Rory McIlroy ruptures ankle ligament in pick-up soccer game
Behold, the horror.
Rory McIlroy posted the above to his Instagram account on Monday morning. Apparently, the world No. 1 golfer suffered a “total rupture of an ankle ligament and the joint capsule from kicking around a soccer ball with friends in his native Northern Ireland.”
According to PGATour.com: “A spokeswoman for McIlroy’s management company told CNN there is a ’10 percent chance’ of the 26-year-old playing The Open Championship.”
How could a right-handed golfer return from a ruptured ligament in the critical left ankle in under two weeks? And even if he were able to hobble around St. Andrews to defend his title, what are the odds of playing even moderately well?
Get well, Rors.

What GolfWRXers are saying about Kevin Kisner’s new Callaway X Forged CB irons
In our forums, our members have been discussing Kevin Kisner’s new Callaway X Forged CB irons which he has in the bag at this week’s CJ Cup. WRXers have been commenting on the switch and the clubs themselves in our forums.
For lots more photos, check out the full thread here.
Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- btyh: “Holy offset.”
- Glf_LU: “These are interesting. Not going to make a rush to judgement until I see them in person. It does look like a little more offset than I would expect to see in this model.”
- bcflyguy1: “Kisner is not one to make a lot of equipment changes (see the GBB driver he’s still using), so if these do have staying power in his bag that will be interesting to see. I have to wonder if there’s something different about his set, because like others have mentioned there appears to be more offset on his than I recall seeing in the samples I’ve had in hand.”

WATCH: PGA Tour players play hole blindfolded and it’s hilarious/amazing
As part of a Srixon campaign, four PGA Tour players recently participated in a three-hole challenge, with each hole being a different game; hole No. 1 was blindfolded, hole No. 2 was costumes and distractions, and hole No. 3 was alternate shot with a baseball bat. The teams were Smylie Kaufman and Sam Ryder against Shane Lowry and Grayson Murray.
Watch the full video below, since it is quite entertaining (albeit not the type of golf that Old Tom Morris surely had in mind), but in particular, make sure to check out the first hole where Lowry and Ryder play a full hole completely blind folded. It’s amazing to watch how badly Ryder struggles, and how Lowry nearly makes par.
What happens when 4 #PGATOUR pros take a day off?
Luckily, the cameras were rolling.

Cleveland-Srixon’s marketing department has been hard at work crafting these viral-esque ad campaigns; if you remember, former long-drive champion Jamie Sadlowski recently dressed as 80-year-old Grandpa Jamie to fool range-goers. That video has since gathered over 1.2 million views on YouTube.

I feel bad for Rors but don’t blame him for playing soccer. We all have our outlets, and I bet the benefits gained from playing other sports (strength, power, stamina, balance, etc.,) have helped his career in golf more than they have harmed it. As an ATC, the picture or Rory in the walking boot and crutches is not a good sign. The boot will keep his ankle immobilized to allow the ligament to heal but it will also cause atrophy of the lower leg muscles. Rehab is going to take time and I’m sure he is in very capable hands. No question he is going to miss the Open and I would be the least bit surprised if he misses the PGA next month.

I wonder if he could play with that boot on his leg. Or would he be accused of “building a stance” and penalized?

I remember Luc Longley from Chicago Bulls doing his shoulder body surfing during the season and Michael Jordan just absolutely losing his sh*t at him about it.

And another thing. Hey Mr. Knight, can you send Rorz a pair ‘o Nike shorts for his next couch photo op! The towel is a tad disturbing. I thought this was a family site!

Yeah that is really messed up. My friend was a big Tiger then Rory guy. Now he is all Jordan Spieth. Sold all the Nike clothes and spent a bundle on new Under Armor stuff. Seems like Jordan is a better player and has more common sense. Rory may end up like Georgie Best.

Sheesh!! Love how this story is covered from 27 different angles, umpteen news and cable outlets launching this report and that, photos provided, analysis, free opinions, expert diagnosis, potential outcomes, etc., and we can’t get the same black belt coverage on the Micks gambling escapades!! So obvious is the selective reporting. Lol! So funny to me. Propaganda is somethin’ else I tell ya. We gotta protect the Mick, he’s such a great guy! Where’s my Pepto?

what an idiotic idea to play football as a professional athlete. on the other hand, if spieth wins the open, it will not count, because rory would have won, had he been fit.

Do we not count Padraig Harrington’s 2 majors in 2008 because Tiger wasn’t in the field? That’s ridiculous.
Jake Anderson
Jul 8, 2015 at 4:15 am
no, we definitely count Harrington’s 2 majors, because he showed he can beat woods, when he was playing good golf. how would you not?

Great player but not very bright. Nike, Santander etc must be livid. A St. Andrew’s Open and he gets himself injured.

If it’s a total rupture there is a 0% chance he will make the Open.
In fact, my wife(an M.D.) said he will be lucky to finish the season….this injury requires one of two options:
Surgery or time…lots of time….
So if Rory is conveying the actual injury correctly then expect to hear a surgery announcement within a week or that his injury was not in fact a total rupture.

Totally agree here…IF it’s a true “rupture”, you’re talking about no more golf for Mr. McIlroy this year. Period.
Derek
Jul 7, 2015 at 2:11 am
“Ruptured ATFL” is still pretty vague. The ATFL is really nothing more than a thickening of the tibio-talar capsule. “Complete rupture” of the ATFL occurs 65% of acute ankle sprains. If the CFL is not involved, The recovery ranges from 4-12 weeks, but a pro athlete in his 20s with access to the best care and rehab could realistically be back in month. People play sports without ATFLs and some people are totally functional with a congenital absence of the ligament.
The Open? Not a chance. But to say he is out for the year is a little premature.

athletes always come back faster than us normal folks….he will have the best trainers, PT program and will be rehabbing that thing to death to get ready for the Open in 2 weeks. I wish this happened 2 weeks ago instead of now tho.

That’s unfortunate- But hey, it happens. Last time I missed a tournament I was playing indoor soccer and cracked two ribs. Soccer is a rough sport dang it! That aside, as much as I like Rory and what he means to golf and the next generation of junior golfers, I’m still thrilled to see Spieth try and win the third leg of the ‘Slam. Golf still has plenty of heroes to watch and I’d rather see Rory get healthy than go re-injure and possibly irreparably damage his body. Get well Rors!

Let him do anything he wants. I am sure he didn’t expect this to happen and I’m sure he’ll learn something from this and remember this was another #1 who was into even more extreme sports like bungee jumping… His name Tiger Woods.

so i guess he shouldn’t have fun? Don’t do anything else but play golf Rory and never have any fun… honestly these things happen and just because your the number 1 player in the world doesn’t mean you don’t get to enjoy life.

I never said he shouldn’t have fun. I just said I imagine he’s kicking himself for kicking that soccer ball. S–t happens but I know he’ll hate missing the Open especially since it’s at the home of golf St. Andrews.
