Chambers Bay already “on the edge?”

Published

on

Jason Day posted the photo below to Twitter at 12:05 p.m. PDT, Monday. Which is, like, 60 some hours before the start of the U.S. Open at Chambers Bay.

Screen Shot 2015-06-15 at 3.24.14 PM

“Unique greens!” the Aussie commented.

“Browns” may be the more optimal term.

As Yahoo’s Ryan Ballengee tweeted: “Sounds like this could get very ugly. Chambers is “on the edge” on Monday. Monday. At a place already boasting odd bounces.”

And Golf Channel’s Ryan Burr tweeted the photo below, wondering aloud how notoriously finicky pros accustomed to manicured expanses of green will take to them.

Screen Shot 2015-06-15 at 3.31.36 PM

And in a piece in USA Today’s For the Win subtly titled “U.S. Open greens already look like a total disaster,” Luke Kerr-Dineen wrote:

“Tournament officials always try to make the course as hard as possible by growing out the rough and baking the greens, which almost always produces a fascinating contest. But sometimes…they push the course too far and it becomes totally unplayable. This week, early signs suggest they could be verging on a similar problem again this year.”

How the new U.S. Open venue, Chambers Bay, will play, and how USGA czar Mike Davis will set up the Tacoma track has been a major subplot to the the leadup to this 115th U.S. Open. Likewise, criticism of the choice of venue.

From the looks of things so far, both trends are set to continue.

Chambers Bay makes for very bad TV coverage. The pics of the course are just ugly and uninviting. Who would want to spend their time and money to play that gravel pit. The USGA failed with its selection and in seeing how this course would look to the TV audience.

These pre-madonna pro golfers get what they want out of a course week in and week out. What is one hard week of unpredictable golf? I like watching them struggle and three putt. It shows that they are human and if they can mentally cope with winning a Championship after a double-bogey. Golf is not just physical and technical skills. The mental game is just as important and this course will show who is going to mentally beat the course. We always get a narrow tree lined, thick rough, fast greens US Open. It’s time they try something new. I applaud that. If you don’t like Chambers Bay, wait next year for *yawn* Oakmont again.

While It’s great the USGA is exploring new courses, shouldn’t they have to earn it a bit more than this one. its only 10 years old, and by all accounts the US amateur here was a complete disaster in terms of golf course setup. shouldn’t they have had a few more tournaments, to experiment with setup and conditions to see if its really worthy of a US Open?

The fact that it seems they have already ruined the course for the week when on Monday its bone dry – what can they do with it now? dump water on in which they won’t want to do and which will just make it soft in places and hard in others, which could be even worse.

I thought they had started to learn that hard golf isn’t always good golf. Nor does it really find the best players. The last few opens have been quite good, reasonably interesting to watch and top players challenging for the Lead. Don’t go and ruin it. If I wanted to see guys hacking out of the rough and 3 and 4 putting, I could go watch golf at my own club.

Now i will get off the Soap Box

    Another comment:

“If you like the color green on golf courses, this might not be the place for you.” He continued saying “The greens have the worst-conditioned look I’ve ever seen in a professional golf event. But the greens roll fine. You have to get over the look of them, and believe it will roll true. Because for the most part, it will.”

Nice to see a course used on the west coast for a major and a departure from the standard tree lined courses normally used from the midwest and east coast. I love the links look of the course and wish there were more courses designed like Chambers Bay or Bandon Dunes. As a side note while brown grass isn’t as pretty as green I’d rather play a dry fast course any day. I live in Palm Springs and the drought California is experiencing is finally forcing courses to stop being overwatered.

From Ryan Moore after a round:

“Honestly, they’re not the prettiest greens in the world, but no fescue greens are that pretty,” Moore said. “It actually rolls better than it looks.”

This is a fescue, so it’s not typical to the bent grass that 99% of what other US courses use. So it will be interesting.

Pinehurst looked terrible last year too. Brown fairways everywhere, and I cancelled my trip there after I saw the US Open. That’s just one opinion.

      What is wrong with brown?

      • Old Tom Morris

        Jun 16, 2015 at 5:43 pm

I’d rather play browned out fairways and get more roll on drives than have the ball plug in the fairway due to overwatering. My country club in Palm Desert is beautifully manicured and it is frustrating to play. A 3 iron shouldn’t stop next to its deep ball mark on the green and drives shouldn’t plug in fairways and mud balls shouldn’t happen in the summer but that’s the price to play what some consider perfectly manicured.

Move to Southeastern Washington, there are a few dried out tracks. 3/4 of the year is baked out or frozen. Love being able to play in winter (if below 40* doesn’t bother you). Makes the game more interesting to me.

I grew up in Walla Walla so I’m well familiar with that area. My favorite course that I’ve played is the Wine Valley Golf Club. I really love links golf maybe because most courses are tree lined target golf.

