Tiger says Jenkins went too far
Satire has its place, but being mean without provocation is just pointless. Dan Jenkins, veteran journalist for Golf Digest toed the line, then took another step into the realm of mean-spiritedness — or so Tiger Woods says.
Dan Jenkins and the Golf Digest team concocted a satirical interview between Jenkins and Tiger, covering topics like his notoriously bad tipping of waiters and waitresses, treating his friends poorly and using nicknames for everyone. It also attacked the perceived weak competition he played against during his prime, suggesting he had no competition. Digest even hired a Tiger Woods look-a-like to stage photos, such as Tiger taking a selfie at Perkins Restaurant & Bakery.

Tiger and his team went on the offensive with their defense, writing a letter to Golf Digest, and Woods’ self-written (well, maybe) blog post on Jeter’s site, before the original piece even ran publicly on media outlets.
What this really means is that Twitter will explode with talk about Tiger’s response, salivating at the chance to read the original piece, then call Tiger a bunch of names and suggest he be more thick-skinned.
But, really, Tiger hasn’t done anything recently to deserve the satirical display. Isn’t bashing him so 2009? He hasn’t won a major since 2008 and had one of the messiest divorces in recent memory. In April, he had back surgery and has played terrible since he returned. He missed this year’s Ryder Cup with another back injury and has been watching his buddy Rory McIlroy win majors like Tiger did in his prime — while listening to the media tell Rory that he’s better than Tiger ever was.
Geez, Jenkins, cut the guy some slack for now, eh? Let him win again before you bring up the tipping at restaurants thing, no? It makes Jenkins just look upset that Tiger denied him the interviews he really wanted, so he bashed him in a fake one.
I do believe satire and media outlets like The Onion can be funny at times — and those outlets are well within their right to publish such content — but seriously, there’s really no point in going below the belt and rehashing unoriginal old jokes.
It may be a simple case of Tiger’s dislike of the media and the media’s belief that it’s well within its right to embarrass public figures, but I think it’s even simpler than that. If Jenkins didn’t use the played out “Marko, Butchie, Steiny” joke and came up with something more original, I don’t think Tiger would have cared.
If you decide to throw unsolicited shots at Tiger, you better come correct!

He thinks he can ignore the press and pick and choose his cupcake interviews. Try getting a autograph from Eldrick , good luck. He will go down as one the greatest golfers ever and one of the rudest.

It’s all about money. The media is very mean and very unforgiving. No one is perfect, not Tiger woods and not Jenkins. If Tiger was still No:1 jenkins would not dare venture into this territory. He seems desperate to create news about Tiger as Tiger still sells and he needs sales. Tiger claims to be a golfer, not a saint, not a politician. If he is a cheapo so what, so are plenty of other billionaires. If he is a womanizer, so what, many men are. Be professional mr. Jenkins, don’t be a vulture, be an eagle. Write about golf, not what is tiger like with his friends. I don’t GAF what tiger does away from a golf course.

I’m not a fan of Tiger anymore or less than I’m a fan of Jack or Phil or Rory or any other pro. I’m simply a fan of the game of golf, you know, that once classy sport. Jenkins and Golf Digest have substantially lowered the bar by engaging in vengeful and hateful public behaviors behind a thinly veiled guise of supposed satirical humorous writing. This behavior requires an apology. An apology to the game of golf. We used to be better than this.

This wasn’t Onion-style satire, but childish, name-calling crap. It’s not that Tiger doesn’t have flaws, but this piece left me with a feeling that the author was just blatantly mean-spirited. If I were his boss, I’d give serious thought to simply canning him.

