You can wear blue jeans at Tiger Woods’ Bluejack National

Published

on

Tiger Woods’ first U.S. design venture, Blue National, opened a seven-hole loop for member play Nov. 5.

Based on recent information and Dave Stockton Jr.’s remarks following a clinic he and his putting guru father conducted last week, there’s no shortage of intrigue at Woods’ follow-up to El Cardonal at Diamante.

Situated amid 755 acres of rolling countryside in the Piney Woods of Montgomery County, Bluejack is slated for completion in early 2016.

“He did a helluva job with this design,” Stockton said of the Southeast Texas track.

The top teacher added:

“There is a relaxed feel. If you want to wear jeans, fine. You want to wear your shirt untucked, fine. Look at golf today. Why is the game struggling to find new people to come play? Maybe they don’t want to get dressed up. Today’s kids, and some adults, want a little more relaxed attitude.”

A “relaxed attitude” is an interesting juxtaposition with a course that, from available photos, looks very much like a certain Augusta, Georgia, track not exactly known for its laxity.

Montgomery, Texas, 50 miles north of Houston (and birthplace of the Texas Lone Star Flag), is the home to what will likely be Woods coming-out party as a course designer. And not so much for the aesthetics of the 18-holes, but for design features intended to speed up play (no rough, limited bunkers) and facilitate youth and family play (kids’ tees).

To that end, expect to hear a lot about how the course fits into the eventual 386-resident community.

Consider “The Playgrounds” and “The Fort.”

Here’s how Bluejack describes the two.

The Playgrounds is a unique short-course golf experience created by Tiger Woods Design for Bluejack National. The Playgrounds will be expertly contoured and meticulously maintained, making it ideal for serious practicing from 130 to 40 yards and closer. However, its routing will be left to the imagination of the individual players, making it fun for families, those new to the game, and groups of friends, as well.

Designed as the world’s coolest hangout, The Fort will offer an array of activities for every member of the family.

Highlights will include:

  • Tennis Center
  • Zip Lines

  • Tree House

  • Resort-Style Swimming Pool

  • Old Time Burger Shack

  • Fishing

  • Skate Park

  • Bowling

  • Miniature Fenway Park

Skate park? Miniature Fenway Park? We’ll get the GolfWRX research staff on it, but those are likely firsts at a golf course.

Regarding the dovetailing of course design with community planning, T.W. told Golf.com:

The design has integrated a number of techniques to facilitate this – there is no rough, the fairways are generous, and the front of the greens are open and grassed with a greens grade quality grass to promote creative shot making.

These qualities help to create a golf course where different levels of golfers can play at the same time for an overall enjoyable, fun experience.

We’ve also created “The Playgrounds,” which is a 10-hole short course that is ideal for golfers of all ages and skill levels. The Playgrounds is going to be wonderful for families and entertaining friends, but I also see it as an ideal place to introduce new players to the game in a fun and relaxed setting.

Ultimately, though, it may be all about the jeans. We know Tiger loves a good (bad) pair of jeans.

This will be the most or one of the most expensive clubs in Houston $125,000+ initiation and $1000+ a month dues before you even use the club. It might have 300 hundred members. So they shouldn’t even mention trying to grow the game in the article this place will be a rich mans play ground.

I really wish courses like this would have some sort of “public days.” Maybe 1 or 2 days a month on a weekday for the public to play. It’s a shame that these courses get built and then only the lucky few that know someone get to play it.

If they made it public, it would take them too long to pay back the money they borrowed to break even, and it would cost more money to maintain from the amount of play it would get, as the public won’t fix divots, rake bunkers, nor ball marks on greens, there’ll be more trash to clean up and need more personnel to run it from day to day with the need for more carts and etc etc.

        what a load of bull…
members destroy bunkers just as much as the public, you’re kidding yourself if you think otherwise.

