Can McDowell go wire-to-wire at the WGC-HSBC Champions?

Published

on

Pre-Final Round Update: Graeme McDowell has led each of the first three rounds at the WGC-HSBC Champions and is looking to complete a wire-to-wire victory in Shanghai. He’s 11-under entering the final round at Sheshan International Golf Club, but other big names are lurking.

Hiroshi Iwata is the one name golf fans might not know. The 33-year-old, who has played the Japan Tour since 2004, is one shot back of McDowell at 10-under.

Just behind Iwata is a slew of major threats. U.S. Open champion Martin Kaymer and Master winner Bubba Watson are both 9-under, while Rickie Fowler, who finished in the the top-5 in each of the 2014 majors, is 8-under.

McDowell, who is No. 17 in the Official World Golf Rankings, last won in July at the French Open. He has 10 wins to his credit on the European Tour, including the 2010 U.S. Open, but he has yet to win a World Golf Championship (WGC) event.

McDowell tees off at 11:30 p.m. EST (10:30 a.m. local time) with Kaymer and Iwata.

Sheshan International plays as a par-72 measuring 7,266 yards for the event. The course, designed by Nelson & Haworth, has hosted the event nine times, so many of the players will be familiar with the layout that features rock quarries, waterways and 1,000-year old Gingko trees.

Great looking tournament and great field too. I understand to grow the sport in other parts of the world but after watching the tournament this morning it’s apparent there are very few spectators. You can even hear the players talking to each other like it’s a Saturday afternoon round with friends. The money must be good because all the really good players are there but it still seems odd without any spectators.

Over the years, it’s been held at a variety of courses across the Lone Star State, but it’s found its home at TPC San Antonio in recent years. Some of the biggest names in golf have taken home the title here, including Arnold Palmer, Ben Hogan, Lee Trevino, and Ben Crenshaw.

GolfWRX has its usual assortment of general galleries, WITBs and special pull-out albums. As always, we’ll continue to update the links below as more photos come in from TPC San Antonio.