This is a man who publicly courted publicity and fabricated a wholesome image, has become very wealthy off the back of it, and even if it is a somewhat cheap shot in terms of timing (apropos of what? Why now?) has thrown his toys out of the pram because he is unable to confront how it has all gone so equally, publicly sour. Throw in your partner making a comment that suggests she’s not very bright and the response looks WAY to heavy handed. Whatever the timing or motive, if it isn’t quite l ‘the truth hurts’ the article does ‘hit close to home’. It must be galling for Woods because the machine he relies upon to protect his financial interests seems to have one default setting of ‘outrage’. He’d have been better off not giving a bogus, superficial ‘public apology’ back when it all unravelled, that he felt obliged to give, or was advised to give. If he’d been honest about who he is as a person and not what he thought or took advice on what his management team thought was needed to limit the fall-out, perhaps he would be in less turmoil mentally on the golf course. He had a very good 2013, and then the back injury, so has it in him. But there are people that, mistakenly, believe at any sign of a Woods injury story that it is a fake. My point is, deluded as they might be, it is indicative of the problem at the core of this when people’s first reaction is one of disbelief. Mr Woods might consider that his public image is broken, and relying on the same PR methods that create his fortune won’t work so well; his behaviour has shifted a sizeable number of people’s opinion about him irrevocably. He just looks, and by virtue of his PR releases, comes across as someone that is genuinely baffled as to why the tried and trusted techniques no longer work (on as well as off the course). He cuts a petulant, disconsolate figure.

Jenkins has wanted a real interview for years with tiger. Never could get one. Is it just me? tiger is just plain rude. Have you ever seen him signs autographs? I never liked the idea of one guy who was bigger than the game. It is going to take time but the tiger statue has to come down. Lets get back to the clubs doing the talking. Team tiger cannot censure that.

Dear Mr. Eldrick Tont “Tiger” Woods and all those who are “outraged” by this article.
Remember when golf was a game? remember when golf was something you did for FUN? If not, maybe it is time to go back and play a round for FUN! Maybe its time to walk up to a muni golf course, you remember them? Where you can get a cold hot dog, a small bag of chips and a warm beer for $7.00, Where the golf pro is also the starter AND the snack bar attendant, where half the range balls have the dimples worn off and the others are stray balls from the first fairway. Maybe it time to once again try to hit the ball before the sprinkler goes around and soaks you, maybe its time to once again get down on all four and putt using your putter like a cue stick. Remember when golf USED to be FUN?!?!? If not, stop playing golf until you do. Because it is a GOLF GAME.

Write a fake article(Jenkins), Tiger react to the article on Jeter’s website. Then collect the royalties through the page views because the controversy. What a bunch of scammers. #Mousetrapped

I am really disappointed in Golf Digest, I was already contemplating not renewing now I am sure I won’t. They have really taken a bad turn in golf journalism these last couple of years. I am not interested in reading any articles about some beautiful woman who they say is what golf is about. Palmer/Hudson, the Gretzky girl,the closest thing they got to that theme was Holly Sonders whom TGC locked out. When you think they have an article about equipment it isn’t much more than pictures and a paragraph. It isn’t important if Dan Jenkins has the right to write anything but it is just poor judgment. The first time I ever heard that Tiger might not be as generous a tipper as say Phil Mickelson was at this magazine. I mean really??? He was one of the first really big charities for golf long time ago. Now you have these guys coming up with this holier than thou crap. I think Jenkins has lost much of his writing prowess if this is all he can come up with to entertain us. Good bye Golf Digest and The Golf Channel. Start boycotting these guys.

I’d be impressed to just get the website to render correctly on a mobile device. Otherwise, stop inviting people to participate. Bad journalism aside, Tiger is 15 years older than Rory, is a fantastic ambassador to the game, and successfully raising 2 kids as a single parent (on top of the other observations). I’m thinking it sounds like a pretty bad choice for these other folks to be so cruel and insensitive to his situation to produce such a piece. It’s they that should be ashamed, not vice versa. This isn’t the act of a friend playing a good natured joke – or at least that’s not how it is being presented.
Honestly, getting tired of all of the public media drama being crafted. We don’t need that kind of attention.

What is Golf Digest and who is Tiger Woods? Seems like I remember them from long ago. I counted more advertisement pages in Golf Digest than actual published pages one month long ago when I actually read the magazine for the last time and if you don’t want to get satired, don’t do stupid stuff, then there is nothing to satire. Once you are in the public eye you will get criticized and praised. If you can’t take it then don’t read it or don’t get famous. I would think Tiger’s millions would allow him not to worry about that crap. In retrospect I’m surprise Dan Jenkins is still alive. Didn’t he satire Walter Hagen in the November 1927 issue.

