Brian Gay Wins Verizon Heritage
Dull headline for what was one of the dullest, least dramatic final rounds since, oh 2006 Bell South Classic. Brian Gay started the day with a three shot lead, went birdie, eagle and spent the day hiding in a cloud of dust at the head of the field. His ten shot victory was the largest margin since Phil Mickelson won the above mentioned event by thirteen strokes.
Mr. Gay put together rounds of 67-66-67-64 for a record setting twenty under par score. Proof that on any given week anyone plying their trade on the PGA tour can capture magic and dust the entire field. That’s how good these guys are.
While Mr. Gay was hitting fairways and greens (well it is Harbour Town with those tiny greens so he was staying close to greens), rolling in a 60 foot putt on the second hole for eagle, making only two birdies on the week, I was left to the mercies of the announcers. Give Nick Faldo credit for honesty when he said at the top of the broadcast " We’ll be selling second place as hard as we can" with Mr. Gay leading by seven shots.
Gary McCord wondered aloud on the 16th hole if the winner could putter it around the final two holes and still win? David Feherty wasn’t the only one who didn’t know what to call a nine over par for a hole. As I said, very little excitement.
With his remarkable week Mr. Gay earned his first trip to the Masters, his first victory was an opposite field event so didn’t qualify him. He’ll also get to take his two adorable children to Hawaii in January to begin the 2010 season, something I’m sure the whole family will enjoy. Of course their is the $1.026 million winnings to count, repeatedly. Topping the list are all those FedEx Cup points he just earned.
I guess after all the fireworks of the previous week everyone needed some downtime. Congratulations to Brian Gay for his victory and stellar stellar play.
