Teacher to compete against student at PGA Championship

Published

on

Charles Frost, the Head Professional at Kiawah Island Club’s River Course, qualified for the PGA Championship — and he’ll be competing against his star pupil, Ben Martin.

The PGA Championship is unique from the other three majors in that it gives club professionals a real chance to qualify and compete. One of the ways to qualify for the PGA Championship is to finish in the top 20 in the yearly Professional National Championship, an event for club pros and teachers who are members of the Professional Golfers Association (PGA) of America.

This year the PNC was held at Philadelphia Cricket Club, where Frost finished T10 and locked in a spot in the field at Whistling Straits.

While this is Frost’s first major championship, the 39-year-old is no stranger to high-level competition. He recently finished second at the 2015 Carolinas PGA Section Professional Championship, and played on several professional tours earlier in his golfing career. He’s won the South Carolina Open, North Carolina Open and Carolinas PGA Assistant’s Championship.

The season’s fourth major also takes the top-70 players on the PGA Championship Points list, which is how Martin, Frost’s student, qualified.

The 27-year-old former Clemson All-American already has a PGA Tour victory under his belt, as well two wins on the Web.com Tour. His best finish in a major is T26 at the 2014 Open Championship.

When Frost steps on the range at Whistling Straits to help Martin prepare for the PGA Championship, he’ll be carrying a bucket of range balls for himself.

He played on the Hawaii Pacific University Men's Golf team and earned a Masters degree in Communications. He also played college golf at Rutgers University, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism.
