Walker Cup: U.S. takes 8-4 lead into Sunday
The two mid-amateurs on the U.S Walker Cup team ceded their spots to a pair of youngsters, and boy did they come up big.
Max Homa and Michael Kim, held out of the morning foursomes by Captain James Holtgrieve, sparked the host side to a big afternoon by winning their individual matches. Homa defeated Max Orrin by a tally of 5 & 3 while Kim defeated Callum Shinkwin 2 & 1.
Not wanting to be left out of the party, their University of California teammate, Michael Weaver, managed a thunderous 3 & 1 win over recently-crowned U.S. Amateur champion Matthew Fitzpatrick. At the close of play, the American golfers had won 6.5 of 8 available points in the day’s second session, leaving them ahead by a count of 8 to 4.
After the afternoon matches, Great Britain and Ireland captain Nigel Edwards graciously answered a number of pointed questions from the press corp and targeted putting as the key to his team’s morning success and its afternoon struggles.
There’s a big sway here and there when you don’t hole the putt to keep your momentum going or to stay in touch and that’s probably the difference…if you’re going to win the Walker Cup, then you need to putt well, and that’s what we need to do tomorrow, which is fine because most of these lads putted well all year and one afternoon isn’t going to make them bad putters.
U.S. Captain James Holtgrieve encouraged his players to be true to themselves.
I told them to believe in themselves. I told them to enjoy the moment. I gave them a big hug on the first tee. So I just told them to go out and have fun.
The words proved appropriate as the eight collegians turned in an inspired performance. At one point, the red-white-and-blue team flew on seven of eight matches.
In the Sunday morning foursomes, Alabama teammates Bobby Wyatt and Cory Whitsett will lead off against Nathan Kimsey and Max Orrin. Match Two will feature Matthew Fitzpatrick and Neil Raymond of the visiting side versus Michael Weaver and Todd White.
The penultimate match will pit Garrick Porteous and Rhys Pugh of GB&I and Max Homa and Michael Kim of the U.S. The final competition sees Patrick Rodgers and Jordan Niebrugge face off with Gavin Moynihan and Kevin Phelan.
In afternoon singles, all 10 members of each side participate. Featured matches will see Neil Raymond and Bobby Wyatt reprise their Saturday duel, as will Matthew Fitzpatrick and Michael Weaver. Patrick Rodgers and Gavin Moynihan will again play the final, potentially-decisive match.
Team U.S. is concerned about the state of stalwart Justin Thomas’ back, explaining his conspicuous absence from morning play. Thomas will receive treatment and a decision will be made as to his status tomorrow. If he is unable to compete in afternoon singles, the U.S. may have to forfeit the match.
