Adam Scott dumps the long putter for The Presidents Cup
Adam Scott has had a rocky relationship with his putters this year, bouncing between short and anchored putters. And the stats prove it; he finished 158th out of 184 players in strokes-gained putting in 2015.
But based on a report from the PGA Tour, Scott is committing to a short putter at the Presidents Cup and for the foreseeable future. He used a short putter with a cross-handed grip during his first practice round at the Jack Nicklaus Golf Club Korea, site of the Presidents Cup.
[quote_box_center]“I felt as comfortable as with the [long putter],” Scott told the PGA Tour. “The way I think about it, I putt with just the left hand anyway and that’s where it comfortably sat on this particular putter. It feels the same as I did in Doral, and the motion feels very similar to putting with the longer putter, as well, kind of mimicking it without it up in the chest.”[/quote_box_center]
Scott started the 2015 season using a claw grip on a short putter, and finished T4 in his first tournament of the year at the WGC-Cadillac Championship. The relationship turned sour over the next few events, however, and he went back to an anchored putter for The Masters and the remainder of the season.
But with the anchored putter ban quickly approaching on Jan. 1, 2016, he’s made his decision to switch to the short putter, and stick with it.
“I think this is a more permanent move this time,” Scott said. “I think I just have to stick with it now and get good at it.”
The report says that Scott will putt with the same Scotty Cameron Futura prototype head he’s used for his previous events, but with a different grip and shaft length.

Hopefully now he has the shorter putter he will get his head over the ball. Previously with the long putter it was outside his eyeline giving him a big loop. Cannot be consistently hitting the ball in the right place with a loop like that. Lastly hold your finish as all other great putters do.

Scott should stop gaming all these goofy putters and take out his old Newport putter and stick to it. He won with it in previous years so why not today. Scotty is just using him as a ginny pig.

it’s the older fellows who suffer from this ban, tour pro’s will just adjust to something else – it’s the guys who can’t physically bend over enough who suffer (the ones who actually spend money at golf courses).

Perfect. They can all go play some other game. Those who can bend over don’t care about the ones who can’t.

Until your favorite course closes down because they aren’t pulling in the revenue that that used to be. Alienating any players is bad for the sport for something with such a simple fix.

“I think this a more permanent move this time”???? Does he have a choice? The USGA made the right move regarding anchoring, and although I hate to use him an example, Adam is a the perfect reason why. Putting is the game within the game, and even if you can bomb it, pure it, stick it tight, if you can’t roll it, your results will always be mediocre at best. At least he got his major in before the ban!

Actually, he does have a choice – he could continue to use the long putter without anchoring, if he wanted to. It’s not an equipment ban. It’s a ban on anchoring.

PGA on Thurs, saw Adam double the 4th hole by 3-putting from 3-feet twice, and his Major was done. TV Finch even comment on it. Scott aimpoint’ed and stabbed his rake putter at all three putts. For goodness sake, get a putter that gives Confidence over the ball knowing the exact line for the speed you like to hole putts. P&SI-EGOS is the answer.

The only reason why guys like Jordan Speith and Jason Day had monster years is because their putting was ridiculous… All these guys can stripe it, the big questions is can they putt?
What happened to guys like Lucas Glover? Ricky Barnes? Kyle Stanley? Chez Reavie? Geoff Ogilvy? Jhonathan Vegas?
PUTTING!

For most these guys it whether they have a short game/put or not. And for some its driving accuracy. Look at Rickie Fowler, he figured out his putter and now is one the highlight players to watch. But you have players like Adam Scott, Gary Woodland, Dustin Johnson, Boo Weakly, Kaymer ect; who no clue how to make putts/short game week after week and fall away. The guys I just mentioned also some the best ball strikers in the world
Stretch
Oct 6, 2015 at 12:03 pm
Great ball strikers have a hard time becoming good putters due to the proximity to the hole is longer than lesser ball strikers who chip and pitch a lot. Paul Runyon taking out Sam Snead is a classic example.
Poor putters have one thing in common. They don’t line up on the line they want the ball to start on. This starts an endless cycle of stabs, yanks and yips that can end a career.
YB is also correct in players starting to spray the ball and poor alignment is the root as it is with putting.

Strokes gained putting has nothing to do with the total number of putts due to hitting more greens. It makes no sense to say the guys who dont hit greens are better putters because they chip more. Putting stats for pros are not number of putts per round, it is strokes gained putting.

“Lucas Glover? Ricky Barnes? Kyle Stanley? Chez Reavie? Geoff Ogilvy? Jhonathan Vegas?”
Actually their total game went astray, beginning with their long ball that would’t go straight. They can all hit it far, but all these guys started spraying it and couldn’t figure out why.

Take a look for yourself.

Lucas is ranked 10th in GIR %, 11th in Total Driving and 6th in Ball Striking… Strokes Gained Putting? 184th…..
