The historical significance of Jordan Spieth’s U.S. Open win

Published

on

When Dustin Johnson three-putted from 12 feet, costing himself a chance to win the 2015 U.S. Open, 21-year-old Jordan Spieth stumbled into a monumental victory — one that’s more historically significant than most golf fans probably realize.

With the 2015 U.S. Open win, Jordan Spieth becomes:

The youngest male golfer to win the U.S. Open since Bobby Jones in 1923.

Jones was 21 years, 3 months, 29 days old when he won the 1923 U.S. Open. Spieth was 21 years, 10 months, 26 days when he won on Sunday.

In 2011, Rory McIlroy won the U.S. Open at 22 years, 1 month, 16 days.

The youngest male golfer to win two majors since Gene Sarazen in 1922.

Gene Sarazen was 20 when he won the U.S. Open and the PGA Championship in 1922.

The youngest golfer ever to win the Masters and U.S. Open in the same year.

No one in golfing history won the Masters and the U.S. Open in the same year before 26, Tiger’s age when he accomplished the feat in 2002.

The sixth player of all-time to win the U.S. Open and the Masters in the same year.

He joins Woods (26), Arnold Palmer (30), Jack Nicklaus (32), Craig Wood (39) and Ben Hogan (twice, at 38 and 40) to accomplish this.

The first player since Bobby Jones in 1926 to make birdie on the 72nd hole to win the U.S. Open by one shot.

The wording of this historical feat sounds like Spieth hit a walk-off putt for birdie to win the U.S. Open, but we know that wasn’t the case. Chalk this one up to “it sounds better than it was.”

The second player in the Masters Era (since 1934) to win his second major in the major immediately following his first major victory. The first was Craig Wood in 1941.

I loved Chambers Bay. I believe another US Open should be held there again but, they need to improve all the greens and that is the only change I think it needs. It was fun to watch how the best in the world play when they are out of their comfort zone. It was one of the best Open’s I’ve watched in years IMHO. Congratulations to Jordan Spieth and the rest of the players who just went out and gave it their best without whining.

To you folks blaming Chambers Bay… Clean up your spilled milk and dry your tears. It was a legendary links setup that caused greats like Mickelson to wilt. Spieth won fair and square. Boo hoo…

I don’t think enough people talk about the amazing 3 wood approach shot that Jordan Spieth hit. Sure DJ missed the putt, but Jordan Spieth earned this US Open.

You mean the Driver, 3 wood? To DJ’s Driver, 6 iron to 12.x feet for his eagle putt?

I guess, at least DJ didn’t make floundering fish movements with his hands when the two footer missed by over an inch, given he couldn’t get a putt to sink on that back nine. Really a bummer for DJ. Good job by Spieth to keep firing. Lots of drama down that last stretch. Fun to watch!

talented guy and future will tell what significance all this had. Rory by these stats should have like 10 majors… and Tiger like 35

Tiger was lucky he had Steve Williams. Adam Scott understands that now. If Tiger had not had Stevie, I think he would have won 4 majors.

Lots of player criticize Chambers Bay set up, hey its real golf…just get on with it! if this guys is a pro, they should be playing good under whatever course situation and still able to win it! They should play in our course down here in the middle of Australian bush..hard pan fairway and very thick bush…enjoy!

Yes but many people did not “enjoy.” The Chambers Bay greens were a joke along with the set up. I have HD TV with a large screen. I could not see the ball on the cammo green. I turned the TV off and just watched the last 90 minutes.
Any club with greens like that would go out of business. The greenskeeper would be fired before the club closeds.

You’re the only person in the world with HD and a large screen? I have a 12′ perforated curved professional theater screen and studio quality projection system. I could see the ball fine. You’re right about clubs going out of business if they had greens like that. It’s well known you don’t give hackers like you super fast greens because they’d four or five putt nearly every hole.

If memory serves correct, Chambers Bay is a public course.

It WAS a “walkoff birdie” to win it. As I watched it, he was tied for the lead and hit two great shots to birdie the last and take the lead. Dustin Johnson NOT making birdie at the last does not mean Jordan’s birdie allowed him to stumble into the victory. Lots of guys did not birdie the 72nd hole of the US Open.

Its not a walkoff homer if you hit it in the top of the 9th and the other team fails to score in the bottom of the ninth.

Just like the home team can only hit a walk off homer, only golfers in the last group can card a w/o birdie

Good points Adam. I wasn’t able to watch all of the final round but I was surprised that DJ 3 putted 12 for par. Spieth birdied 12 with a 2 putt so you are right it was up and down and even Grace had a shot and had a Day or Ried played a little better they had chances. Some might be able to argue that Spieth got lucky but after a runaway masters performance he is simply amazing and really owns his game and shows up in big moments.

disgraceful set up. golf is the last sport to depend on lucky break or luck. those greens… hmm id ask refund is i played there. not even a public golf course has it this bad. shame on you USPGA

      Jun 23, 2015 at 10:11 pm

Anyone who did that course and greens at a club or even at a muni would be fired. The golf club would go out of business with those greens. As far as Jordan, he played great golf and shot the lowest score. He was the most consistent. The players were great. The course and greens were dreadful.

I understand the point of your first paragraph but Jordan Spieth did not “stumble” into victory. There were 72 holes played by each player with ups and downs, it wasn’t only because of a 3 putt that he won. Why not say he birdied 18 to win it? Or three putted 16 to give Dustin a chance?

Exactly, thank you for saying that! In the tournament I watched all weekend, Spieth played the best, most consistent golf all week and won.

What GolfWRXers are saying about Kevin Kisner’s new Callaway X Forged CB irons

Published

In our forums, our members have been discussing Kevin Kisner’s new Callaway X Forged CB irons which he has in the bag at this week’s CJ Cup. WRXers have been commenting on the switch and the clubs themselves in our forums.

For lots more photos, check out the full thread here.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • btyh: “Holy offset.”
  • Glf_LU: “These are interesting. Not going to make a rush to judgement until I see them in person. It does look like a little more offset than I would expect to see in this model.”
  • bcflyguy1: “Kisner is not one to make a lot of equipment changes (see the GBB driver he’s still using), so if these do have staying power in his bag that will be interesting to see. I have to wonder if there’s something different about his set, because like others have mentioned there appears to be more offset on his than I recall seeing in the samples I’ve had in hand.”

WATCH: PGA Tour players play hole blindfolded and it’s hilarious/amazing

Published

on

As part of a Srixon campaign, four PGA Tour players recently participated in a three-hole challenge, with each hole being a different game; hole No. 1 was blindfolded, hole No. 2 was costumes and distractions, and hole No. 3 was alternate shot with a baseball bat. The teams were Smylie Kaufman and Sam Ryder against Shane Lowry and Grayson Murray.

Watch the full video below, since it is quite entertaining (albeit not the type of golf that Old Tom Morris surely had in mind), but in particular, make sure to check out the first hole where Lowry and Ryder play a full hole completely blind folded. It’s amazing to watch how badly Ryder struggles, and how Lowry nearly makes par.

Cleveland-Srixon’s marketing department has been hard at work crafting these viral-esque ad campaigns; if you remember, former long-drive champion Jamie Sadlowski recently dressed as 80-year-old Grandpa Jamie to fool range-goers. That video has since gathered over 1.2 million views on YouTube.