I grew up in Kennewick, now in Spokane. Haven’t gotten out to Wine Valley, very proud about their prices, may go during the winter season. I always enjoyed Horn rapids when they let it get dry, last few times I was out there the fairways were soaked and soft. Must have been trying to make it easier to attract more players.

to each his own. some people (not many) like playing in wind and rain. my idea of a good golf outing is a place with conditions like augusta national in good weather.

I would not spend a nickel to play that dump with dead grass and weeds as a green. What a dump.

The “greens” look horrible. What a dump. Brown dead grass with weeds. Loserville course.

grass is healthy. There is some poa annua in the green, still rolls smooth. Nothing wrong with a dried out course. Unless you need nice fluffy lies to get it in the air.

I live about an hour away from Chambers. Hey, it’s just a brutal course! (…especially in sub 40 degree temps in a pouring rain with 15-20 mph winds)

Sure, they made it tougher for the pros, but they’re pros. All the guys will play the same course, so it shouldn’t matter in the end. Good luck boys!!! I’m really looking forward to seeing them play in person!

    Jun 16, 2015 at 7:14 am

I thought this guys are good. grow some balls, play it straight and close to the pin, leaving yourself plenty of 5-6 footers for birdie. Simple. If I can play those greens, PGA boys can too.

    Jun 16, 2015 at 12:08 am

The greens are fescue grass so that is a whole different animal from the manicured bent or Bermuda grass greens I like it it reminds me of some of the courses we little people have to play

  15. David

    Jun 15, 2015 at 11:05 pm

Tough is good, poorly manicured is flat stupid. To have players miss putts because the greens are uneven and do not roll straight is ridiculous. The USGA, when they picked this course it looked awesome from afar, but now close up pics with weeds on the green… this just isn’t cool. Hopefully it’s better than it looks.

    • John

      Jun 17, 2015 at 7:19 pm

All the players are saying they roll fine. They just look bad because they’re brown. But who cares what they look like?

I don’t get the ridiculous comments about wanting plus ten to win or how bumpy greens are what regular joes play so they need to deal with it…

The reason they play well manicured courses is because it eliminates some of the randomness and rewards good shots. Last thing I’d want to see is a guy stick it close and miss the putt because ball hit bump in green. It’s incredibly easy to pick out commenters wanting to see pros struggle not under difficult course but difficult contrived setup or bad course conditions and realize these commenters are completely clueless. Last thing I want to watch is major played on some shtty municipal course like so many pretend they want to see or a tricked out courses that eliminates skill and rewards lucky bounces all week.

We are use to seeing brown at the Open championship, now U.S. opens. I personally prefer modern, lush green cross hatch cut. I miss the cross hatch cutting where you could clearly distinguish the fairway from the rough. Just my opinion and I know plenty love the links look

The pic of that green is hole 1…..Poa running wild on it and piss them off right out of the gate. Worst green on the course for rolling the rock over.

Hmm I hope Davis doesn’t ruin this… I was looking forward to this course but if he just burns it out in the name of making it “challenging” does the best golfer really win or does it become a case of the golfer who gets the luckiest bounces…?

What GolfWRXers are saying about Kevin Kisner’s new Callaway X Forged CB irons

Published

on

In our forums, our members have been discussing Kevin Kisner’s new Callaway X Forged CB irons which he has in the bag at this week’s CJ Cup. WRXers have been commenting on the switch and the clubs themselves in our forums.

For lots more photos, check out the full thread here.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • btyh: “Holy offset.”
  • Glf_LU: “These are interesting. Not going to make a rush to judgement until I see them in person. It does look like a little more offset than I would expect to see in this model.”
  • bcflyguy1: “Kisner is not one to make a lot of equipment changes (see the GBB driver he’s still using), so if these do have staying power in his bag that will be interesting to see. I have to wonder if there’s something different about his set, because like others have mentioned there appears to be more offset on his than I recall seeing in the samples I’ve had in hand.”

WATCH: PGA Tour players play hole blindfolded and it’s hilarious/amazing

Published

on

As part of a Srixon campaign, four PGA Tour players recently participated in a three-hole challenge, with each hole being a different game; hole No. 1 was blindfolded, hole No. 2 was costumes and distractions, and hole No. 3 was alternate shot with a baseball bat. The teams were Smylie Kaufman and Sam Ryder against Shane Lowry and Grayson Murray.

Watch the full video below, since it is quite entertaining (albeit not the type of golf that Old Tom Morris surely had in mind), but in particular, make sure to check out the first hole where Lowry and Ryder play a full hole completely blind folded. It’s amazing to watch how badly Ryder struggles, and how Lowry nearly makes par.

Cleveland-Srixon’s marketing department has been hard at work crafting these viral-esque ad campaigns; if you remember, former long-drive champion Jamie Sadlowski recently dressed as 80-year-old Grandpa Jamie to fool range-goers. That video has since gathered over 1.2 million views on YouTube.
