Update: Dec. 3: Per the Irish Independent: McIlroy popped the question over the weekend in Paris (she said yes). 

Rory McIlroy dated tennis star Caroline Wozniacki from 2011 through May of 2014, when the golfer called off the pair’s engagement saying he “wasn’t ready for all that marriage entails.”

In contrast to the very public Wozilroy relationship and breakup, McIlroy has taken a different, decidedly more private tack with his current girlfriend.

The Ulsterman’s new flame, Erica Stoll, manager of Championship Volunteer Operations at the PGA of America, has been linked to the golfer since April of last year.

The pair combined for one of the great golf relationship footnotes of all time: Stoll was the PGA official who realized McIlroy wasn’t on site at the 2012 Ryder Cup and arranged a convoy to get him to Medinah on time.

McIlroy and Stoll haven’t paraded before the paparazzi in the year-plus of their courtship, but the pair were spotted at the Irish Open in May, and McIlroy commented on the relationship shortly thereafter in The Times of London.

“I am very happy in my love life. We haven’t really been putting it out there. She is from America, which is why I like to spend time in Palm Beach.”

It’s notable then, that Stoll appeared with McIlroy at the trophy presentation at the DP World Tour Championship, and those who whisper about such things are suggesting that the appearance and photo op mark a new era in Mr. McIlroy’s love life.

A Nov. 29 report in the Irish Independent has multiple sources saying Rory could be headed for the altar soon. Of course, this is the same publication that erroneously reported McIlroy/Wozniacki’s breakup in August of 2013, so take the reports with a grain of salt.

Nevertheless, speaking with the aforementioned multiple sources, the Independent’s Niamh Horan indicated that Rory has found “the one,” and that marriage seems imminent.

Friends say that Rory feels very confident that the blonde beauty is the woman for him. “Don’t be surprised if you hear he pops the question, it’s going very, very well,” a friend said. A separate source also revealed how Erica had met Rory’s friends in Florida and Ireland recently and said that his circle have warmed to her and delight in the effect she has on the golfer.

“She’s a really, really nice girl,” said the well-placed source. “Very nice and down to earth and the one thing everyone is saying is how good she is for Rory. I wouldn’t be surprised if they do tie the knot. You know the saying ‘when you know – you know’ [you’ve met the right person] and I think Rory is there now.

Again, the contrast between the McIlroy-Wozniacki relationship and the McIlroy-Stoll relationship is interesting, but ultimately nobody’s business but theirs. What is important for golf fans, however, after all the talk of a Wozniacki-induced slump in 2013, is that he’s played much better as a component of Stolilroy, as it were.
