U.S. Mid-Am winner seeks donations to play in the Masters

Published

on

U.S. Mid-Am winner Sammy Schmitz has a GoFundMe page (set up by his wife) to fund his Masters practice. Schmitz is permitted to make trips to Augusta to play the course in preparation for the April tournament.

The 35-year-old, who won the Mid-Am in dramatic fashion, holing his tee shot on a par four, works in the healthcare industry in Wisconsin.

From the page:

“This victory landed him several invitations to golf greatest amateur events in the United States and a chance to win a green jacket! As exciting of a time this is for my family, it has also become one of concern due to the high costs of travel, lodging, entry fees, caddies, etc….We are learning it will take upwards of $30,000 to make these dreams come true.

“Being a father of two beautiful girls and having bills and daily expenses has made it very difficult to find the additional income to make his dreams come true. I’m trying to raise money to make this lifetime dream become a reality! We currently live in a small town in Wisconsin where the winters are filled with snow and the cold temperatures will make it almost impossible to practice.

“Being a nurse I can only pick up so many extra shifts to help support my husband, but I am determined to raised enough money, with your help, to send my most deserving husband on this amazing journey!”

What’s your take: Brilliant? Ridiculous? Deplorable? The new standard? Hey, why not? He’s not going to break 80 so this is a huge waste of money?

And by the way: He’s going to get the money, and the fact that this story is being so widely reported will necessarily help. So, you’re welcome, Sammy.

See, more than halfway to his goal after one day…

I was a volunteer at that event at Johns Island West in Vero Beach, was behind the green when he had the hole in one on the par four 15th. Mr. Sammy Schmitz is a really nice and good guy and his friends made it possible for his wife to make it for the final 36 holes, she pulled in as he was about to tee off. I hope the amount needed is raised, he deserves it. Good luck to him and his team.

Ben your coming off like a bit of a nob the guy won achieved something phenomenal and has some once in a lifetime opportunities. Very little said in congratulations to his achievement and it’s something that he earned and worked for, I don’t believe there’s a single thing that he owes to you.

How does this fit in with the rules of AM status?? If I’m an AM and someone offers to pay may airfare and put me up at a hotel so I can play in an event, thought that was a no no – a la Harvie Ward/Eddie Lowery??

I know several AMs have been asked by the Augusta member from their state to play and are basically put up by them.

Kudos to this dude and his family to ask for donations. Some people would rather go into hideous amounts of debt than say help.

Is it a lot of money? Sure. Could we complain about how this perpetuates the elitist and exclusionary nature of the game of golf? Absolutely. But, I think this is a fantastic example of what makes our country so great. There are very few places in the world, if any, where this story would take place. I appreciate that when someone says, “I need help”, we have a voluntary civil society in this country that is willing to step up and help.

Plus, it’s cool. Dude made a hole-in-one on a par four.

This kind of story goes on all the time in other countries in the world.

It requires getting out of this country and its bubble once in a while to lose this kind of arrogance. Try it some time, Alexdub. Get a passport, and go golf elsewhere. You might find that America is wonderful, but by no means terribly unique (except in its health care).

Just another example how Augusta is everything that wrong with golf. The tournament that is more hyped than any of the 4 majors despite being the youngest and statistically the easiest to win due to the field size and make up. They play up how they are giving back to the amateur golfers and its done at the expense of the player. The club takes home millions yet they cant front lodging, practice rounds and caddie fees for these armatures? Now the public is helping the golfers out instead of the club that is raking in on this? Some day people will wise up to all the things going on in Augusta Georgia.

Unfair to throw this on Augusta National. . As an amatuer he can’t accept the free round, loging or anythign of the sort.

Secondly, the $30k wasn’t about only Augusta and the Masters. It was clearly stated that he was invited to play in some of the most prestigous am events of the year. This is so he has a change to play all of those events, as well as prepare and play at Augusta.

Masters is everything that is wrong with golf (elitist etc) however it is a great course and usually a great tournament. How it’s a major is beyond me but you’ve got to hand it to them.

If we were allowed to decide where our charity(taxes) went then society would be VERY different…

What GolfWRXers are saying about Kevin Kisner’s new Callaway X Forged CB irons

Published

on

In our forums, our members have been discussing Kevin Kisner’s new Callaway X Forged CB irons which he has in the bag at this week’s CJ Cup. WRXers have been commenting on the switch and the clubs themselves in our forums.

For lots more photos, check out the full thread here.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • btyh: “Holy offset.”
  • Glf_LU: “These are interesting. Not going to make a rush to judgement until I see them in person. It does look like a little more offset than I would expect to see in this model.”
  • bcflyguy1: “Kisner is not one to make a lot of equipment changes (see the GBB driver he’s still using), so if these do have staying power in his bag that will be interesting to see. I have to wonder if there’s something different about his set, because like others have mentioned there appears to be more offset on his than I recall seeing in the samples I’ve had in hand.”

WATCH: PGA Tour players play hole blindfolded and it’s hilarious/amazing

Published

on

As part of a Srixon campaign, four PGA Tour players recently participated in a three-hole challenge, with each hole being a different game; hole No. 1 was blindfolded, hole No. 2 was costumes and distractions, and hole No. 3 was alternate shot with a baseball bat. The teams were Smylie Kaufman and Sam Ryder against Shane Lowry and Grayson Murray.

Watch the full video below, since it is quite entertaining (albeit not the type of golf that Old Tom Morris surely had in mind), but in particular, make sure to check out the first hole where Lowry and Ryder play a full hole completely blind folded. It’s amazing to watch how badly Ryder struggles, and how Lowry nearly makes par.

Cleveland-Srixon’s marketing department has been hard at work crafting these viral-esque ad campaigns; if you remember, former long-drive champion Jamie Sadlowski recently dressed as 80-year-old Grandpa Jamie to fool range-goers. That video has since gathered over 1.2 million views on YouTube.
