Tiger Woods Cut Watch: Live updates from The Open

Published

on

Updated 2:30 p.m.

Tiger Woods began the 2015 Open Championship at St. Andrews — a venue where he’s won two Claret Jugs — with a 4-over par 76.

Benign conditions greeted the players on Thursday at the Old Course, and the leaderboard was filled with low scores; most notably Dustin Johnson at 7-under par and Jordan Spieth at 5-under. With 63 players under par after Round 1, Tiger will be climbing uphill to make the 36-hole cut.

Follow along as we provide highlights, lowlights and updates from Tiger’s second round.

What happened on Thursday?

It was a head-scratching start for Woods, who buried his approach shot in the burn on No. 1 on his way to an opening hole bogey.

Things didn’t improve. He made three more bogeys on the outward nine, and shot even-par coming home with a lone birdie on No. 14.

His first-day 76 was his highest opening round in four Opens at St. Andrews.

Live from Round 2

Hole 1: Tiger started with a squirrelly shot to the right side of the fairway, but hit his approach to 25 feet and made a six-footer to salvage par.

Hole 2: His tee shot swerved way right into the rough, and his approach dead left into a green side bunker, but made a fantastic up-and-down to save yet another par.

Hole 3: Another par; two-putt from just off the putting surface.

Hole 4: Tiger gets off the par-train with a three-putt from about 60 feet. He sits at 5-over for the championship, T132.

Holes 5 and 6: After failing to make birdie on the par-5 fifth despite a drive in the fairway, Tiger made a two-putt bogey on No. 6 following a wayward drive into a gorse bush on the right. He’s now 16 shots back of leader Dustin Johnson, and sits T140.

Holes 7-9: All pars. It’s rainy, cold and getting dark. Each hole that passes without a birdie for Woods means one hole closer to a missed cut.

Hole 10: Tiger stuffs his approach and makes his first birdie of the day. He’s still five-shots back of the projected cut-line (even-par).

Hole 11: Two-putt par from 35 feet. This may be his last hole for the day due to darkness.

Although play isn’t officially suspended (darkness), it appears that Tiger elected to call it quits for the day before finishing the 12th hole.

He made it to the weekend, but will need a slew of birdies on holes 12-18 on Saturday to earn a tee-time for Round 3. He currently sits 5-strokes out of the even-par projected cut line, and 15 shots back of leader Dustin Johnson (10-under).

Round 2, cont’d on Saturday

Hole 12: A par to start the day. The wind is howling, but he needs to string together a bunch of birdies coming home to have a shot.

Holes 13: Bogey, and any hopes of making the cut are slashed. It took about 10 hours to finish the hole because of a wind delay, but finding a pot bunker off the tee had already sealed his fate.

Holes 14 and 15: Two bogeys. Just trying to get through the round and get out of here.

Holes 16-18: Tiger birdied the 16th, made a slick up-and-down par from the Road Hole Bunker to save par at 17, and nearly drove the green at 18, but failed to capitalize and finished with a par.

A 75 on Saturday leaves him 7-over for the Open, sitting in T147 and well-removed from the even-par cutline. Many thought St. Andrews would be the venue where Tiger would find his game and some major-championship magic. That was not the case.

There are so many credible, newsworthy golf stories out there. Why publish this. I do not understand why golf media persists in focusing on the past when there are so many fresh young players (both amateur and professional) coming on strong. This new crop of players can flat play, and the lion’s share of them seem to be gentlemen that are respectful of the game. Please, let’s move on from Tiger.

After this weekend he will be about 260th to 270th in the world or so. Could he make it on the web.com tour now? Hooters Tour? These young guys can play.

What GolfWRXers are saying about Kevin Kisner’s new Callaway X Forged CB irons

Published

on

In our forums, our members have been discussing Kevin Kisner’s new Callaway X Forged CB irons which he has in the bag at this week’s CJ Cup. WRXers have been commenting on the switch and the clubs themselves in our forums.

For lots more photos, check out the full thread here.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • btyh: “Holy offset.”
  • Glf_LU: “These are interesting. Not going to make a rush to judgement until I see them in person. It does look like a little more offset than I would expect to see in this model.”
  • bcflyguy1: “Kisner is not one to make a lot of equipment changes (see the GBB driver he’s still using), so if these do have staying power in his bag that will be interesting to see. I have to wonder if there’s something different about his set, because like others have mentioned there appears to be more offset on his than I recall seeing in the samples I’ve had in hand.”

WATCH: PGA Tour players play hole blindfolded and it’s hilarious/amazing

Published

on

As part of a Srixon campaign, four PGA Tour players recently participated in a three-hole challenge, with each hole being a different game; hole No. 1 was blindfolded, hole No. 2 was costumes and distractions, and hole No. 3 was alternate shot with a baseball bat. The teams were Smylie Kaufman and Sam Ryder against Shane Lowry and Grayson Murray.

Watch the full video below, since it is quite entertaining (albeit not the type of golf that Old Tom Morris surely had in mind), but in particular, make sure to check out the first hole where Lowry and Ryder play a full hole completely blind folded. It’s amazing to watch how badly Ryder struggles, and how Lowry nearly makes par.

Cleveland-Srixon’s marketing department has been hard at work crafting these viral-esque ad campaigns; if you remember, former long-drive champion Jamie Sadlowski recently dressed as 80-year-old Grandpa Jamie to fool range-goers. That video has since gathered over 1.2 million views on YouTube.
