Fan carries bag after Allenby fires caddie mid-round

Robert Allenby — who kicked off his 2015 season by getting robbed and mugged in Hawaii after the Sony Open — reportedly fired his caddie after nine holes of the RBC Canadian Open on Thursday.

And just like when David Simms fired Roy McAvoy in the movie Tin Cup, Allenby brought a fan inside the ropes to carry his bag the remainder of the round.

On hole No. 13 in round one (his fourth hole of the day) of the Canadian Open, Allenby wanted to hit a 7-iron from 150 yards, but caddie Mick Middlemo insisted he hit an 8-iron. Allenby went with the 8-iron, and the ball came up short in a creek leading to a triple bogey.

Here’s what happened next in Allenby’s words, according to Score Golf.

[quote_box_center]“I said to him, ‘You know this happens every week. This has happened for like the last three or four or five months. We keep making bad mistakes and you’re not helping me in these circumstances,’” Allenby said. “And he just lost the plot at me. He just told me I could go eff myself. And I said, ‘Look, you need to slow down. I mean just calm down.’

“And then he just got right in my face as if he wanted to just beat me up. I said, ‘Stop being a such and such and calm down and get back into the game.’ And he just got even closer and closer and I just said, ‘That’s it, you’re sacked.’

“I said, ‘I will never have you caddie ever again.’ And we never spoke for the rest of the (first nine) and when we got to 18 we walked off and he said some smarta** remark to me and I said, ‘You don’t deserve to be caddying out there.’ And he just got right in my face and threatened me so I said, ‘Go.’ So he left.”[/quote_box_center]

Tom Fraser, a school principal from Ontario, volunteered to carry his clubs, so Allenby let him inside the ropes. He birdied the first hole with Fraser on the bag, but cooled off making bogeys on hole Nos. 4 through 7 en route to an 81 — good enough to be tied for last after the first round.

The report says Allenby plans to withdraw from the event, and Allenby says he’s still recovering emotionally from the incident in Hawaii.

[quote_box_center]“My nerves have been rattled. I’m in shock,” Allenby said. “Everything that’s gone on this year, that was the last thing I needed. I’ve been obviously beaten up, robbed and stolen from, what have you in Hawaii and all that. I haven’t dealt with it well all year, it’s been tough, and then I got something like this. He’s meant to be one of my mates. I’ve done a lot of right things by him and helped him out financially and he just turns around and does this to me.”[/quote_box_center]

——–

Middlemo’s side of the story sounds a little different than Allenby’s, according to GolfLink. His caddie says Allenby called him a derogatory word three times, and told him not to say it again. Things escalated from there.

[quote_center]”I was never going to hit the guy, I’m too professional for that. But what I was going to do if he said it again was drop the bag right down, take the bib off and just walk in from there. So then he starts with the ‘calm down, calm down’ stuff.

“I told him ‘don’t bully me.’ So then he goes on saying can’t you take a joke? you’re so un-Australian,’ and then while we were on the 13th green I heard him saying, ‘I don’t know why I put up with this fat c***’…”[/quote_center]

Middlemo continued:

[quote_box_center]

“Then he stands on the back of 18 and says `I’m going to get a caddie banned for life on this tour today. I’m going to enjoy myself and a caddie is going to get banned for life with what happened out there today.’

“I turned to him and said: ‘Are you talking to me?’ He said ‘Yes you’re going to get banned for life today you fat c***.

“Simon Clark (a fellow caddie) was there and heard everything. I walked away, stood the bag up, put my bib on it, took everything of mine out of the bag and turned to him and said, `I’m done, I’m finished.’

“He yelled a few obscenities and things and I just said `That’s fine mate, but make sure if you see me off the course you say the same things’. Not a threat, just to make sure. So him needing to get escorted out by police what a joke, I’m 50 years old.”

[/quote_box_center]

——–

Fellow caddie Simon Clarke then spoke to stuff.co.nz to give a witness account of his side of the story.

[quote_box_center]

“I wouldn’t be talking about it if he [Allenby] didn’t tell the media afterwards a whole lot of porky pies,”Clarke said. “I’ve known Rob for a long time and I’ve known Mick for a long time. It’s disappointing that at age 42, or however old he [Allenby] is, he’s still treating people that way and how many good caddies he’s gone through.

“It’s sad that he speaks to the guys this way and doesn’t wait until after the round. It’s disappointing that he’s up to his old tricks.”

[/quote_box_center]

Clarke also said that Allenby called Middlemo an “overweight so-and-so.”

[quote_box_center]”Mick took exception to that,” Clarke said. “He got fired up. Mick demanded [Allenby] call him that again. Adrenalin and all, it wasn’t pretty. Robert didn’t call him that anymore because I don’t think that he was sure what was going to happen.”[/quote_box_center]

Walking off the 18th hole (the group’s 9th hole), Clarke saw Middlemo take off his bib and yell at Allenby:

“It was clear as day, ‘try talking to me like that off the golf course’,” Clarke said.

——-

Allenby’s now former caddie Middlemo said he doesn’t believe the “porky pies” Allenby told the media about his incident in Hawaii.

[quote_box_center]

“Do I think he got mugged and bashed and absolutely robbed? No I don’t,” Middlemo told News Corp Australia.

