Jordan Spieth didn’t like Golf Channel’s headline, and he let them know

Published

on

Oh, web 2.0 world, how we love thee. Kudos to ESPN Senior Writer Kevin Van Valkenburg for catching this response from Jordan Spieth to a Golf Channel tweet referencing a Will Gray story titled, “Spieth makes triple bogey, criticizes hole.”

Spieth made a triple-bogey eight at the par-five 16th hole during Saturday’s third round was asked to recount what happened at the hole, at which point he said it is a “poor hole from where we play the tee box,” and expanded on his view.

Obviously, the 22-year-old took issue with GC’s tweeted link to the article along with this text: “’I think it’s a poor hole from where we play it.’ Spieth’s not a fan of No. 16 after triple.”

And asked about his tweeted reply to the Golf Channel after his round, Spieth offered a thoughtful reply that’s worth quoting at length.

How often do you look at social media, and where is the tipping point that you feel the need to respond to social media?

JORDAN SPIETH: Only when I’m really bored. Certain locations where there’s not a whole lot to do, this week is one where you’re just in a hotel. I didn’t really have anybody come to the tournament, so I just go back and I’m just sitting there, and you can only flip through so many channels before you’re just kind of on your phone.

But I’ve been working a lot, like I told you guys, working on my mental attitude on the golf course, playing quicker but also doing less talking to hit it, walk up to the next shot, hit it from there.

It’s tough to do because you think of the whole round and process as a goal and a challenge, so you get caught up sometimes in your whole goal for the day and how your shot has affected that. But I felt like I did a really good job with that. I felt like yesterday even on the 8, I was kind of shocked at where the ball came down, and before I hit the next shot I had already laughed at whatever, I was already smiling. I thought I was really positive afterwards about the whole scenario.

And in my feed, I follow a lot of obviously golf things, so I’m a fan of golf. I don’t search it out for me. But when a headline reads kind of makes triple bogey and blames the hole, I’m like, I don’t think that was fair because I talked about that hole last year, the year before, and a video of it Wednesday. I was not blaming the hole after I made an 8. I had already previously said that, and I just happened to just mis-hit a shot.

I certainly don’t ever want to go down as a whiner or complainer or anything because we live the life. We truly are very, very lucky to do what we do, and I don’t take that for granted and I don’t ever want to go down as high maintenance or complaining about any situation, but at the same time, you guys want honesty, and I’ll tell you what every single player says is that’s a much better hole from 50 yards up.

So I was just a little frustrated with that being out and kind of maybe giving off as me complaining because I didn’t perform on that hole. But all in all, I shouldn’t really get involved in social media. It doesn’t do anything for me. But again, it’s rare.

What do you think? Do you, like Van Valkenburg, commend Jordan Spieth for calling out a clickbait headline as such? Or do you agree, as Spieth himself said, he’s better off steering clear of the Twitterverse as much as possible?

he complains and moans everytime he hits a bad shot (pretty much every shot)
he’s petulant and needs to learn to respect the game.

Who cares if he doesn’t like a hole. Woods used to skip Westchester because he didn’t like the course.

He’s calling out a clickbait article. How is that whining? If someone did it to you, which will never happen, you would call it out too. At least on Twitter, since you’re a keyboard warrior and wouldn’t have the guts to do it in person.

Most sports journalists report and don’t play the game or don’t play it very well. That’s why they report for a living. I will leave it at thst.

RG hit the nail on the head. In this case the reporter mis-reported what happpened. It appears to be an attempt to create controversy where there is none. As Spieth pointed out, his criticism of the hole setup was not prompted by scoring an 8 on the hole.

Social media, love it or leave it. I think it should change names to “bashing media”.

  16. Bob Jones

The best thing would be for golfers to get off social media entirely, but then given The Press, the players probably have to be on it in self-defense.

There used to be some semblance of truth and accountability in the media. I find little evidence of that anywhere any more – it’s all about sensationalism, trying to grab ratings, and the internet is the worst of the worst. Twitter, Facebook and the like do more to bring out the worst in people – especially the media. The only thing more offensive and time-wasting are anonymous comments sections at the bottom of every online article and blog.

All this jibber jabber in the media reminds me of elementary school. The class instigator says,”Johnny said he can kick your butt.” Johnny, in reality, has said nothing. “You tell Johnny to meet me on the playground after school and we’ll see about that.” The class instigator goes to Johnny and says,” Billy said he’s gonna kick your butt on the playground after school.” Johnny replies,” Oh yeah, we’ll see about that.” Johnny and Billy meet on the playground after school. The whole class is there. They beat each other to a bloody pulp, both get suspended from school. Meanwhile the instigator just laughs and laughs. Sports reporting in this era has turned into the instigator. They make something out of nothing, and when the day is over they just laugh and laugh.

Poor ol Jordy? For explaining himself?? If you don’t like him, fine, we all have our own tastes…but you’re going to hate on the dude for putting someone (probably not too far off from yourself) in their place for over-exaggerating and twisting a quote? More honesty in my sports, please. Especially in this sport. Regardless of your opinion of the player, props to JS for continuing to give it to us straight.

What GolfWRXers are saying about Kevin Kisner’s new Callaway X Forged CB irons

Published

on

In our forums, our members have been discussing Kevin Kisner’s new Callaway X Forged CB irons which he has in the bag at this week’s CJ Cup. WRXers have been commenting on the switch and the clubs themselves in our forums.

For lots more photos, check out the full thread here.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • btyh: “Holy offset.”
  • Glf_LU: “These are interesting. Not going to make a rush to judgement until I see them in person. It does look like a little more offset than I would expect to see in this model.”
  • bcflyguy1: “Kisner is not one to make a lot of equipment changes (see the GBB driver he’s still using), so if these do have staying power in his bag that will be interesting to see. I have to wonder if there’s something different about his set, because like others have mentioned there appears to be more offset on his than I recall seeing in the samples I’ve had in hand.”

WATCH: PGA Tour players play hole blindfolded and it’s hilarious/amazing

Published

on

As part of a Srixon campaign, four PGA Tour players recently participated in a three-hole challenge, with each hole being a different game; hole No. 1 was blindfolded, hole No. 2 was costumes and distractions, and hole No. 3 was alternate shot with a baseball bat. The teams were Smylie Kaufman and Sam Ryder against Shane Lowry and Grayson Murray.

Watch the full video below, since it is quite entertaining (albeit not the type of golf that Old Tom Morris surely had in mind), but in particular, make sure to check out the first hole where Lowry and Ryder play a full hole completely blind folded. It’s amazing to watch how badly Ryder struggles, and how Lowry nearly makes par.

Cleveland-Srixon’s marketing department has been hard at work crafting these viral-esque ad campaigns; if you remember, former long-drive champion Jamie Sadlowski recently dressed as 80-year-old Grandpa Jamie to fool range-goers. That video has since gathered over 1.2 million views on YouTube.
