Tiger and others give back in Boston

Published

on

Charitable donations and community events are nothing new for the PGA Tour and its players, but this week is noteworthy due to the tragic events of the Boston Marathon, which hits close to home at TPC Boston and the Deutsche Bank Championship.

The biggest talks on Tour of late are: Is Tiger “back” and is Tiger’s “back” healthy?  Those are both questions that will be resolved with his play, but he certainly has never had a problem handling the most important issue: giving “back” to the less fortunate.

Tiger Woods has had an immeasurable impact on children with the development of his Tiger Woods Foundation. In the photo above, Tiger poses at TPC Boston with Vladimir Casseus and Jamal Adam, recipients of college scholarships provided by the Red Sox Foundation, who partnered with Tiger’s foundation to provide career opportunities to local Boston scholars.

Tiger wasn’t the only one showing his willingness to give back to the community this week.

Scott Stallings and Martin Laird teamed up with the PGA Tour Wives of America, participating in the annual Bring Back Healthy Packs for unprivileged youth and those in need in the Boston area. Robert Garrigus was spotted, as part of the community outreach, giving golf tips to a former University of New Hampshire football player, Muji Karim, who survived a “fiery” car crash.

Survivors of the Boston Marathon bombing received custom club fittings during the Deutsche Bank Championship Tees Off Appreciation Day. Also getting involved were members of the Armed Services, who hit the ceremonial opening drive for the event.

The Deutsche Bank Championship, no stranger to charity, has raised over $24 million since the tournament’s inception ten years ago, generating $2.4 million just last year.

Talking heads of the media (myself included) are quick to criticize golfers, pass judgments and crunch numbers and statistics to analyze the game’s top professionals. What often gets overlooked, however, is the impact the players and organizations have off the course through charitable donations.

While enjoying the competition this week, try to remember the tragedies that occurred in the Boston area, and keep in mind that the professionals we see on TV have a positive impact in the community whether they’re making birdies or bogeys.
