Should Jordan Spieth have his own logo?

Published

on

According a report from ESPN’s Darren Rovell, Under Armour has filed for trademarks on a Jordan Spieth logo.

See the logo below: two J’s with an “S” visible in the space between the black lettering.

U.S. Patent & Trademark Office Filing

Spieth, who won both The Masters and U.S. Open in 2015, signed an endorsement deal with Under Armour in 2013. He extended his deal through 2025 with the company in January, and according to the report, he will receive royalties from sales on his logoed gear, which is expected to be released next year.

Of course, this new trademark filing raises the question: Does 22-year old Jordan Spieth deserve his own logo?

First, let’s look at some other golfers who have their own logo.

  • Jack Nicklaus — 18 majors
  • Tiger Woods — 14 majors
  • Gary Player — 9 majors
  • Arnold Palmer — 7 majors
  • Lee Trevino — 6 majors
  • Greg Norman — 2 majors
  • John Daly — 2 majors
  • Jordan Spieth — 2 majors
  • Adam Scott — 1 major
  • Justin Rose — 1 major
  • Keegan Bradley — 1 major
  • Sergio Garcia — 0 majors
  • Ian Poulter — 0 majors
  • Dustin Johnson — 0 majors
  • Hunter Mahan — 0 majors
  • Tommy “Two Gloves” Gainey — 0 majors

In the grand scheme of things, there’s not much of a correlation between having a personal logo and winning major championships. It’s more about brand development. The bigger question is whether the Jordan Spieth brand is worth separating from Under Armour’s current line of golf apparel, as Nike did with the Tiger Woods brand.

After nearly winning the third leg of a Grand Slam at the 2015 Open Championship, the answer seems to be “yes,” but it remains to be seen what the future holds for young Spieth.

Will he continue to be the face of a generation of golfers? Will consumers want to buy a shirt, or a hat, just because it has the “JS” logo on it?

Let’s put it to a vote.

Should Jordan Spieth have his own logo?

That is not a “J” “S” logo… that is a “L” “S” logo… What the heck were they thinking… totally does not make me think “jordan speith”

Not that it is worth mentioning, but Kevin Na has (on had at one point) a logo, too. Jack, Arnie, Gary, Norman and even (cringe) Daly have creative logos with the AP Umbrella and the Golden Bear being excellent brands themselves. Tiger’s logo is great as well. Like him or not, he moves the needle still and his logo is original, attractive and easy to distinguish. A lot of the other guys who leverage their initials to create a logo are simply trying to hard.

Looks too much like the Scratch Golf logo.

Yes he does need a logo. It should be a picture of Dustin Johnson handing Jordan Speith a Major Championship trophy.

Way to close to the FootJoy logo.

That Under Armor logo is so ugly and so obscure looks like it was taken directly from the opening of an Ancient Aliens episode. In fact, for what it’s worth, I think that in episode 3, it was determined that symbol is actually the universal designation for 97% polyester and 3% spandex. . .

I’ve never understood players having their own logos– they’re human beings, not merchandise. Yes, I understand that it might help a company sell more of that player’s clubs, apparel etc. but that drives another question: Why would somebody want to look like and act like another person?! I think it’s strange seeing anybody but Tiger Woods wearing Tiger Woods clothing and having the TW logo on their clubs. Same goes for Jordan Speith, or any other athlete for that matter.

I don’t think you are really a “pro golfer” or else you wouldn’t have such an ill informed decision. Each professional golfer is a business unto themselves. And yes they should have a logo and branding. Same as the local real estate agent or auto detailer. Except these guys are in the national spotlight.

        Aug 9, 2015 at 2:53 am

Brian, I am indeed a professional golfer, which is why I chimed in with my opinion on other professional golfers. At the end of the day, I play golf for a living but I’m just a human being. I’ve met and talked to Jordan Spieth, and he’s a normal human being (aside from his obsession with the University of Texas). I’ve also met and talked to Tiger, and he’s a normal human being.

I never made a “decision.” I simply said I find it strange to make a human being a brand.

I don’t think he should….I don’t think UA has any athletes that have a logo yet (could be wrong, maybe Curry does…) but I like that their athletes don’t have logos. PLUS, many of the logos out there aren’t that cool looking, looks like they just went to Word and picked a font they liked, then put their initials smashed together and voila….a logo.

I do not like that purple shirt in the picture but Jordan had a nice royal blue/aqua striped one today at Firestone. I would not spend the money but Jordan’s UA shirts are usually pretty nice designs. Zach’s Oakley today was not bad either.

How is this related to whether Spieth should have a logo?

      • Pat M

        Aug 7, 2015 at 12:17 pm

Well I think he should just stick to UA logo. UA is destroying the competition especially the company that sells the TW stuff. UA has better shoes and clothes. My mate works in the golf apparel industry and UA is growing rapidly as is Puma.