I read this article while browsing through the magazine at the newsstand. I didn’t think it was all that funny. The stories about Tiger’s personal failings have been around for a long time so the piece was timely. I think Tiger’s people mishandled the response and have drawn a lot more attention to the piece than it would received otherwise.

The fabricated interview with TW made me sick because I realized I’m wasting my money.
Not because it is about TW, but because I subscribe to the magazine
as a tool to help me get better. I read the magazine cover to cover to ;earn how to get better.
That being said, let me ask you folks two simple questions:
Will reading the fake interview help you shoot lower scores?
Is playing better the reason why you purchased the magazine?
If you answered the same why I did, I can help but second guess my subscription.

Granted, you would think that with all his experience, Tiger Woods would appreciate this, and if not the 14-time major winner, then perhaps his media team, whose only job we had previously believed was to say “no”. You might also suspect that he and they would recognise the absurdity in claiming that some readers believed an interview marked “fake” on the cover of the magazine and “fake” in the headline was actually genuine.
I have a seven-year-old son who believes his grandfather plays golf with Father Christmas every Tuesday who spotted it as a spoof. Maybe it was the Woods look-a-like, who does not look that much like Woods, who the magazine employed to pose for pictures. Or maybe it was the headline in huge type across the spread which reads “My Interview With Tiger*” with the subheading of “*Or how it plays out in my mind”. Whatever, my clever little boy saw through it.
But Lindsey Vonn is worried. Woods’s girlfriend took time off her World Cup skiing training to tell USA Today why he decided to pen his, by now, already infamous riposte to the Golf Digest article. “It was like a fabricated interview, like what [the writer] thinks Tiger would say,” Vonn said. Yes, thanks for that Lindsey. That is what parodies are. They imitate with the intention to lampoon. The target is not supposed to find them amusing. Other people are.

I didn’t find it particularly funny. But Tiger should have just let it go. His response drew much more interest than the article. Hard to argue with certain facts though. Tiger is a crappy tipper and its been well documented numerous times. When Tiger responds he always blames it on “his people” or demurs by saying he doesn’t carry cash. If it really bothered him its a problem he could have easily remedied. He’s played in enough tournaments and been to enough restaurants. He’s even opening one. Finally its hard to feel sympathy for him when he and his people chose to hold a nationally televised press conference to discuss his sex addiction and his proposed treatment with his mother in the audience. And without getting into a long diatribe on slander or defamation, trust me it is neither, at least as far as an actionable claim.

I read the article by Jenkins and had a good laugh.
At this point, Eldrick’s bank account is about a zillion times larger than Dan’s, so he really doesn’t have much to complain about. If writers and magazines and the media weren’t paying attention, Tiger wouldn’t have Privacy etc.
But Tiger may be so dense that he bends light rays.
Wait, that was someone else….
I re-upped my subscription. Plus, I like the swing sequence videos on my iPad where I can trace my finger over the line real fast and watch the players swing about 1000 miles per hour.
Does that make me a fool? You be the judge.

The piece was pretty stupid in my opinion, and I think it is symbolic of the age in which we all live in whereby credentialed journalists (and publications) become bottom feeders for eyeballs. The truth is that the target audience loves the ludicrous and ridiculous (just like the advertisers want when they claim their new club goes further than their last record breaking long driver
Is that good, or is it bad…guess we will have to wait and see once all the old school types are gone.
I do believe though, if you think about the Jenkins piece, and Tiger’s response…you will see that the tactics used by both sides were not all that different.
In fact, I believe that Tiger and his management team are much smarter than anyone thinks. This story gave Tiger the opportunity to do a couple key things: 1) push traffic to Jeter’s new site, 2) get tiger’s name out there right before his tournament in a few weeks.
Think about it, everyone in the golf world is talking about this. Every show, every sports blog, every radio program.
It doesn’t matter who was wrong or right…the only thing that matters is how many people are talking about it.
This is just another form of plastering Kim Kardashian’s fat a$@ all over the Internet. It creates a buzz, people click, and a cash register rings on the other end.

