Amateur star Schniederjans turns pro, signs with Callaway and Excel

Published

on

Top-ranked amateur golfer Ollie Schniederjans will make his professional debut this week at the RBC Canadian Open, where we spotted him with a new staff bag from Callaway Golf. According to a company representative, Schniederjans will be announced as Callaway’s newest Tour Staff member next week. He has also signed with Excel Sports Management, the same company that manages PGA Tour stars Tiger Woods and Matt Kuchar.

Schniederjans made the cut in both the 2015 U.S. Open (T42) and last week’s Open Championship (T12), becoming only the third amateur to accomplish the feat since 1960. He’s been long touted for his potential PGA Tour star power, and claimed six individual NCAA tournament victories while at Georgia Tech. He was also awarded the 2014 Mark H. McCormack Medal as the No. 1-ranked amateur golfer in the world, a position he held for 41 weeks.

Schniederjans graduated from Georgia Tech in 2015, and was a two-time ACC Player of the Year, a three-time All American, and played for the U.S. in the 2014 and 2015 Palmer Cups.

Look for him to play several more PGA Tour events in the coming months.

I obviously have no idea what the Schneiderjans family financial situation is…im just going to stereotype and assume its solid. I say this because when a young kid who is coming from a low income family/bad neighborhood/ etc…takes a big contract or takes on a new sponsor etc in psorts (basketball, football)…it totally makes sense to me.

In the case of most kids who are becoming pro golfers, its safe to say that while the additional endorsements would be nice, its not the main objective…its to become successful on tour. In Ollies case, he is so good that he can legitimately be one of the better players in the world.

So…to get to my point, if this kid obviously loved Titleist equipment and had TONS of success with it…to the point that he is already putting himself in position to win major championships, why change?

I have no idea what the Cally contract is compared to what Titleist offered, but is that extra $XYZ worth playing equipment that you are not used to that you have had no success with?

And he’s a fascinating study in club fitting, all his irons are the same length, all his woods the same length.

I’m pretty sure that was bryson dechambeau from SMU who was also in the U.S. open this year. Unless they both set their clubs up that way, which they might. Just don’t remember hearing schniederjans setting his clubs up that way.

Played Titleist like most good amateurs before they need to put food on their table. WITB is here http://www.golfwrx.com/forums/topic/1147673-ollie-schniederjans-witb-shot-at-the-2015-valspar-championship/

That’s some what true, more true 15-20 years ago. But all the top OEM’s make really good equipment these days and can make this fellow pretty much whatever he wants. Plus pay him a lot to use it.

not dissing Callaway. They have great equipment and best players in the world. However I would say that Callaway is not the first choice for young guns. Most great names have played Titleist in their early days – Phil, Tiger, Rory, Sergio, … – then over time obviously got new $$$ deals
