Spotted: Ping iE1 irons
A new iron from Ping called the iE1 has been added to the USGA’s Conforming Club List in both right-handed and left-handed models.
Ping “i” irons were also spotted on the range at the Greenbrier Classic on Tuesday.

Are these irons the replacement for Ping’s i25 irons, or part of a new line? We’ll continue to update this story as more information becomes available.

In our forums, users are talking about top of bag setups that are non-traditional or thought-provoking in some way. Original poster @SuperSpurs106 inquired about other members who might use unorthodox set-ups to help with gapping issues or weak spots.

- phizzy30: “I had driver, 3 metal, 2/4 hybrid once upon a time as a higher ss player. 4 hybrid is gone and in place is a driving iron nowadays. I don’t think what you’re proposing is weird in anyway, however the yardage gap might be glaringly huge between driver and 2 hybrid. What is it about your 3 metal that has got you all messed up? You could always go 4 metal with shorter shaft and see if that works.”

In our forums, one user has gone searching for fellow users of a mini driver. In a post, @TightFade asked for other mini driver users to chime in with their weapon of choice, the reason for employing a mini, and what club follows it in the bag.

- ColdOkieGolf: “R7 15.5 turned down to 13.5 It replaces the 3w. I found it surprisingly easy to hit off the deck, and it’s very rare that I need or want to hit something beyond 250 from the fairway, so next club is my 7w.”
- ChaosTheory: “I’m sub-90 MPH with driver. But I’m able to hit DOD. I have been wanting something like the R7 15.5, so I just ordered one. I have a spot in the bag so nothing has to go. But I could see it replacing my trusty 4 wood, which I never use for approach shots. Just tee shots and lay ups. If I drop the 4 wood, I will turn my 7 wood down to ~20 degrees and will have good gaps. I recently tried a thriver build: 12 degree driver turned to 14, with a heavier 44 inch shaft and added head weight. I hit it great. Very accurate and not overly high, but the problem was that it sometimes went as far as a typical drive. And that’s not what I needed. So I will probably turn the 15.5 up to 16.5 or even 17.5. It’s all theoretical at this point. ?”

Unbelievable playability. Tremendous control in any type of shot I want to hit, extremely solid.
Love the look, better then my i-25’s! Hitting a little higher percentage of greens and that breeds more confidence. Thank You Ping!

Hit a fitting demo (7)today with the new Modus Pro105 shaft that will be offered as an option. They WILL be my next set. Most buttery cast heads I’ve ever felt and the shaft is wonderful. The pictures do no justice. they have a subtle beauty to them. They are thinner on top than the i25, with a little less and more blended offset. They aren’t 17-4 like the i25, g30… The guy at the LGS said they were 425, which is a carpenter steel. The undercut cavity makes a fast face, as I picked up 10+ on the monitor over both Srixons and Cobra flyZ pro. Could also be the shaft or a combo, but it felt great. Now to sell my Titleist AP2’s and Adams CB1’s…… This will be my first set of Pings ever.

I just got a set of the G30s which look a lot like the I25 and I think these are close to both of them. Straightest clubs I have ever hit. Talked a friend into buying the g30 instead of callcway or tm or titlist….second week out…hold in one, straight into the hole…

I bought my Ping i10s as soon as they were released. Minimal offset, small head, medium top line and foregiving. I loved them (3 – 7 handicap). I looked at updating them to the i20 and then i25 but just to much offset. Gave up and bought Mizuno JPX850 forged last year. Good clubs but the Ping iE1 look fantastic. I miss my Ping i10s. If you don’t tell my wife I’m in!

I loved my i5’s. not sure why I got rid of them. These really look good to me and I have always been happy with Ping quality and service. I’ll definitely give these a try when they come out.

I saw the 7 iron in person and it looks beautiful. Finish like the Glides and a deep cavity with weight port at the bottom of the slot. Topline is a bit thinner than i25 and a bit less offset. I play the i25s currently and can’t wait to get these in the bag. Should have access to a demo soon. Will keep you posted

Looks like Ping is giving in more to the fancy look so many of the OEMs are putting on their irons….Wish they would just update the Eye2 with modern Groves and shafts and be done with it…after all these years Ping Eye2s are still as game improvement as they come.

Yeah, I know a lot of players who simply will not hit a ball with a Ping iron because of the offset. I personally don’t mind a bit of offset, if only in the longer irons, but for me that basically means that the S55 is the only set for me, 5-PW.
Ping does so many things right with their irons; and they offer so many models. It’s weird how devoted Ping iron designers have been to lots of offset.

Clearly, they are responding to the market pressures for more distance out of their irons, even though they’ve never been about distance in their irons. If these replace the i25’s, looks like users will pick up a little extra ball speed with the forgiveness of a game improvement iron. Spin and lack of distance compared to it’s competitors have been the only knocks on the i25 (see the last golfwrx review). I trust Ping though. Typically, when they release a product it does what it says it’s going to do. This will probably be another quality release for them.

Looks like an under cut cavity design with a tungsten toe weight. Pretty standard today in the game improvement category. i25 irons fell in between GI and Player Cavity Back. I see this as the same. Comparable to the Nike Pro Combo long irons.

I think they look pretty nice, but I’m shocked at the lack of tech. An open cavity back? That’s it, or am I missing something. My Covert Forged 2.0’s might be safe.

I dont care for Ping metal woods(feel, sound) but I love their G25 irons. I am used to the “clicky” cast iron feel but would love to try a forged cavity back some day. These appear to be cast iron though but I’m not a metalologist(made up word I know).

I actually don’t find Ping irons to feel very clicky at all. Sure, maybe the G series have a bit more thump to them, but especially the S55 irons feel really soft. Without knowing what they were hitting, I’d wager that an average golfer couldn’t tell an S55 vs a forged iron.