There are some journalists who will write oretty much anythingso long as it creates a good story that the publicwill want to read. Doen’t have to be true, doesn’t have to be based on facts, but it does have to be attention arresting and make people want to read it.
Magazines and Newspapers exist from the revenues they generate from advertisers – so creating a huge audience is what it is all about. If you wnatto be seelingnthe sort of stuff to people who will only read quality newspapers,nthen what you rpint has to be pretty much the truth. If you want to sell to people who are gullible and easily convinced, who don’t really care if the stories are correct – then the advertisers will who want thosesrt of customers will come to you.
The bottom line is there arevalways readers for whatever stories you write and mirrors by avertisers who want to sell to those readers. Truth is a malleable commodity in the media. When golf decided to go for the big money from sponsors and advertisers they opened the door to all this sort of nonsense.

Two (maybe 3) simple points here are easy to see…
1. If you deny a journalist an interview, they will sometimes go to great lengths to show you the that you have made a mistake.
2. Jenkins can add a lack of a sense of humor to Tigers faults.
Possible 3rd- Tiger is officially no longer a significant enough personality on the PGA to be immune to this kind of journalistic license

Honestly, this article is not very funny or scandalous and not really all that hard on Tiger. I think the nastiest lines that Jenkins puts in Tigers mouth, are that he likes to fire people and he’s a bad tipper. And the fact that Jenkins ripped on Sergio and Chamblee for Tiger was pretty sweet (especially the “low cry baby on tour every week” line regarding Sergio – CLASSIC).
Tiger and his peeps missed a great chance here to score some much needed cool points – if he had played along with this article – and said something funny and satirical in response, he could have came away from this looking more human. Instead his retort just seems to prove all the character flaws that Jenkins and many others in the past, have pointed out are true.

A lot of interesting thoughts in these comments. I agree with some viewpoints on both sides of the argument. Either way, Dan Jenkins did his job by getting Golf Digest in the news (not just golf websites) and garnering major publicity. Be it sleazy or not, Golf Digest is enjoying the uptick in recognition and probable site traffic.

What people seem to forget is how long all journalists kissed Tiger’s ass hoping to get an interview, the interview that inevitably never came. The piece was humor. It lives and dies on whether it’s funny, not on whether it’s “good journalism.” Tiger’s people must have known the media would criticize him for thin skin and over-reacting. But they saw what seems to be happening: Most average golfers are taking Tiger’s side.

I have a lot of respect for his game, achievements and impact. I learned a long time ago not to judge a man by his words rather than by his actions. Tiger says a lot of the right things and has done a lot of wrong things.
Tiger has benefited greatly from publications, media, writers and broadcasters. He has also systematically tried to control the content revealed about him. Examples: Research his beef with John Feinstein, his attempt to get Chamblee fired, his tiff with Alex Miceli when Alex pressed him in news conference.
Bottom line is this, be real, be authentic, be humble and be honest and none of these things could have been written! They hurt because they are believable. Perception is reality!!!!!

Just another has been writer who was denied an interview many years ago and thought tiger should have been honored to be interviewed by him. Years later, he’s still upset and can’t let it go. It reminiscent of the scorned boyfriend/girlfriend who can’t let it go and won’t go away.
It would be different if the article was at least funny. It was clearly just old tired jokes that at this point, could only be interpreted as doing nothing but being venomous. It’s clear he has an axe to grind against Tiger and he should say it. Instead, he hides behind “it’s Satire.”.

Dan Jenkins is in the World Golf Hall of Fame for Lifetime Achievement. I believe he has covered more Masters than any other writer. He’s written a number of sports/golf books such as Dead Solid Perfect and Semi-Tough. He’s always been a tongue-in-cheek writer and a bit sarcastic. He’s definitely “old school” and I would expect that the answer to the very 1st question (there’s nothing to gain) which is what he was told in the past is the very reason he wrote the article. It is obvious that DJ has little respect for TW the man and has dwindling respect for TW the golfer. He harkens back to a time when it was Hogan, Nelson, Palmer and Nicklaus he interviewed and they cooperated. I find the “interview” not particularly funny nor particularly harsh. It is much ado about nothing in both quarters.

