baseball bat. The teams were Smylie Kaufman and Sam Ryder against Shane Lowry and Grayson Murray.

Watch the full video below, since it is quite entertaining (albeit not the type of golf that Old Tom Morris surely had in mind), but in particular, make sure to check out the first hole where Lowry and Ryder play a full hole completely blind folded. It’s amazing to watch how badly Ryder struggles, and how Lowry nearly makes par.

Cleveland-Srixon’s marketing department has been hard at work crafting these viral-esque ad campaigns; if you remember, former long-drive champion Jamie Sadlowski recently dressed as 80-year-old Grandpa Jamie to fool range-goers. That video has since gathered over 1.2 million views on YouTube.
