Jimmy Walker wins close Sony Open

Published

Jimmy Walker added to his already impressive 2013-14 PGA Tour campaign by winning the Sony Open in Hawaii on Sunday. Walker fired a final-round 63 to edge the nearest competitor Chris Kirk by one stroke.

Kirk had a chance to force a playoff on the 72nd hole with a chip from the front of the green on the reachable par-5 No. 18, but his title hopes ended as his chip raced by the hole, making Walker the winner.

On a Sunday that saw a jam-packed leaderboard, it was Walker who stood the tallest. The top-five finishers consisted of Walker, Kirk, Jerry Kelly, Harris English and Marc Leishman; each had a good chance to win the title Sunday as they all held a share of or an outright lead at one stage of the final round.

Walker was on fire on the backside at Waialae, making birdie on four of the last six holes, which included an impressive string of three birdies in a row from Nos. 15 through 17 coming down the stretch. Walker’s 63 was the best round carded on Sunday beating out fellow contenders Jerry Kelly’s and Marc Leishman’s rounds of 65. One of the keys for Walker was keeping his scorecard blemish-free, with no bogies in the final round.

Walker kicked off the newly formatted PGA Tour schedule with a win at the Frys.com Open back in October and is the first two-time winner in the early stages of this season. It took Walker a while to break through on Tour, going 187 starts before his first win at the Frys.com, but he seems to be getting into a groove winning twice in his past six starts.

“It took me a long time to [win],” Walker said. “I felt very calm and controlled. That’s what you’ve got to feel and do when it’s time to win. It’s easy to say, hard to do. But [Sunday] was awesome. Really cool golf.”

The win will put Walker in the No. 1 spot on the U.S. Ryder Cup team standings, and he is close to cracking the top 30 in the World Golf Rankings. Along with that, he also collects a $1.08 million check. That brings his 2013-14 winnings up to $2,417,833 through his six events.