Like others, I read the article with mixed feelings. While I recognize satire, I didn’t think Jenkins was funny or original. This seemed like an article that did not require much imagination or creativity. I would further suggest that Golf Digest should stick to reporting on golf — equipment, tournament previews, travel, playing lessons, etc. Leave the tabloid fodder to the tabloids. If I didn’t get it for free, I would never buy the magazine. The content provided by GolfWRX and the myriad of other sites, more than quenches my thirst for golf-related content.

Maybe it’s just me but I couldn’t finish Jenkins satire because it wasn’t funny and I didn’t find anything really offensive. Jenkins article was stupid at best and when I see stupid articles like Jenkins or ones from golfwrx writers about how Tiger dresses I just assume not much is happening in the golf world. In my opinion it was a tough task for Jenkins to make a comical interview out of someone who just isn’t funny or interesting outside of his golf game. I’m the first one to read every article concerning swing changes or hoping that Tiger will give a real pre or post round interview concerning golf or the state of his game and changes he is making to it in the slight possibility I might learn something from the greatest golfer of my generation.

I don’t think it went too far at all. Legally, it is more clear it is satire if one “goes overboard … saying outrageous things that couldn’t be true.” In this case, all of the stuff could have been said by Tiger — so it is less clear that this is satire.

I’m a Tiger fan, and I think Tiger has every right to be pissed at Jenkins and GD about that piece. It was unadulterated character assassination. It’s not libelous, but it certainly was appallingly personal and mean-spirited. Jenkins has had a hair across his as* about Tiger for a long time. Maybe because Tiger never gave him that one-on-one interview that Nicklaus and Hogan gave him that helped build his stature among the press corps. Maybe Tiger never gave him that interview because he sensed Jenkins had that hair across his behind to begin with, that Tiger (with the media) dared to eclipse the greatness of Jack and Ben. Who knows? But Jenkins made no effort to hide his contempt for Tiger, his bitterness. And as a result, the article was only “funny” if you hate Tiger, too, and you relish watching the beating. Who wouldn’t be angry to be so treated?

I agree. I read the article, as much as I could get through, and wondered one thing: why is this article in Golf Digest? I don’t care one way or the other about Tiger, but this article was simply dumb, base, and is something you would think would be in a lesser magazine. But, having been a subscriber for about 15 years, I have to say that GD really has become a lesser magazine. I’ve seen it happen to Golfweek, subscribed for 10-12 years, as well but not to this extent of course. They’ve become lowest common denominator products. But I guess they’ve had to because there just aren’t enough people seeking serious golf information to keep this stuff out of what used to be almost industry mags. Now they’re grasping at anything that will catch eyes, golf eyes or any other, and thus driving away serious golfers. GD is trying to compete against Maxim, and they’re not gonna win that one.

Tiger and his people completely overreacted and actually did Jenkins and GD a favor. He should’ve said nothing and when he was eventually asked about it he could’ve given a snarky, dismissive answer that would have had a more desired effect than lashing out.

TW needs a new “team” of advisors. Whether you liked the article or not is beside the point at this juncture. Tiger’s response to this is just…so ill advised. It’s just going to drive people who otherwise wouldn’t have even thought about this article, in the off season no less, when no one is paying much attention, to read the thing. Whether they think Tiger is being jobbed or not, they will still come away with the impression that he’s a jerk. Just ignore it, and if asked for comment say something honest, but not controversial like, “I didn’t find it funny, but Mr. Jenkins is entitled to write what he wants”. It then quickly goes away. This is PR 101. Who are these people? They are “yes” men of course, which is exactly what Woods doesn’t need, since his own judgement in these matters is dreadful. TW hasn’t had a mature, intelligent, stand up associate since Butch. The Harmon’s are all class acts. Tiger isn’t. He needs much better advice.