True story. I have worked at three private clubs, two are very high-end and unranked bunkers, unfixed ball marks, and spike marks are rampant. I have pictures of tire tracks going through low areas on cart path only days, some almost running over signs that say no carts and this from people who pay $700+ per month. The sheer number of players however would increase greatly and thus, wear and tear would be an issue

Caddies…caddies take care of golf courses. If there are no caddies at your course, it’s no different than a public on.

Sounds awesome. I will say that The Ridge Club in Cape Cod has a miniature Fenway, so that is not a first…

Hats off to Tiger. In this country the game of golf is dying a slow death. Promoting a more inclusive, friendly, nonthreatening atmosphere is what golf needs.

I’ve played for 20yrs, grew up at a stuffy country club and just can’t bring myself to even wear jeans to a public driving range…..but I applaud this move.

Now there’s an unappreciative idiot saying idiotic things.

Golf will never die, it won’t ever die slowly, either.

It may have overblown its peak like the stock market did, fall a bit, and then will continue as it always has done. What we’re seeing now is just a slight drop back to where it should probably be, anyway.

So go back in your closet and stay there, Keith

Yes, it may not die but as a fact it is globally diminishing, and we definitely need a change in the industry. Whether that starts from the course or the way the game is viewed from the population that is yet to play the game, we need younger generations to pay attention to the game more. Back then it was Tiger’s domination of the game that brought a lot of interest to young juniors but now the competition is tight and there is no true standout in the bunch. Yes, statistically Rory would be on top but that isn’t necessary what promotes the game. The games needs a new approach just like what TW is trying to do with his course or Mr. Player’s idea of 12 hole courses to create brand new golfers from any generations.

not a fan of jeans. also they aren’t comfortable to play in and get super sweaty. but if you are paying as much as it costs to be a member and play there then i think you are going to wear whatever you want

Actually, no, I can’t wear jeans on this course. Unless of course I want join this private club. I wish the trend was public with high greens fees. Make it a destination course like Torrey Pines.

No rough. Short. Easy access to the greens. Tiger built a course he can play.

I only play one course a year where I can’t wear jeans. Costs a lot to go there. I want to spend my golf money on playing and the odd lesson. Not on clothes that don’t make me play better.

I think Woods will turn out as a brilliant architect, maybe the best. He knows golf.
But bluejeans on a golf course? I don’t like it, he should not sign on for a project leike that.

What GolfWRXers are saying about Kevin Kisner’s new Callaway X Forged CB irons

Published

In our forums, our members have been discussing Kevin Kisner’s new Callaway X Forged CB irons which he has in the bag at this week’s CJ Cup. WRXers have been commenting on the switch and the clubs themselves in our forums.

For lots more photos, check out the full thread here.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • btyh: “Holy offset.”
  • Glf_LU: “These are interesting. Not going to make a rush to judgement until I see them in person. It does look like a little more offset than I would expect to see in this model.”
  • bcflyguy1: “Kisner is not one to make a lot of equipment changes (see the GBB driver he’s still using), so if these do have staying power in his bag that will be interesting to see. I have to wonder if there’s something different about his set, because like others have mentioned there appears to be more offset on his than I recall seeing in the samples I’ve had in hand.”

WATCH: PGA Tour players play hole blindfolded and it’s hilarious/amazing

Published

on

As part of a Srixon campaign, four PGA Tour players recently participated in a three-hole challenge, with each hole being a different game; hole No. 1 was blindfolded, hole No. 2 was costumes and distractions, and hole No. 3 was alternate shot with a baseball bat. The teams were Smylie Kaufman and Sam Ryder against Shane Lowry and Grayson Murray.

Watch the full video below, since it is quite entertaining (albeit not the type of golf that Old Tom Morris surely had in mind), but in particular, make sure to check out the first hole where Lowry and Ryder play a full hole completely blind folded. It’s amazing to watch how badly Ryder struggles, and how Lowry nearly makes par.

Cleveland-Srixon’s marketing department has been hard at work crafting these viral-esque ad campaigns; if you remember, former long-drive champion Jamie Sadlowski recently dressed as 80-year-old Grandpa Jamie to fool range-goers. That video has since gathered over 1.2 million views on YouTube.