Jordan should stick with the UA logo.

I think the word, “deserve” is a strong way of putting it. Everyone and anyone should be free to do what they please in this capacity. He will be marketing his name and making himself and Under Armour a lot of money. I hope that Jordan and UA do something positive with some of the proceeds they both will be making to help the less fortunate.

Who the h… are we to judge whether he “deserves” it or not?…

lol. I just wrote a comment at another website, before I had even seen this, suggesting sarcastically that there oughta be a law, that you need a minimum of four major championships to be allowed to have your own logo.

Ian J. Poulter has his own logo.

    Luke Donald has a logo.

    Lee Westwood has a logo.

I think any junior golfer gets a free personalized logo the moment he signs a management contract with Chubby Chandler.

In the current world, Jordan is “logo worthy” … I’d just prefer a world where people didn’t do that. Seems a bit too egotistical to me ….

He is becoming a ‘Brand,’ why not solidify it, capitalize on it?

    • Flow

      Aug 7, 2015 at 9:08 am

@Ken you are absolutely correct! Any one on this website or any other website who states differently is 1) an idiot 2) has no business acumen and 3) jealous they don’t have the “brand awareness” to do that for them selves. In this day and age you, especially in sports, you take every advantage you can to make as much as you can because you never know what happens tomorrow. And by the way I would buy his shirt with his logo over any other athlete today based on the individual he is!! Class act athlete who I hope dominates for years to come!! GO Jordan and UA!!!

Love your logo! Is that you sitting on top of an alligator? What’s that in your hand? Oh! You mean that’s really a crocodile? Kind of looks like a horse from this angle. . . Gee. . . Who knew? Does it really matter? Who cares?

Logos that are just stylized initials are lame, ie. TW, as, sg, JR, hm, KB.

Bears, umbrellas, sharks, knights are cool.

Just got don teaching a junior camp – 70% of kids had under armor shirts and puma hats….and high socks….I don’t get the high socks.

    • Pat M

      Aug 6, 2015 at 9:39 pm

High socks can work for avoiding sunburn, mosquito or no seeum bites on the ankles. This summer has been brutal for mosquitoes in some areas and I am appreciating higher socks again versus ankle socks.

It might not be a bad idea. My friend works in the golf apparel business and he said that Under Armour is doing great business because of Jordan. He said that UA and Puma with Ricky is what is hot now. he said it is especially true with younger players. He also said UA and Puma are taking it out of the swooshes hide. The younger players view Tiger as an old journeyman golfer who misses cuts and Rory is just too erratic. The younger players like Jordan and Ricky the most.

    • timbleking

      Aug 7, 2015 at 7:33 am

Erratic? I’d like to be so erratic that at 26 years of age I would have 18 wins, among those were 4 Majors and 2 WGC, after 8 years as a pro…

      • Dr Troy

        Aug 7, 2015 at 7:51 am

LOL. Well said…If erratic would get us all half that, where do I sign?

I worry Rory will become the George Best of golf. He makes some bad decisions.

What GolfWRXers are saying about Kevin Kisner’s new Callaway X Forged CB irons

Published

on

In our forums, our members have been discussing Kevin Kisner’s new Callaway X Forged CB irons which he has in the bag at this week’s CJ Cup. WRXers have been commenting on the switch and the clubs themselves in our forums.

For lots more photos, check out the full thread here.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • btyh: “Holy offset.”
  • Glf_LU: “These are interesting. Not going to make a rush to judgement until I see them in person. It does look like a little more offset than I would expect to see in this model.”
  • bcflyguy1: “Kisner is not one to make a lot of equipment changes (see the GBB driver he’s still using), so if these do have staying power in his bag that will be interesting to see. I have to wonder if there’s something different about his set, because like others have mentioned there appears to be more offset on his than I recall seeing in the samples I’ve had in hand.”

WATCH: PGA Tour players play hole blindfolded and it’s hilarious/amazing

Published

on

As part of a Srixon campaign, four PGA Tour players recently participated in a three-hole challenge, with each hole being a different game; hole No. 1 was blindfolded, hole No. 2 was costumes and distractions, and hole No. 3 was alternate shot with a baseball bat. The teams were Smylie Kaufman and Sam Ryder against Shane Lowry and Grayson Murray.

Watch the full video below, since it is quite entertaining (albeit not the type of golf that Old Tom Morris surely had in mind), but in particular, make sure to check out the first hole where Lowry and Ryder play a full hole completely blind folded. It’s amazing to watch how badly Ryder struggles, and how Lowry nearly makes par.

Cleveland-Srixon’s marketing department has been hard at work crafting these viral-esque ad campaigns; if you remember, former long-drive champion Jamie Sadlowski recently dressed as 80-year-old Grandpa Jamie to fool range-goers. That video has since gathered over 1.2 million views on YouTube.