The irony is that Tiger Woods and his PR team chose to aggressively respond to Jenkins’s clearly labeled satirical piece while ignoring the article in which Johnny Manziel recounted being stiffed for an autograph by Woods when Manziel was 10 years old. Manziel’s story tells you all you need to know about Woods even though Jenkins’s satirical interview is also based largely on true facts.

Actually it was slander. The entire article was a lie because it never took place and he “fabricated” responses from Tiger. Parodies only work if you have some level of respect for the individual and the reader should be able to feel that the overall tone is comical and in good spirits. But it’s clear from EVERY Q&A in the article that it was meant to be mean spirited and low blows towards Tiger. Personally I don’t even care for Tiger, but this was a low class move by Jenkins. GD magazine was crap to begin with and this just proves that further. Definitely will not be renewing my subscription.

In general, Golf related entertainment (except for a few must see tournaments) really sucks. Golf magazines are basically turning into brochures. TGC is going down hill. Did anyone see the last morning show with Alonzo Morning? So bad especially with Gary Williams’ annoying high pitched voice. Also, has anyone seen the golf movie on TGC lately with Robert Duval? That was one of the worst movies I’ve seen in a while. Anyway, I wish ESPN can start a golf specific show or channel.

I read the article in Golf Digest, perhaps a bit interesting, but then I am not a fan of Jenkins and then went on to the next article before I finished it. No big deal, satire and a fake interview, what else is new with Jenkins. Now it explodes due to Tiger’s team being upset by it. I do not understand the strategy, the best way to give publicity to an article that would and had otherwise gone unnoticed by most is to ignore it. I think Tiger’s camp made a big mistake in that now everyone wants to read the article that most, like me, would have ignored five minutes after reading it.

I agree with this. Actually, I have heard from a head locker room attendant at a WGC event that Tiger is the worst tipper on tour. But who cares anyway?

First off, these satirical interviews are nothing new. Second, the content was on-point. That’s what made it pretty funny. At Tiger’s expense, of course. Very few writers have had the balls to point out who the REAL Tiger Woods. Strangely, from most public opinion I see, TV golf fans don’t want to know about it.

I honestly don’t care to know about his personal life. I’m a fan of how he hits the golf ball (and other tour pros). He is human like me and has made mistakes like me. Big deal. That is not news IMO and should not be reported (and least not in 2014). Scandal is long gone. Jenkins should be reporting on a real golf topic like why idiots don’t fix their ball marks and someone else’s instead of attacking TW for no apparent reason. Articles like his are useless.

Jenkins should have been retired 10 years ago. His articles are lame at best and I am not a Tiger fan.. Who would hire him if he left Golf Digest? Nobody

Jenkins is a bit#& for writing the article and not only is he disrespecting Tiger and also disrespected several other golfers in his article. It wasn’t funny and frankly he should be fired. I’m not a huge Tiger fan I’m a golf fan and this IMHO crosses the line. Would Jenkins says these same things in Tiger’s face, very doubtful. If I were TW I would confront him face to face. Maybe slap the sh#$ out of him and write a settlement check!!! Media nonsense must end.

I didn’t find the article very entertaining and I’ve been a Jenkins fan forever. Tiger should have left well enough alone, it was just a piece of satire written in the off season to help sell magazines. Perhaps if Tiger would ever do any press that was not pre-scripted and canned, his relations with the media would be different.

Golf Digest and Golf Magazine are desperate. Cant remember the last time I bought one. Holly Sonders, Gretzky and thank god for instagram female golfers photos for last stand content to throw up content that might draw readers back. They need controversy to stay relevant today. Without it they will have to lay off another wave sooner than they want. Called preservation. Sad to have this in the game of Golf though. Golf is a class act and this isnt. I would be pissed to if I was Tiger. I am surprised they can legally use photos like that… looks like him near the car.

You realize that there was a lot more to the golf digest article than just that incident right? He criticized Tiger for winning majors when there was no competition. Explain to me how he could have avoided that barb? That he had some friends like Mark O’Meara he doesnt hang with. Sorry, I don’t know anyone who doesnt have old friends that they aren’t close with anymore. It was a little bit more than making fun of him for having an affair.