“That’s the story I told because that’s the story he told me to tell because I wasn’t there.”

“Do I think he fell over and cracked his head? Honestly I do… I think he fell over and someone picked up his wallet and had a great time with his credit card.”

[/quote_box_center]

——-

Allenby’s friend Anthony Puntoriero, who was with Allenby the night of the incident in Hawaii, came to his defense, according to a report from the Courier Mail.

[quote_box_center]

“It’s a disgrace that everybody is taking as gospel the words of a man who had left the bar at least an hour before Robert was assaulted so the fact he has anything to say about it is unbelievable,” Puntoriero said.

“I was there until a minute before he was taken and I was there the minute he got back to the hotel. The pure fact is there is a full police report, there has been an arrest and someone is in jail for what took place that night.

“I am livid because Mick was with us the next day looking at CCTV footage of how Robert left the place, he has seen it all, and yet he makes the claim he did. He is offering opinion like it is fact, which it clearly is not.

“I was with Robert for two days afterwards with police going through photos and videos of suspects and the rest of it and it was a traumatic experience.”

Is Bradley Hughes still coaching Allenby?

Allenby won’t listen to ‘twomasters’ Bradley Hughes. He won’t listen to me either!

Allenby has a screw loose, no doubt. And a short fuse.
I witnessed first hand his attitude at the 2011 Presidents cup toward Ogilvy. And Geoff was his playing partner!

Wow you really screwed up the Tin Cup reference here. McAvoy fired Romeo. Simms not a part of that scene.

      Michigan Mike,

Romeo quit… he didn’t get fired. Don’t you remember the scene where Simms tells Roy, “If you hit this shot, you’re fired?”

The only thing I took out of this article is that Allenby can’t hit his 8 iron 150 yards.

C’mon Man, don’t you know this kind of stuff will make it to WRX?

An 8 iron from 150 is WAY overkill, and if he had a WRX caddie, he’d be hitting a 3/4 Gap wedge from 150.

Exactly. If I was the caddie I would have suggested that Allenby join the LPGA tour.

Yeah obviously I wasn’t there and don’t know the whole story but I’ve seen Allenby in person at a couple of events and he’s always come accross as a D–K!!!!

You would think Allenby might have a clue and try to emulate Adam Scott who is one of the nicest players on the tour.

I would like to see the caddies boycott Allenby make him carry his own bag and get his own yardage. The tour should ban him for a while maybe that will make him think twice before using fowl language in the crowd and children.

  9. Confused....but I think it comes with the territory

    Jul 24, 2015 at 9:33 am

If Allenby was making top ten finishes every week would he have just walked off then? Of course there is frustration in golf, but talking to someone in that manner is unacceptable in the workplace, but there are probably other issues we haven’t or never will hear about, but could have been handled better on both sides. I don’t know how far I would let it go personally, but I would also never take a job as a tour caddie for granted over a player’s frustration. I would hope going into a tour players world for 5 days out of the week you know what you signed up for, and when things are going good and your getting a fat check, rather than fat c___ you could see through all of that, but you should also realize you pretty much signed up to be a mental punching bag when things aren’t going so good. In one ear out the other, followed by a conversation after the round would probably smoothed out the situation, and still get paid to have a job most would love to have.

yep reading the caddies story I can see why he walked away. No wonder Allenby got beaten up in Hawai – no one can take such BS for long.

This guy has a screw loose. I think he was offering people $10,000 a day to go out on his boat and go fishing.

What GolfWRXers are saying about Kevin Kisner’s new Callaway X Forged CB irons

Published

on

In our forums, our members have been discussing Kevin Kisner’s new Callaway X Forged CB irons which he has in the bag at this week’s CJ Cup. WRXers have been commenting on the switch and the clubs themselves in our forums.

For lots more photos, check out the full thread here.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • btyh: “Holy offset.”
  • Glf_LU: “These are interesting. Not going to make a rush to judgement until I see them in person. It does look like a little more offset than I would expect to see in this model.”
  • bcflyguy1: “Kisner is not one to make a lot of equipment changes (see the GBB driver he’s still using), so if these do have staying power in his bag that will be interesting to see. I have to wonder if there’s something different about his set, because like others have mentioned there appears to be more offset on his than I recall seeing in the samples I’ve had in hand.”

WATCH: PGA Tour players play hole blindfolded and it’s hilarious/amazing

Published

on

As part of a Srixon campaign, four PGA Tour players recently participated in a three-hole challenge, with each hole being a different game; hole No. 1 was blindfolded, hole No. 2 was costumes and distractions, and hole No. 3 was alternate shot with a baseball bat. The teams were Smylie Kaufman and Sam Ryder against Shane Lowry and Grayson Murray.

Watch the full video below, since it is quite entertaining (albeit not the type of golf that Old Tom Morris surely had in mind), but in particular, make sure to check out the first hole where Lowry and Ryder play a full hole completely blind folded. It’s amazing to watch how badly Ryder struggles, and how Lowry nearly makes par.

Cleveland-Srixon’s marketing department has been hard at work crafting these viral-esque ad campaigns; if you remember, former long-drive champion Jamie Sadlowski recently dressed as 80-year-old Grandpa Jamie to fool range-goers. That video has since gathered over 1.2 million views on YouTube.
